While writing my post wondering about the impact of difficulty settings, another idea occured to me.

What if we could set the difficulty of individual opponents rather than for the entire game? Age of Wonders let you do this, so you could for example say I want to fight 3 opponents, one of whom will be hard, one who will be medium, and one who will be easy.

This is a good way to set up games where you can ramp up difficulty step-by-step instead of all at once. I think it would be a nice addition to Warlock, too.
