    Invasion of Formosa

Currently in my Nat. China (Sept. Of '40) game I control Com. China, Xibei San Ma, Sinkiang, Yunnan, Guangxi Cliqyue and Tibet. Shaanxi is neutral, embargoed by Japan and a buffer. Japan has not invaded me and is a member of the Axis and has been at war with the normal Allies of this time historically plus the US who joined in 1937. My techs are progressing nicely, about 40% of the way towards actually possessing nuclear weapons thatare ready to use. I have invaded Manchuria twice to no avail, fought successful naval battles against Japan off my southern coast before they called their whole navy to the region and destroyed my fleet, attempted an Invasion of Formosa but my fleet was destroyed but my Air Force has been able to protect my air space while bombing the bejesus out of Formosa, Southeastern Manchukuo, Western Korea, the Ryukyus and their fleets along my coast despite the fact that is 7 wings, 6 fighters and a bomber. The bombings haven't made a huge impact but have been enough of a pain for the Imperial Japanese to deal with. This has gone on for 2 years the last year I have just been sitting here and them the same the Allies haven't even engaged the Japanese and vice-versa. I was wondering if Japan does attack neutral Shaanxi how far down the way is that and should? Right now my plan is to invade Taiwan and Japan's small islands before blockading and invading either Manchukuo or Korea or Japan itself, should I do this or focus on a land army that can push through Shaanxi, annex it and force through the Japanese in Manchukuo and Korea? If the first what would I need in terms of an Air Force, Navy and Army and technology to augment their powers? Once that is accomplished how many troops should I invade with and how many do I leave behind to guard the mainland? Also will I need troops to guard in the west against the Soviets or British and should I invade other Japanese held territories simultaneously as Formosa? Sorry for all the questions I just want to build up and not prematurely invade causing a waste of time and effort while the Allies beat them as I want to secure Japan for myself and purposes.

Oh and manpower is 2250 and growing rapidly, I currently have 2 armies of 4 corps of 4 divisions of 4 brigades, one army has 4 brigades of infantry the other has 3 with artillery and other support brigades with it for a total of 4. My third army has the same OOB but with three brigades of mountain per division I also have a reserve corps of 4 divisions of 4 brigades of militia (should I disband them?).

Just build a shitload of transports, invade (use 'passive') and hope. Usually they aren't detected if unescorted, but bring a lot of spare transports and distract the navy.

Use your planes to scout the sea zones around where you will be landing. Use Air Superiority to automate the planes covering more than one sea area. That's a fast and safe way to see if Japan is sending ships to intercept your transports.

I agree, transports have a some kind of invisibility cloak. Just build huge number of transports. Make a big fleet of transports then load only a half of capacity so if Japanese sink a half of your fleet none of your troops are sunk together.

Could this be because sea transports have no combat stats (not even defensive), so the AI never "sees" them as a threat?

If you have air superiority over that island why not use air invasion? Capture a port then transport the rest of army, which is less likely to be intercepted. Other options are to manually land your troops next to port without using the invasion option. They have limited supplies but odds are better than a sea invasion... or combine the two.
