I just prepurchased King Arthur II and I have to say I am astonished. The "prologue" campaign is already awesome and really has a lot of content! I also love how everything good in the first King Arthur was kept and just perfected even further while the bad stuff (eg. tiny battles, victory through capturing) was removed.
However, performance is very much terrible on my PC.
(Windows 7 64
AMD Athlon II X4 640 @ 3.00GHz
4GB RAM
NVidia GeForce GTX 460)
Reducing the graphics to bare minimum helped a bit, but it still runs with no more than 20 FPS in battle and overall seems very laggy. Now I know I don't exactly have a gamer PC but it's not like my setup was totally bad either.. is it just because this version is not so well optimized or can I forget ever playing this game fluently?

Hi everyone!

I really felt I wanted to update my earlier post (see on page 3 of this thread), as I realized that it didn´t come across as intended.

So first of all, I want to make this crystal clear - the entire development team is busy working on fixing performance issues that prevent playing the game on the required quality level…
We absolutely take your comments and feedback regarding this issue very seriously!

During development of King Arthur II our aim was to set the game to at least 24-30 FPS, as we felt a consistent 24+ FPS gives an acceptable baseline experience for an RTS.

While we work on fixing all the issues which may ruin the fun in the game there are a couple of things you can do to improve the FPS rate in the game:

As you all know, King Arthur II features a campaign view and a battle view. By changing the video settings you can improve both the battle and campaign view performance.
In the main menu go to the options menu > video > advanced.
Lower the sliders further to improve performance. Restart the game for changes to take effect.

Uncheck the following options as they are the ones that require most CPU/GPU power:
- Ambient Occlusion
- Antialiasing
- Motion Blur

To further improve performance, uncheck additional video options (especially Vsync) or try lowering resolution. Restart the game for changes to take effect.

Trust me when I say that our entire development team has lived, breathed and slept with King Arthur II for the past year/s and we love our games and will do everything we can to enhance it.
Our ambition is that all you gamers out there should be able to play and enjoy the game as intended and we will definitely keep working towards that for as long as it is needed to you all to enjoy it!

@Steelphoenix:

It would be a huge help if you could provide me 2-3 screenshots:
1. about basic video settings in the game with native resolution
2. about basic video settings in the game with problematic resolution
3. a screenshot where the active spells tab is missing

2. & 3. can be created in one screenshot if you bring up the game menu when the issue is already visible.

Many thanks for the help.

glad to see that you are working on this issue :)

as for reducing details and disabling options like vsync, for me at least, its impossible as they are all disabled already and i get 10 or lower fps out of combat. Very laggy and stutters like hell.
So, for now i'll wait updates. Putting this game on hold for the time being :(

I do appreciate getting a reply in this thread, if the tips about - Ambient Occlusion - Antialiasing and - Motion Blur would have granted me any kind of fps increase i would have been overjoyed.. I would gladly have accepted anything that made the game run in 25fps. but at lowest setting i get about 12fps on the campaign map and 5-15 on the battle map.
Higher setting run at about the same fps.
That's where i get a bit cranky. If i could run the game at 30fps on the lowest quality i'd happy.
But getting 40fps on high settings on battlefield 3 I'd and 10fps on a campaign map on low settings in KA2 doesn't seem like the best use of my hardware, and i do love the game. Hoping i do get to play it at a decent framerate sometime, the prolouge was at least playable.

Also if you wan't a dxdiag, screenshots or video I'd be happy to supply them.

Sounds great to hear that you're on the job. Was thinking of a refund but after reading this I will be holding onto the game. After all, I loved the first game so I definately want to play the sequel.

Good luck and hope you fix the problem.

So, 5 patches later and finally able to post here, I still don't see the light. With medium to minimum settings (and no v-sync so I have to look at a tearing picture) I did manage to get a stable 30fps on the prologue map, but the battle performance has even worsened since the preorder-beta-version!

I get 15 fps when the camera-flight is over, looking at my troops. When I dare to get even closer the fps diminish to a crawl, between 7 and 10 fps!

Here's my dxdiag for who cares about it:

But I already know that it is probably not my setup to blame. I played all the big games of 2011 and 2012 and King Arthur II is the only one that performs so badly. You should be ashamed to release a game in this condition. I recently read a post of one of your beta testers over at the Steam forums and he had nothing good to say about your testing.

This was my first Paradox / Neocore game. This was my first taste of the forums and the support ("hello new guy, welcome to the forums...btw you're not allowed to post for the next two weeks, thanks!"). And it will be the last.

I just started attempting to play the game today. Needless to say it runs like a slide show on a Quadro FX2800 Quadro 5010M. Runs pretty horridly on a Radeon 7950. Why? What is the excuse for a game with graphical capacity of say Empire Total War.. Running.. This slow. *its ticking me off* PC gamer gave this game a 77. (close enough to 80 for me to try) and I'm regretting it.

Can we get some game engine optimizations or something?

I bought the game on weekend as well and it's not running smoothly at all. I've got pretty much the same performance issues and from reading through this thread it seem that there is something wrong with the game instead of the PC rigs... is the developer still looking into this or are we on our own here? Neocore_Kate hasn't been on this forum for more than two weeks...

@ Salah-ad Din: Your PC is very light on the RAM side, 4GB is hardly enough for decent games. 1GB dedicated memory for the graphics should be enough, but the RAM... dunno, you should probably double or tripple that. Assuming C: is your OS drive you might get problems with virtual RAM as it's rather small as well and the swap file might very limited in it's size. You might check if there's an update for you graphic drivers as well, they're a year old.

I picked up both games in the recent steam sale and honestly, I'm appalled at the state of King Arthur II. Performance is terrible, even with the DX9 version. I can't even find a config file to manually tweak options.

For the record, I run a core i5 750 @ 3.6gig, 8Gig 1600Mhz RAM and a GTX570. My system is not the issue here.

I'm concerned about the silence, tbh. With the recent announcement of a new Neocore game I guess we can assume all resources are aimed at that, and have been since the forums went quiet, back in Feb by the looks of the postings.

This is a disgusting situation; leaving aside the outrageous 24 fps comment, for which Neocore should honestly be ashamed, you're selling a game that barely functions for those of us with decent rigs, and doesn't function at all for a fair few others (judging by the number of threads on the subject after the recent sale).

So come on Neocore_Kate - an answer please. Will KA2 be patched to an acceptable level of performance, or have you switched all resources to this new game? And if the latter is correct, how can you justify selling a substandard, non-functioning product?

As paying customers I think we deserve some kind of response. As things stand now, I'll never buy another Neocore game and will quite happily tell everyone I know to do the same. I'd like you to change that, please.

I contacted a paradox mod regarding the absence of Neocore people (seeing that they haven't been online her for two weeks or more). Let's see what they can do.

Getting the same performance as approx. everyone else. Was the same in Arthur 1 as well. The game is so good that I still play it through ...but it's unplayable when it dips to 15 fps. Neocore should fix their engine before they release a new title like this. If not, then this is the last Neocore game I play.

My rig is Intel Q6600, 6 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 560Ti running Win7 64-bit.

Btw, reducing Character Detail to minimum makes the battles bearable.

\Edit
The game still runs like shit even if we dial all settings to minimum ...that's my real problem. If I need to turn off Ambient Occlusion to get 40 fps, fine, minimum details, sure! Still getting about 25 fps with everything set to minumum should not be acceptable on a decent rig. I know mine isn't top of the line, but it should run this game just fine.
