Started as a count in Byzantium. I am now a doux, and would like to expand. I got a cas bel on my neighbor doux, but when I try to invade the one criteria I do not have is it says the doux must be independant. Does this mean you cannot expand within the Byzantine empire militarily? If so is it like this with all realms? What about the HRE? I would prefer a little more flexibility and not have to completely rely on luck and blood lines to expand within my own empire.

The problem is likely that the ERE's Crown Authority is too high, meaning vassals can't (without plots) declare war on one another for territory. Either try and get CA lowered, or you'll have to declare war on the Emperor to press for other vassals' land.

Thanks. That was pretty much it, I reloaded and looked at it again, I was actually independent myself, and didn't even realize it. I joined back into the empire, but yeah with crown law on medium I am unable to wage war. I attempted to plot to lower but I had like 20% with hardly anyone to chose from and no one would support it, even when I gave them gifts. So seems like it would be difficult to go that route playing the in the Byzantine Empire.
