Ship types do not work that way. Also, there are no small/large ships (this ain't WiR, ya know. :p)

The OP clearly states the different sorts of ships available to you. Light/medium/heavy ships are all military ships. There are no trade ships, they are abstracted as a part of the trade system. There is a specific class of civilian ships for colonising stuff.

If you would send an order looking like this: "Build 3 exploration ships, 1 trade ship, and 1 colony ship" Then I would just go "What." and either ignore the parts which do not exist (i.e. exploration and trade ships) or interpret them as what I think you want.

So what can we research? FTL is obvious, and I'm guessing space forces and ground forces, is there anything else? Or is it supposed to be more customisable than set research fields?

Also is there a floor to how far trade income can decay, or can it fade away to nothing?

Research, well...there's FTL, space forces tech, and ground forces tech and...that's about it I guess. Might not seem much, but...the fact that so much has to be abstracted and what not kinda limits my options. I am considering slightly redoing the space and ground forces research, but I will wait with doing that until after this turn.

As an additional note, to those who have not realised it (which seems to be just about everybody): Research is really expensive. Simultaneously researching and building stuff on turn 1 is liable to kill your economy and bankrupt you. Actually, only doing research is likely to set you back considerably.

As for trade, it can go down to nothing, but not negative. Of course, if somebody is raiding your trade routes then you will incur costs that way by being forced to rebuild your merchant fleet.

EDIT: added a legend for the various icons which a system can possess.

And hopefully my last question for this turn, can you order ships and then move them on the same turn, or does the building take time?

Since they won't be completed this turn regardless of what ships you choose to build: nope.
However, you can issue orders for the turn that they will be completed in.

Sorry to be pain, but could I get a colour change? Yellow on yellow for the system icons is a bit hard to make out. Something like this would be good.

Does the yellow for system quality and size signify a value of three?

1. That was the reason for yellow being invalid as a colour. I will see if I can change your colour, but do not bet on anything as I want all player colours to be distinct from each other. I doubt whatever red colour you have there will be kosher, as there are some with a very similar colour, not to mention the fact that the background is black.

2. Yes.

Yes, I noticed that black background is kinda screwing my system... but I can't really make the Black bloc pink, can I?

Interesting stuff.
I'd play if I had time. But I don't. :p

I'm just wondering, what age do people live to nowadays?

I'm just wondering, what age do people live to nowadays?

That depends on a huge variety of factors which I can't be bothered to do a thorough presentation of. For example: income, location, how the state that one is living in is (e.g. is there public healthcare?), etcetera.

EDIT: Quite the non-answer, eh?

Just a heads up, I am no longer the Christrian Republics. They weren't very exciting so I'm now the Human-Sandhana Republic.

The Aeos Project

Aeos Colonial Flotilla Under Construction

Keteris, the beacon of civilization in a dead region of former Imperium space is a vibrant metropolis. Centuries of immigration had brought incredible diversity to the planet and in an environment governed by libertarian policies there had been few economic or social crisis. Setan civilization as a result is peaceful and prosperous where xenosophonts and humans live together conducting business which takes precedent over any potential racial or ideological conflict. Mazor Three maintains the infrastructure of Qosran and has done so for many years with the aid of engineers and so the population's talent has been able to focus on innovation in other realms of science marketing their inventions and ideas for profit.

Service in the government or military holds little prestige among the Setans and has held little influence except for the fact that it stays out of the business of the populace. Corrin Matheus changed this arrangement a decade ago when having risen in esteem with the Assembly proposed an ambitious project that had been the dream of Proximo Seta but never carried out. Before the Assembly his image and words were transmitted into the retinal mods and public screens of the people at the height of his popularity where he spoke of the dire need for Seta to embrace the vision of Proximo and initiate efforts to settle the stars. Waves of applause and some jeers flooded the Assembly chamber and the forums throughout the city. Matheus who had been a controversial figure inspiring suspicion because of his ambition despite the opposition to his legislation possessed enough votes to have it passed the following week.

