Dear James
I hope this letter finds you well. The massive assault across the Iron Curtain has caused our entire unit to press back, so I have barely had time to just sit down and write. Can you believe it? 10 years since the last war, already we begin again. Rumors are running around all over the place; is it true D.C. has been hit with a nuclear bomb? We don't know what to believe. Scattered reports are giving us little information, from what we've heard they came out of nowhere, and most divisions were annihilated in the initial blitz from the Soviet Zone. We weren't prepared for this. The Russians are one thing, but the damn Flaciota Flu already had the Western part of the continent in chaos. Hell of a time for war. We're heading back out in the morning, hoping to meet up with the 8th Armored. Probably shouldn't tell you that, might sell it to the Russians. Anyway, be sure to reply soon. I love you, and I miss you.

Dear Addison
I worry for you day and night. The newsreels are shocking! Nuclear weapons have destroyed both D.C., as well as Leningrad. It appears as though no further nuclear attacks were carried out, probably out of fear of total nuclear war. Major cities all across North America have increased the frequency of nuclear drills by nearly 10 fold. On top of that, the Prime Minister has reportedly gotten Flaciota Flu and is unable to do any of his duties. The world is in chaos, and we don't even have an effective leader! Speaking of Flaciota, it seems as though Abigail has also been infected. They've quarantined her to a hospital room, but her chances of survival are slim at best, on top of that, she doesn't even know if her husband made it out of West Berlin or not. I must stop writing now, but I want you to know that I love you, and I miss you. Come home alive.

1-1: Two Sides of a Conflict

General Lauris Norstad walked into the large room and sat behind the rectangular desk at the center. He looked the man on the opposite side of the desk squarely in the eyes. Both men were clearly restless, as well as very tense. General Norstad was the first to speak, breaking the silence. "The President, VP, and half of congress were in D.C." The man on the otherside of the table takes a puff from his pipe. General Norstad continues speaking "The Supreme Court held an emergency session, as of 0800 hours this morning, the military has total control of all American government functions." Norstad paused and turned towards the window. "I believe you are well aware of why I've called you here. The time for peace is over, and we need you to win us one last conflict." Norstad turned and looked at the man. "General, we need the best, we need you to take over as Supreme Commander of NATO. We are on the verge of losing West Germany. Will you accept?" Norstad eyed his opponent. The man finally spoke, "Time to send those commies back to the hole they crawled out of." Norstad cracked a minor smile, before speaking. "Welcome back to the Army, Commander-general MacArthur."

Dear Svetlana
We've got them outnumbered, and outgunned. It's just been days of marching west, liberating city after city from their American oppressors. You should see the joy in the faces of the German citizens! They know they are now free to reap the joys of socialism, and it shows. This people have been living under imperialist American rule for nearly 13 years now and now they are finally free! Dearest Svetlana, this is truly a wonderful thing. The rate at which we are taking cities, I'm near certain I will be home in time for the birth of our little Boris or Natasha. Please be sure to write soon, as I show the capitalist oppressors the might of the Soviet Union!

1-2: Nights in Munich

The 1st Infantry was heavily dug in throughout Munich, but the red zone was rapidly approaching. Troops were attempting to evacuate the German citizens, but it was difficult as there was a sense of panic throughout the city. Bombing raids by the Soviet Airforce were extremely frequent; NATO scrambled what fighters it could but it was pointless as the Soviets had air dominance. The city awaited the inevitable assault. Finally, at 10:47 pm, the Red Army blasted through the city's small outer defence and began the assault.

Dear James
The battle here in Munich started out fiercely, with the heaviest fighting I've ever witnessed. Polish Paratroopers quickly swooped in and caused chaos among our lines. We've lost so many, so many good people. For the last 2 days straight we've fought without sleep. Our guns are already running dangerously low on ammunition and our air support is none existent. I've faced war before, but this is no war, this is an absolute slaughter. Chris, Dan, Tommy, and even Beth are all MIA, I pray for the best but am expecting the worst. I have no idea why the retreat order hasn't been given, but as far as I can tell, we're losing. If this is any sign as to whats to come, the world will soon be a very dark place. I apologize for the once again short letter, but there is just no time. Be well James.

Dear Svetlana
Munich is such a beautiful city. We arrived here early this morning, and as far as I can tell, the NATO defenders are basically hopeless. We overpower them with 500 dead NATO soldiers for every dead Socialist! (Or so Dimitri has told me) The moral of our troops has never been higher; this Second Great Patriotic War or "World War III" as the West is calling it, is rapidly turning out to be a great success. I have no idea why they even try to continue to resist us, they are merely postponing the inevitable. America will soon become a lonely island in the middle of the USSR's world. Munich will soon no doubt fall to socialism, it surely is a great day to be a German it seems, time to break out the vodka! But I must not forget that as well as we are doing, we still have casualties. Those who died for this cause will never be forgotten. We are preparing to advance so I must say farewell my dearest Svetlana, I'll see you soon.

