Thread: Unofficial Salem Wiki

  1. #61
    Just tried like 30mins ago...still no-go...
"Smarthost" is a configuration setting, refer to the documentation of the email-server software you're using cause its done different in respect to which server you're using...
In short a "smarthost" in SMPTP servers just means: Use this server, the configured smarthost, to send all outgoing emails through like a relay/proxy...
Its normally used to send from within a LAN to the outside, but todays global internet sequrity guidelines require you to use your ISP's SMPTP server to be able to send emails using a private email server.
Most big SMTP servers on the internet and those used by many ISP's all use a global blacklist to block emails from normal consumer IP#'s to fight the spam caused by them...
A lot of these servers also use digital signatures to verify that they are talking to an approved, by that server, email server...
So its very advisable that you configure your mail server to use your ISP's SMTP server for outgoing mail...

Sorry for the technical mambo-jumbo here folks

    *edit*
Here is some info on wikipedia about it...

    *edit2*
I used my own email-server to activate my account on your wiki, so my problem is solved...
    I couldn't resist anymore

Hey guys. Sorry I've been really ill the last couple of days and even though I'm a bit better I still feel like ___. So, Sorry I didn't get on IRC or respond to this issue.

Sab, whatever you did worked. I tried just now and got the confirmation email. Thanks for your time and effort.

well, glad it did. i still don't seem to be able to get through to facebook, though, they require SPF records, which is effort that i don't feel like going through.

Not sure whether to post here or send a PM to sab or what, so I'll post but you can let me know what to do in future instances. In the terrain section, oakworth has been left out of the grassland section (possibly badlands, but I've only seen them once and have no idea if they had oakworth).

Also, have no idea if it was true or not, but someone told me that Jorb said in IRC that the trails are animal crossings where animals spawn more. I know I live near one and I've never seen so many bears and deer. So, maybe someone can confirm this with Jorb and update it on wiki as well?

Edit: I'm still sick with high fevers and so very stupid it seems. I posted this partly because I thought I could not edit the terrain page for some reason, but I wasn't logged in. Ug, I've had this fever for 4 days, I feel like I'm going insane. Anyways, I added oakworth to grasslands, but still am not sure if they are found in badlands.

New question, on the new world gourd page, is there a reason it says "Was found near to Uncivilized Area" in the very last line? If so I'll leave it, but it seems that is misleading. It can be found in forests whether civilized or not.

sabinati what about RU subdomain for wiki? We can make it on our own hosting but i think it would be better if new players to have single wiki.

I love wikis like this. It's, in my opinion, one of the main signs of a community and game with potential.
I will keep my eyes on this thread and the wiki to make sure you don't get any issues with people ruining it.

i definitely think it needs multilanguage support, and i can run it all from same server, i just need to install some stuff. it's on my list of things to do. if anyone has experience setting up multilanguage on mediawiki, send me a pm.

What I think is that everything on the wiki should be easily accessible in-game.

Some kind of in-game knowledge base? Kind of takes away the magic in my opinion, players should not get all knowledge served on a plate.

If the interface was good, the wiki would be unneeded. Why do I need to open my browser to look up what item to craft to get my pots & pans up? It's just because of all the sub-menus making it annoying to access them and no hover data on the craftables. You'll have to make one yourself and list all the proficiency values. ... or just look on the wiki. This would be unneeded if this data would just be provided ingame.

Another thing is new skills, they should give a pop-up message that you have learned 2 new food recipes, an inspirational and how to build a kiln with an explanation. Now you sometimes only realize hours later. Once again because going through all the sub-menus is such a pain.

The sub-menus are also tiny on a big screen which makes them even more of a pain. I sincerely hope these are just placeholders.

    - edit -

Another big thing to consider is the new players. This is a big reason why they are so lost. Info that should be in-game but isn't. The established player base will know where to find it though which widens the gap even more.

"Players should not get all knowledge served on a plate" but it already is, it's just on the plate of the experienced players only atm.

If you want to make things unknowable then you should make them random, not needing a wiki.

I agree that there should be a lot more information at hand in game, such as being able to hover over items before you craft them to discover what you'll get.

What a wiki has that the in-game information will not be able to / should not have is guides and longer explanations on things. A game should have the pure numbers and facts stated whilst a wiki has the chance to explain them in a more lengthy fashion.

We're planning to have a meeting at Paradox next week to talk about what we feel needs to be done in the game before more players are brought in, I will make sure to bring up the point of in-game tooltips.

New skills could be solved in the old school way where the chat states what new things you have learned to craft. I have often found myself wondering 'when the hell did I learn this thing?' when browsing through my craftables.

Edit: Hi Teurlinx, haven't had the chance to say hello.

    That's great to hear.

Nothing to take away from wikis for strategies and other complex stuff and the editors are doing a good job, but the pure data should be in-game

I always used Ender's client in HnH, and whenever you learned how to make something new it would tell you in the system message window. I dont really know if it did this in the default client, but it was very convienent.

totally agree. while the wiki may be able to present better format (charts etc), all of the basic info should be there on tooltips etc.
