I'm playing a multiplayer campaign as Japan against my friend, whos playing the United States. I've conquered most of the Pacific, but I've been crippled by submarine warfare, even though I've researched all the relevant escort efficiency and ASW tech and have a bunch of escorts.

Any suggestions?

You need hunter killer groups. There are two theories on how to deploy them. One is to patrol in an area that your conveys are being attacked in, the other is to station by the move order a group in the sea zone the attack occurs in. The groups need to consist of DD and perhaps a CL as leader. I use as Britain 2DD and 1CL. Assign a Ca if you are in an area the enemy may attack you with surface fleets.

Ohh ya warning, pay attention to reports of battles with your hunter killer groups and if they are near enemy air power. I found as Britain I needed about twice as many groups as I used so I could replace the damaged ones BEFORE my ships were sunk.

Also be careful of raiding Heavy Crusiers.

In my current mp game. As Germany I sent my heavy crusiers out convoy raiding in the Atlantic and I was able to suprise GB player by killing a large amount of destroyers and have now tied alot of his naval resources into finding my CA's and hunting them down,.

In my current game I have a flotilla of 3 DDs patrolling the western part of the Baltic Sea, I have 2 Cags on "Naval strike" in the same area and I got a carrier task force with a CVL and some CLs on "intercept" in Kiel and yet a bunch of British subs is raiding my Stettin-Königsberg convois.

Have you closed the Baltic off by capturing Denmark? If you have then assign several groups of hunter killers to stationary positions on the route, may take a litle bit but eventually you will sink those subs. Usually regular fleets get caught in there too so watch out for that.

No I havn't. I am not complaining that they can get into the baltic but I am puzzled that they can roam that baltic bathtub without even getting located. (And I have ASW upgrades as well as RADAR, not sure about those CAGS atm tho, think they are just being upgraded). I mean, that Stettin-Königsberg-route ist quite predictable, isn't it? The Kriegsmarine should be able to keep it safe. :)

Obviously an ASW fleet would accomplish saving your convoys, but I'd rather focus the manpower and effort on offense rather than defense, especially when you can just spend some IC on convoys while you are on the offense to offset whatever losses you incur. Shame on the US player for having fully teched out subs lol. Subs still have smaller ranges than surface fleets so you can still reach their bases. In the pacific its not very hard to clear out the various islands, its just time consuming. I recommend working the allied islands before the US joins them that way you get alot of the work done before they enter.

Multiplayer game can be extremely and lethally different from single player game in this aspect. If your enemies have researched sub visibility, convoy raiding and other related techs way ahead you need to take mirror countermeasures. That is, go for sub detection asap and also other convoy protection techs but detection is the most important one.

People also use lone wolfs - 20 enemy subs, one per stack, upgraded with 3-4 years ahead techs can ruin the whole game for the UK or the US...and even Japan. So you need to have DDs upgraded with techs way ahead (at least 2 years ahead) and split them into maximum fleets. 2 DDs per fleet optimal IMO.

Remember, extremely modern and dispersed DDs are the best way of dealing with sub-focused enemy.

Also remember, CLs have much lower sub detection than DDs.

Naval bombers are also good but they have limited range. If they could fly everywhere I would use solely them, instead of DDs.

One more thing - if you situation gets really nasty (like losing 10 or more convoys daily) then you need to switch to manual convoy control and turn off all resource convoys + non-essential supply convoys until you have proper anti-sub hunter groups.

I just buy more convoys and invade the ports he's using as the supplier of his convoy raiders.

I agree with Miss CplKatie.
