Getting a claim on dukedom

Hey folks!

Im currently playing as the count of Northumberland, and through some scheming and warfare I have 2/3 of the de jure lands of the Duke of Northumberland. Do i need create a claim on the duchey? despite personally owning two thirds of it?
Is my only way to claim the duchal title through marriage?

It is a bit annoying to own more of Northumberland the the Duke, and i can't seem to work out how to get the title from him!

Are you the vassal of the duke or the king directly?

You can usurp the title from him, but not if you are his vassal.

You cannot use the "Usurp" function against characters within the same realm. So if you're both vassals of England, no usurping.

As long as the duccession laws there are Agnatic-Cognatic, you can marry yourself or your heir to a female claimant and then press her claim in a war, only to later inherit it.

If he has only one county left, you can forge a claim on that county, or find a claimant to said county, then press your own, or courtiers claim, and in so doing deleting the Ducal title. Once done, you just re-create it.

It's also possible to forge a claim on the Ducal title directly via the Forge Claim Chancellor action, but this is extremely rare, and not worth planning for.

If you're his direct vassal, you'll first need to declare a war of independence against him, so as to be free to maneuver as a direct vassal of the king.

The same way you forge claims on counties. Place your chancellor in the province where the duke resides, have a good chancellor and then just hope you get a claim on the duchy instead of the county.

I believe your chancellor needs 15+ diplomacy to forge duke titles.

Sometimes they forge the duke title out right. Sometimes they first forge the county title and you have to leave your chancellor there for several more years and he will forge the duke title then
