"Check for updates"-button isn't working?

When I click check for updates nothing happens... other than that game runs correctly. I just installed the game, but it's still vanilla (at least in task bar it reads v1.0). So how am I supposed to fix this problem or do I have to manually install all the updates now?

Are you using the Steam version?
If yes, update the game using Steam.
If no, probably, only manually.

Nope, not using steam. I wonder where can I download patches or the supposedly free add-on Designer's cut since their homesite only has patches for designer's cut. And there isn't any link to download this add-on which is weird...
