Not so strange, probably, but still pretty good for me. I'm playing a count (start 1070, CK2+) which became a duke in the Byzantine empire, and the basileus became bulgar, while the crusaders were so succesful then won Jerusalem, Egypt and Antioch.

Anyway, here we have the queen of Jerusalem empress consort of the Byzantine empire, and her heir is her orthodox son also the byzantine heir.

Upon switching to Zoroastrianism the CoAs retained their Christian images, but the borders became similar to Muslim ones. Totally worth it, looks great imo.

I don't understand

The Pope lifted the King's excommunication at the King's discretion, since he apparently proved to the Pope that he is no longer a horrible christian. What's so odd?
