Hi all,

While I didn't miss electronic warfare in the missions so far (am at Ragnarok Armada now) I'm still curious how it works. I'm not talking HARM attacks because I understand how those works.
What I'd like to see is a bit of info on jamming/electronic warfare. In one of the missions I could launch a plane that dropped radar jammers. Great, but what value is it? Send it with an attack group to the front and deploy near a base to make it harder for the enemy to attack my planes? I didn't really get it so far.

Hope someone can help me out :)

You're on the right track. I use jamming aircraft to escort offensive strikes. I will sometimes outfit a second aircraft to act as a decoy and jam on a different axis then the actual attack. When defending, use them in between your HVT (High Value Targets) and the enemy attack axis. May help soft kill some enemy missiles, make it easier to shoot down the rest.

Question: can EW-aircraft destroy incoming missiles (say to an airfield) with their jamming equipment?
 
So. Have say a growler over your feet with jamming on will make them harder to find? Or....What about having an ECM plane as part of a flight of 4 Naval Strike planes. Is it possible/feasbile to have the ECM plane go with them and manually deploy and move the ECM area of effect to cover the flight all the way there effectively hiding them?

I thought the ECM would affect those caught in the Area of Effect only not those looking into that area?

Correct. Jamming will make your fleet harder to detect, but it only works when the jamming area includes the enemy radar.

If you have a flattop in your force and the enemy radiates from an awacs, you can really forget to hide :) If you have modern stealthy frigates, they are much harder to detect and jamming can really help.
 
Even on land targets with fixed GPS coordinates there are GPS jammers and electronic warfare that can mess up the gps signal so that missiles have trouble hitting the correct coordinates.

Regarding Jamming/EW: As far as I am aware, most (if not all) EW/Jamming aircraft aren't limited to four/two "jams". Wouldn't it be better to have jamming somewhat similar to f. example sensors, where you can turn it on (Actively jamming in a set radius around the aircraft) or off (Not jamming at all)? I know this specific feature is putting away a few of the people I know, because they don't understand the reasoning behind jamming being limited.

On an unrelated note: When can we expect the second patch? If I remember correctly from some bug thread, jamming is pretty useless until then, no?
 
We know jamming is not modeled realistically. If we made jamming work as sensors do, it would place a large burden on the already overworked sensor/detection code. We thought this was a good compromise.

Second patch is ready, but Valve's ftp server is not talking to us right now. We planned to have it out this evening. If it's not coming back up, it will not happen before tomorrow evening.
 
Do I understand correctly that you need to "drop" the jamming location like you would drop a sonobouy? And is it a physical thing? Or just an action at a location? Does altitude matter? Is it better to be high altitude? Low? No difference?

And is it correct that the jamming range circle needs to encompass the the origination of the radar source, not the target of the radar source?

Is there any indication of land-based radar other than the airbases themselves? Are there separate SAM or radar sites located off the base?

Jamming will have no effect.

They would be covered, whether being inside or outside the circle, since it is the position of the enemy sensor platform that matters. Note that they are not entirely invisible, but the effect of the radar is dramatically reduced.
 
By the explanation, no. All that matters in the current simulation is if the radar is inside the "jam zone" or not.

Realistically, a target would be difficult to detect well if an active jammer is within a lobe when the radar is scanning in the direction of the target. (Basically in the same direction plus minus a few degrees; some radar antennas will have side lobes too.) Since jamming is anything but subtle, you'd want to give it a wavy bearing line in the direction of the jammer to indicate that jamming is going on.
