Thread: Complete EU3 Nations Flagpack (For certain values of "complete")

Complete EU3 Nations Flagpack (For certain values of "complete")

    Hi, all.

Since my "Miscellaneous Flagpack" thread sort of devolved into me doing large swathes of the EU3 roster, I've decided to go ahead and start an official thread and commit to creating full sets of flags for every nation in EU3 that is not also present in Victoria 2. This is specifically to support the use of the EU3-to-Vic2 converter project, which I've enjoyed using for a couple games now.

My general process for this pack, as I work on it, is as follows:
-Only nations that do not exist in a directly transferable form in Victoria 2 will be created. For instance, I won't be making flags for "France" (obviously) nor "Frankfurt" (which is in as "Frankfurt am Main").
-Where possible I will try to base flags off of historical flags, but because many of these nations only existed for a short time in the EU3 time period, there won't be anything resembling Victorian-era flags for these nations. As such, many flags will be largely speculative in nature. In other cases, I will create flags based on the country's modern region designation.
-I'll be working in chunks based on the EU3 countries.txt file (as of the first post of this, for example, I've done the #france, #italy, and #hre sections).
-I'm definitely open to feedback and suggestions, but my main concern is getting the pack done. I will note feedback, but it is likely that unless there's an egregious error I'll wait to fix problems until after the entire pack is done.
-There will be come cases where the preview images in this thread and those actually in the file are slightly different. There are some places where I've fixed problems with existing flags but haven't updated the preview files.
-Where I recommend to convert one EU3 country into a V2 one, I will make every effort to not suggest converting to a country that already exists in EU3. If I do, let me know and I'll fix it.

Permission is granted to mod authors to use these flags at will, as long as credit is given. This only extends to flags that I've created; I cannot give permission to use another author's flags (such as the Brittany and Corsica flags from chandlerw1). Check their threads for that.

  2. #2
    French Pack - download
All nations under #france in the EU3 countries.txt, except the following:
    -France / Rev. France
    -Sardinia-Piedmont

It includes two files created by chandlerw1 in his Symbols Flag Pack:
    -Brittany
    -Corsica

Default - The Burgundian Cross, as borrowed from the Spanish monarchy flag, and given a border to distinguish it from SPA.
    Republic - Same as default
Monarchy - The flag of the current Burgundy region, which is based on the old Duchy of Burgundy's coat of arms, modified to remove the quartered Fleur de Lises, replacing them with the Burgundian cross.
Communism - The Burgundian cross rotated and placed in opposition to the standard communist symbol.
Fascism - "Inverted" Burgundian cross, black border. No particular symbolism here.

Monarchy is the EU3 flag rebuilt for V2; the others are original designs using the coat of arms of Alencon, except the Fascist flag which is simply based on the Republic design

All flags based upon the Coat of Arms of the County of Armagnac, as used in EU3

This French home of popes' flags combines the city's coat of arms with some layout choices from the Papal States' EU3 flag; it also uses both "key" symbols associated with the city.

Base designs from the region's flag and coat of arms; communist is totally fictional and speculative.
(The default flag is only jaggy in the preview; it has been fixed in the pack)

Series of flags based on the region's Coat of Arms

Toulose (the country in EU3) is a city, which is the capital of the region of Languedoc, hence the name change for V2. All flags based upon the original flag (still used). Communist flag uses the Finnish communist party symbol largely for aesthetics.

Default, Republic, and Monarchy flags based upon flags in use by the region. Commie/Fascist flags based upon the Republic flag (which is itself used by an autonomy movement).

Series of flags based upon the Provencal coat of arms; the communist flag is based on the republic/default design

    Monarchy - Flag of Alsace
Default - Modified version of the Monarchy flag
Republic - Quartered Default with the flag of Lorraine
Communist - Flag of the Republic of Alsace-Lorraine, a Soviet-style republic that lasted for about a week near the end of WW1
Fascist - Simplified version of the Monarchy flag

Monarchy - Flag of Guyenne and Aquitaine
Default - Based on coat of arms of the Bordeaux region (which contains Guyenne)
Others based on one of these two flags

Speculative flags based upon the traditional flag of the region.

