Thread: Unit data viewer application

    Unit data viewer application

    Hello all,

I've played the demo of NWAC and found the lack of a unit database quite inconvienent (especially for beginners like me on the subject naval warfare).

So I've made my own (for the demo, but I expect it to run with the full game):
Nothing fancy, mind you. But should be ok enough for pausing the game and ALT+TAB to the app for a lookup whats incoming

    Screenshots 0.9/1.0:

    File:
    Update 1.01b

    Update 1.0

    Update 0.9:

    Update 0.75:
    http://depositfiles.com/files/x04ta4hck
    Initial File:
    http://depositfiles.com/files/jcmja9pl4

On the first run the app needs to know where your steam folder is (and tries to guess the rest) or point it directly to the datafiles.
(It writes an ini file to remember this settings)

The rest should be self explanatory =)

You can search the units by long/short name, internal id, vesselname or country code.

Let me know if it works for you or crash & burns spectaculary...

    Kind Regards
    Michael

PS: This is NOT an editor (yet), it only reads the unit/sensor/weapon files and leaves them in mint condition

    Edit5:
    New File (1.01b)
    only a small change
    - units show their icon that they use if they are unidentified (unit page).

    Edit4:
    New File (1.01)
    - Added the unit icons from JanH.
The icons are compiled in the res.db, so they don't clutter your programm folder.
    - if a icon is shown, click on it to enlarge it to full size.

    Edit3:
    New File (1.0)
    - Jobs Done =)
    - New NWACPedia page that gives an overview about the unit (basic values like speed & range, sensors, weapons, etc)
    - Unit page contains now much more in depth details about the unit, but less about sensors and weapons (these got their own detail page).
    - loading an unit from the search pages prepares both pages (NWACPedia and Unit), doubleclick on the id field (blue) to quickly jump between both

    Edit2:
    New file (0.9)
    - New sensor page
    - overhaul of weapon page
    - new seach functions (search sensors, filters, toggles for kind of names to list
    - app remembers which search toggles where used
    - nautical mile factor. set to 1 if you want ranges in meters. (need reload of data)
    - hyperlinking of data, doubleclick on a unit/weapon/sensor (blue text) to jump to the detailpage
    - all datafields for weapons and sensors is read from the data files and displayed (usefull if this thingy turns into an editor ). The unit page will follow.
There are some fields that seems to be fragments from development and are not actually used by the engine.

    Edit1:
    new File (0.75)
    - Added a search function and display for weapons
    - Search shows all names (long/short, internal, vesselnames)
    - shows loadout weapons of carried units

That's excellent, venomxxx. I think this calls for a "3rd party applications" page on the wiki

Any chance we might see some (simple) editing capabilities in the future?

Nice! Thank you! Works great on my full version on a Macbook Pro running Bootcamp and Win XP (just for compatibility info).

If you have time, could you add a "combo box" / dropdown list on the search page that allow you to just show ships, planes etc.? Also for the weapons, guns, missiles, bombs etc.?

    Good job!

Thanks for sharring it with us m8!!!

    @General Baker
I'll wait for the map editor, to see what it can do. Maybe we will be blessed with a full editor by the devs

    @stickactuator
good to know it works on different machinges and not only mine
A filter for the search tab should be easy, every unit is already classified as a surfaceship, aircraft, missile, etc in the data files.

Thanks for all your hard work. If you can include an editing function that would be great but this really helps as it is. Thanks again.

done some messing around with the P8 ASW loadout and c01s01 scenario file.
even notepad can be a mighty editor

    Version 1.0 is done!

To celebrate I sunk Bergen Air Base under the sea and send my submarine on air patrol =)

    A more serious thing:
JanH, would it be ok if I make screenshots from the GUI to grab the unit icons to include 2d side/topviews to the app ?
    I mean these icons:

It would be neat to have them on the unit page =)

I say, any chance you could host this program on another site? (http://localhostr.com or http://mediafire.com for e.g) The current one keeps telling me I've downloaded too many times, wait 24hrs etc. I've not downloaded it in 5 days!

  17. #17
    @General Baker, Sure thing =)

So, the remaining question is: do we need a data_editor or will the map editor cover that area as well ? =D

The mission editor is not going to cover this extensive functionality, not for quite some time at least.

  19. #19
ah well, then I'll look what I can do =)

Thanks a bunch for the alternate download

    Some feedback:

Highlighted rows don't align when you scroll down one column. Would it be better to use an actual table object (of some kind)?

Side and GUIviews don't show up for me: is that just not implemented yet?

It'd be nice if it automatically tried C:\Program Files\Steam first, as that's generally where everyone keeps their Steam folder.

    * reload

    Those points aside, great program!
