Why are Merchant Republic elections every 50 years?

It looks like in vanilla they are every 4 years, like most other republics.

Seeing as no one in the know has answered, I might as well say that I think its based on the Venetian system where Doges were elected for life.
If anyone wants to use any events, decisions, etc that I post here in their mod, then feel free. All I ask is that you massage my ego by saying what you are doing with it in a reply to the thread you find it on.

If that's true, why not have rulers reign for life like in Republican Dictatorships?

Because in republics, you have to define a frequency of elections. Otherwise, they'd be monarchies, and there'd be no elections, but rather successions, dynasties, and so on.
