You can effectively use your light cavalry to capture the strategically important locations throughout the whole battlefield, thus granting you different bonuses (spells or other boosts) very early in the fight. They are really good in flanking the enemy army or trampling archers and light infantry too, but you should keep a good distance from the spearmen if you want to avoid heavy losses.
