It is possible skipping '42 Assault gun to '44 Assault gun in CORE.
The question is which already produced '40 Assault gun brigade can be upgraded to '44 Assault gun without '42 tech?
I'm working on AFV models now.

The '44 AG tech disables the previous tech and also sets the previos AG model to obsolete so an upgrade should happen. Not researching the '42 tech will cost you some nice build cost reductions though.

Should that really be possible though? it seems a bit gamey and weird. Also there's no way the AI can understand choices like that.

If you´ve built ´40 AG you still have to upgrade to ´42 model before ending up with ´44. You can save the research time (and slot) in exchange for a little more IC days that are necessary to build new ´44 AG. The consequences of such a choice aren´t really that big IMO.

If you are tank heavy - lots of tank (hard) divs and infantry (soft) units equipped with AG brigades - researching the 1942 tech saves you a lot of IC. This does not only affect producing new divs/bds but also upgrade/reinforce cost.

Yeah I know it doesn't make a massive difference, but this probably isn't the only instance where it's possible to 'skip' techs. My main concern is the AI really though.

Well, the AI researches what we tell it to research. We can tell the AI to skip this or to research this. It´s just a question of the ai files.