1-3: The Red Zone Expanding

"Austria has collapsed. The government didn't manage to escape." Commander MacArthur paused as he looked over a map of occupied Germany. "The pressure is really on in Germany, Munich is as good as gone." MacArthur looked up, not a single person in the room met his eyes. "General Palmer, Italy." Palmer begrudgingly walked towards the map and pointed at the Red Zone around Trento "As you can see Gentlemen, not much territory has been gained by Ivan as of yet, presumably due to the Warsaw Pact viewing Italy as a secondary objective beyond Germany. The majority of forces we're facing in Italy appear to be Yugoslavian, Romanian, and Hungarian, with heavy Russian Air Support." Palmer stopped and turned towards MacArthur. "Flaciota Flu had already wiped out 10% of the Italian population before the war, it's the hardest hit nation in Europe. They have no chance alone." MacArthur looked down, and took a deep breath before speaking. "We'll send what aid we can, but...just prepare for the worst."

With the blitz across Western Europe, another war was brewing in Asia. May 11th, 1957, The world had been at war for nearly a month, and finally the Chinese made their move. The PLA, supported heavily by North Korean forces quickly launched an invasion into South Korea , and a naval assault on Taiwan. This occurred simultaneously with a surprise assault on Mongolia, and India. The Chinese formally declared war on India, Mongolia, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, but no declaration of war on either the USSR or USA was delivered (or received by the Chinese) despite direct allies of both superpowers being attacked. This showed the fragile politics of the early days of the Third World War, as neither nations were willing to risk a bloody attrition war in Asia alongside Europe.

Well if the democratically-elected Austrian government can't escape that means only one thing once the tide turns against the Soviets. HAPSBURG RESTORATION!!!!

Deus Eversor: Yeah, certainly never a good idea to trust Mao's China.

Gooy: Well originally it was hands off, but the Chinese AI was doing very bad with the amount of theaters I gave it, so I'm currently controlling China. (hopefully go back to hands off when the situation stabilizes.)

H. Appleby: That'd require a very large revolution. xD

Also, I'm afraid I have to postpone the next update until Monday, it shouldn't be any later then that though.

1-4: The Missing, the Dead

Dear James
We've been running on nothing for days now, we've evacuated Munich and met up with a French Brigade. We learned from them that NATO has a new commander, although it was sketchy at best as to who it was. Some famous World War II guy, I've heard everyone from De Gaulle to Patton. Also they say the Chinese have entered the war, but they don't know who's side they're on. So yes, I guess you can say that information is hard to come by. We're facing casualties James. Heavy casualties. Dead, missing, the numbers are staggering. The French forces say they were right on the border when the initial wave came through. They say the fighting hardly even compared to Munich.

HAmburg.png

Pictured: Explosion, Hamburg 1957

They said Hamburg also fell. The city was apparently just brushed aside, with the Soviet Airforce picking away much of the defenders before they even had a chance. World War 3...hard to believe eh? My father and brother both fought in the last one, and we both know how that ended up for them. This feels hopeless out here, morale is at an all time low. I'm scared James. What if we lose? What if the red tide reaches all the way to Paris? Between this flu virus and the Russians...I just don't know how this is going to end.

i wonder if the AI of the US and USSR sticks to any kind of doctrine. i'm not sure what it actually was in that period, but i would guess that americans would just bomb the hell out of the soviets and/or rest of europe if the red army crossed the rhine, or at least when it reached the atlantic coast.

p.s. general LeMay should be still in active service :D

in the first half of the cold war soviets had doctrine of mass infantry with elements of tank blitzkrieg, while in the late cold war it was motorized-paradrop blitzkrieg with targeting not on capitals but on nuke launch sites

1-5: Flames of the Light

The man stopped running to bend down and quickly pick up a discarded rifle. He quickly ducked into a nearby building to collect himself. They came out of nowhere and no civilian evacuation order was given. He and his family were caught in the middle of a massive invasion of their small town. The man was at work when the air raid sirens started blaring, he was told what to do in this situation during a conference the year before, but none of that came in handy. The man stood in the small building, gripping the rifle, and just kept telling himself that if anyone who looked hostile came by, he would fire. He thought about his daughter as he stood there, she was somewhere in the middle of town with her mother. As he stood there thinking, a bright flash shot through the building. The man opened his eyes.

-Overlord, you are aware we will face Soviet Casualties?

-Overlord here: All's confirmed.

The man stood there as all seemed to be dissolving around him. The light had turned into flames, and these flames were quickly spreading, taking out everything in its path. The man sat down and quickly pulled out a picture of his daughter. The man opened his eyes for one last time as what seemed like the world was brought down around him. He sat there for what felt like an entire lifetime. As he was taking one last look at his daughters picture, he felt the flames of the light reach him.
