I decided to actually take a crack at a Russian game once. PDM, but I dont think there are many things in that mod that would make Russia terribly different from Vanilla so im putting it out as such unless otherwise pointed out.

First things first: Switch to Slavophile to start building Factories. Check. Read a strategy on making Russia a doom-force and this was the first point in it. So if this stategy is outdated let me know.

step 2: Ally with Prussia. Why cause I want Germany to form in my game, a powerful Germany= a Powerful Russia too.

step 3: get military access to India. Shortly thereafter declare war on Britain and win within 3 years. India has pretty much revolted against British rule now and its only been 5 years since I unleashed.

step 4: Go to war with the OE over Moldavia and Wallachia so they can get all happy and form Romania. Because I want Buffer Romania and Yugoslavia between the OE and Austria.

Step 5: this was done between steps 2 and 5 multiple times. Switch between Westernizer and Slavophile until Militancy is high enough to enact the peasant reforms.

Soooo now im at my current point. I have my Russia as the (still) #2 power in the world (hoping to stay top 3). What should I do? How should I strart getting Real refoms underway? How soon should I deal with the 600 lb Gorilla that is Austria? and when do I stop putting fingers in the leaks that is my Economy to see if it will float on its own? ( I have subsidized every factory. Any that close are summarily reopened because its cheaper to expand then to build a whole new one)

now for personal notes: I plan on staying on Americas good side So Alaska will be sold when the time comes, and i will ally with it after the ACW. (to hopefully goad the north to retake the south if it didn't win) and to Have a friend in the West, other then Germany of course but that Monster will speak for itself. England, Austria and any GP that pops up and decides (minus America) to mess around will be Punished...Severely. My personal hope is to have a Prussian Constitutionalism by end game and to have a strong enough base to hold off the Socialist revolts that will more then likely be unleashed on me.

So now comes the time when you tell me what needs to be done. What ive done wrong how I can fix it, or im on the right track. Cause right now im rolling blind......

If you think long-term and how you want to land in 1930, your main opponent is the lack of literacy of your country. So rather than building a massive pointless industry early on, you should focus on maximizing the Clergy % in all the major states and only build what your capitalists want you to invest into. You should spend 100% on edu, and keep researching better education techs until you catch up with the civilized world.

I agree, no need for early industrialisation. It might give some points, but you will do fine with your RGOs in the early and mid game.

When I play Russia, I usually start like this:
(1) Initial research order: Ideological Thought, Idealism, all education techs to Biologism, medicine. Get rid of avantgarde intelligencia once you are done with your most important culture techs.
(2) NF: Promote capis for a month or two, then promote bureaucrats until admin efficiency hits 100%, then promote clergymen up to 4%.
(3) Politics: Leave the conservative party in power, switch to westernizer once your initial industrial build is up. Pass as many reforms as you can, focus on trade unions for political and health care for social.
(4) Diplomacy: I stay out of the european wars. In fact, in most Russia games I do not start a single offensive war. Russia has enough land and pops to become #1 without military expansion.
(5) Military: Russia can mobilize tons of units when at war, so there is no need to invest in an early military buildup. I prefer to use CAV during the early game as a quick combat and partisan unit.

In general, Russia is a very powerful nation. Vast size, huge pop capacity, decent RGO goods. You can even colonize Africa. The only thing you need to stay competitive is to boost your literacy.

And don't sell Alaska... Russians only ever sold it because they were bankrupt from the Crimean Wars.

One of these days maybe we should think to edit that event to only give Americans that purchase opportunity if Russia is about to go under and needs the cash.

Alright i can boost literacy. the rest will come for itself afterwards. Should I get rid of Russias Imperial research Academy now?

question, why wouldnt you take land? you're massive why shouldnt you take more land. It dosnt hurt early in the game.

I have a Russia game going on right now. I focused on literacy from 1838 to 1901ish. I have a 99% Literacy Rate, #1 GP, a massive army, and a good Economy. Once literacy gets high enough, and you encourage Capis in the right places, your economy will expand.

Honest answer? Too lazy. Too much clicking for too little effect. ;)
Plus: I don't like other GPs as enemies. AI can be quite annoying when relations are low.

I would say yes. Try to replace it with another tech school. I still wonder if it is a typo by Pdox (-5% instead of -15% for culture?), but avantgarde intelligientsia is the worst tech school.

Alright slowly getting my Literacy up to 20%. Now i am running into my first problem. The reactionary's rule the UH. it is a 60/30/10/ split in the UH with Reactionary's and conservatives up there. is this normal or should i be worried?

also on the good news front I have a total of 1200 Capitalists in Russia! They just came in on their own and have stated building things. My current percentages are .9 % Bureaucrat's, 1.6 % clergymen, .9 % Clerks, and .001 % Capitalists. What should I be doing next?

Push your clergymen up to 3-4%. Literacy gain from clergymen caps at 4%, and you will want more literacy asap. Also make sure that 0.9% bureaus are enough for 100% tax efficiency.
After you have promoted enough clergymen it is really up to your choise... For smaller nations, I tend to promote capitalists during the rest of the game - they really improve factory efficiency for the states they are in (1% capis reduce good input requirement by -2.5% or something) and make tons of money, so I can milk them and set poor taxes to 0 until I start dreadspamming.

Another option could be to promote clerks. That should convert some of your clergymen (once your literacy is high enough, you should want to go down to 2% again) and improves RP generation.

As for the UH: Do you have the reactionaries in power? That would explain it. Otherwise, their influence should diminish once your economy kicks in, pops become literate and you pass your first voting rights reform.

No. I switched to Westernizer (liberal) when I got my first capitalists to stop the 10% loss of conservatives in the UH to the reactionarys. It only slowed the bleeding to 2 to 4% per year. before that I was conservative house.

Interesting. How are your aristos doing?
I checked the files and there are a few issues that can turn them reactionary: high MIL and CON, high poor strata MIL, support for slavery laws.

Maybe you can upload the save so I can have a look at it?

I pretty much have had constant 3.0 + Militancy in my game. that may explain things. I really dont know how to get it to go under said amount either.

as for the save file thing. idk how to do that. pm me with the instructions, so i can figure things out :)

PDM, but I dont think there are many things in that mod that would make Russia terribly different from Vanilla so im putting it out as such unless otherwise pointed out.

lol, there's a fair few thing... like the economy, technology, politics, military, diplomacy and most of the other aspects of the game... suspect this should be in the PDM subforum, tbh.

In PDM, aristos in backwards nations like Russia tend to get quite reactionary, leading to UH lock-ups. They're liable to get worse as you try to reform round them, too... you'll find that the tide starts to turn a lot more liberal once you hit 40% lit, but before that you'll struggle somewhat to keep them from reactionar-ness. It can be worth going the historical route of being reactionary just to keep them from getting militant.

Well I hit 20% lit and the reactionary tide is starting to wane. My UH is now 40% Reactionary/ 20% liberal/ 20% Conservative/ and 20% Anarcho-liberals! :O

I also have a half a a million person movement for voting rights. But its not enough to get the Conservatrives, libs or anarco-libs to budge yet.
