2.1. The Spring

President Manuel Azana was upset. The nominalization for new Prime-Minister didn't pass the Senat vote. Instead of Francisco Largo Caballero, he was forced to accept that for the moment Manuel Portela Valladares remain the Prime-Minister. This has triggered also a wave of protests from his party's members.
A week after elections, Portela has reinstated Lt. General Juan Hernandez Sarabia as the Head of Intelligence, based on the performance comparison between him and the replacement chosed by the Popular Front. Again Azana couldn't do anything, as the Popular Front depend to much on Portela's party, in order to maintain the majority of seats in the parlament.

For the next two weeks, diplomatic activity was intense, a lot of new trade agreements have been established.
The new Foreign Affairs Minister, Diego Martinez Barrio, have proven an excelent choice. Intelligent and hardworking, with a solid background in diplomacy, and mastering negociation skills, he was able to make only very advantageous deals, succeding in generating a steady resources incoming flow.
Oil stockpiles were growing by the day, new storage facilities for coal, iron ore and rare materials were been built near most of the factories. The military supplies stockpiles were reporting steady decrease, but this was a temporary situation, as they were traded for gold. Lot of it.
This stockmarket transactions allowed Spain to estimate that by the middle of March, UK will need a lot of hard currency, for which they will pay 2 tons of supplies per million gold.

One week after elections, PCE, supported by CNT and other small worker unions, has started negociations with the Soviet Union. Discutions were conducted in secret meetings, facilitated by Foreign Affairs Minister in form of oil business trades. At the beginning of March, the soviets agreed to send an economic committee, made by specialists in eficiency and work planning improvements, in order to adress the spanish economy issues, and facilitate transition to a planned economy.

After implementing the changes suggested by soviet committee, an increase by 15% of the industrial output was reported. However, this also lead to an increase of difficulties regarding military equipments upgrades, but the detail report show that increase of output is compensating this.

2.1. International influence

Just some weeks after the succesfull implementation of the soviets advices, unfortune strike again. The reactionary industrialists, secretly aided by United Kingdom, launched a campaign to undermine the unions, and managed to reverse much of the changes, so the 15 % increase of the industrial output was lost, also some production lines were slightly sabotated. The future start to look darker for the Spanish Republic ...

But Diego Martinez Barrio wasn't the man to give so easy. The comercial trades go on and on, eventualy he convinced Japan to trade with Spain. Some japanese companies even open joint-ventures with the spanish ones, and luck strike again, the japanese methods, combined with spanish will to work increase again the output of factories.