Volunteers were selected from the masses to be evaluated and trained for their mission to settle another world. Specialists from a variety of fields were recruited and in the true nature of Setan capitalism, celebrities were hired to market the expedition because the reality was that such a grand project would be expensive and would attract hostility from some circles of society. Ten years has passed since the passing of that fateful legislation and the selected few have been waiting for the call to the colony ship now under construction in orbit.

Setan society's fundamentals have changed little but excitement over the Aeos Project (nicknamed after the orbital station where the project is taking place) has caused a wave of virchtainment and memes depicting the training and work of the experts involved and of the possible adventures to be had on alien worlds. Newsfeeds announced recently that construction of the colony flotilla had started and would take at least a year before completion.

Setan Politics and Society, Part I

RepublicFinancialReformBill-POP.jpg

Setan government operates as a pure democracy with the exception that communities at their own accord can send representatives if they so desire. Assemblies typically contain a few hundred individuals most of whom are independent of any community. Although the Assembly encompasses the whole of the Setan population few actually participate in the debates on the legislative floor although they are completely free to do so at any time through any means. Within the Assembly's chamber there are a few hundred who make their living through politics and who naturally are the most influential members of the governing body. Known as the Eostai or First Speakers who by being present within the speaking chamber legally possess the right to speak before all other voices. The Assembly passes all legislation and elects special leaders during times of crisis from a pool of volunteers. Terms are non-existent but are subject to the whims of the Assembly's opinions, individuals can be censored for a period of up to three months but can never be banned permanently. Convicts, members of all races, genders, political backgrounds, and so forth are allowed to participate.

Politics can become heated but there are a limited number of moments when they can reach to such high degrees of passion given the limited role of the Assembly in managing the affairs of the society. Parties are banned but influential members often attract followers and compromises are made between these cliques often to make progress. There has been no assassinations or violence in Setan politics but the absence of political crisis has made the Assembly and the Eostai soft and perhaps even naive.

Laws exist to enforce contracts between competent parties and to prevent violence and exploitation. Crime has increased in recent years mostly in the form of assassins for hire and corporate spies sent to disrupt and cripple rival businesses. Information is the most important commodity one can have and in the highly competitive global market corporations and businesses will do anything to hinder the other side. Education is handled privately with poor students attending schools with basic literacy and mathematics programs hoping to earn a scholarship to higher end schools. Everything costs money on Qosran with poor individuals competing for scholarships to the next level of education. Merit however is prized above all in choosing workers and associates due to the intense competitive environment of the economy. Machines have replaced bionts in common labor but given that the average intellect quotient of Setans is 125 there is plenty of work for most.

Quick question: What is a good spot for me to put my new alien race?

Quick question: What is a good spot for me to put my new alien race?

K7? J11? K3? J7? F9? (Okay, probably not F9...The Merchanos are assuredly not going to be happy if you start there)

K7 sounds fine.

I'll update this post later with a proper RP fluff thing. (edit: in progress)
For now, I will start in K7 with:

Location: K
Home System: Kyabetsu System
Homeworld: Kyabetsu
Leader: Emperor Tanaka
Colour: Dark Red

The shofixty are best described as a race of "meta-marsupials". They typically have brown fur, and have an extremely short gestation period. Because of this, the Shofixti can reproduce rapidly and age into adulthood within a few months.

Their rather primitive civilisation was recently discovered by a group of researchers from an unknown but benevolent alien race, and given what they themselves as a "technological, sociological, and genetic boost to the Stars".

The shofixti maintain a rigid feudal order. The word of their Emperor is absolute. They live by a strict code of conduct and standard of honour that resembles early feudal japan, and their style of warfare reflects this: They usually rather die in glorious suicide than surrender. Military conflicts amongst shofixti tend to be rather destructive, and if it weren't for their high reproductive rates their society would probably be doomed.

Reminder: The deadline for orders is: before 12th May (A Saturday) 2012 (GMT+1)
Those who have not sent in their orders by that time will either be ignored or temporarily placed under an AI (most likely ignored).

I'll send orders as soon as I have any idea what I have to work with in terms of stats.