Default, Monarchy: the flag of Berry
Republic: Based on the coat of arms of the region Berry is a part of
Communism: Based on flag of the capital of Berry
Fascism: Stylized, Fascized version of the Republic flag

All based on the traditional flag of the region, with the red slash being the primary focal point for the designs. The preview of the communist flag is messy, but the actual file is cleaned up.

All based on the coat of arms of the region. The Republic flag has an additional element from the COA of the Ariege region of France, which is where Foix is located.

Monarchy - Original flag of the region
All others - Stylized versions of the Monarchy flag

Monarchy - Flag of the House of Orleans
Default - Stylized adaptation of the House flag
Republic - Modern flag of the region of Orleans
Communism - Modified version of the Default flag
Fascism - Adapted from a fascist France flag design

    Included from chandlerw1's Symbols Flagpack:

  3. #3
    Italian Pack - download

This is all of the nations under #italy in the EU3 countries.txt file, except for Piedmont (covered by Sard-Pied), Tuscany, Modena, Italy, and the Papal States (already in V2).

Monarchy: Flag of the Patriarchate of Aquileia
Default: Flag of the County of Görz, an HRE state containing Aquileia
Republic: Flag of the region of Aquileia is located in
Communist: Based on the coat of arms of Trieste, the capital of Aquileia's modern region
Fascist: Based on coat of arms of County of Görz

Typo on the nation name, that should be Etruria.
All based on the Kingdom of Etruria's flag.

All based on the city's traditional flag; the blue-white stripes come from the local football team's logo.

All based on the city-state's traditional flag.

Monarchy: the Coat of Arms of the Duchy of Mantua
Default: flag of the Duchy of Mantua
All others: based on one or both of these flags.

Monarchy: the flag of the Kingdom of Naples
Default: based on the modern coat of arms of the city
Republic: flag of the Parthenopean Republic, a French-supported republic in Naples
Communist: Based on the coat of arms of the Campania region (Naples is its capital)
Fascist: flag of Naples under Joseph Bonaparte

All based on the traditional Pisan cross of the city.

Monarchy / Default: traditional flag of the region
Republic/Communist/Fascist: based on designs for flags of Italy, as the House of Savoy went on to unify Italy.

All based on flag of the city, except Republic, which is taken from Tuscany (which Siena is located within)

Monarchy, Default, Fascist: based on the city's coat of arms
Republic: Urbino coat of arms, combined with red-white element from Pesaro, capital of Urbino's region
    Communist: Red-white element isolated

  4. #4
    Holy Roman Empire - Download

Following not included due to presence in V2:
Anhalt, Baden, Bavaria, Brunswick (as Braunschweig), Bohemia, Bremen, Frankfurt, Austria, Hamburg, Hannover, Hessen (as either Hesse-Darmstadt or Hesse-Kassel), Oldenburg, Mecklenburg,
    Saxony, Wurttemberg, and Schweiz (Switzerland).

Various speculations largely based on German designs

Monarchy: based on the city's traditional coat-of-arms
Default: flag of the city as part of the HRE
Republic: coat of arms of the modern city
    Fascist/Communist: based on these flags

Built a number of flags based on the city's coat of arms and the original flag in EU3.

All based upon the city's coat of arms or modern flags

An easy one, this: just took the old COA, the new COA, and the two styles of flags the region has had, and mixed. The preview shows a black line in the default flag; this is not present in the file.

Monarchy: flag of the Duchy of Cleves while ruled by the House of La Marck
Default: modern flag of Rhine-Westphalia with the Duchy of Cleves coat of arms defacing
Republic: Modern Coat of arms of Kleve, over triband
Communist, Fascist: based on Paradox designs for the Netherlands (Kleves is heavily Dutch-influenced)

All based on the traditional flag of Cologne, save the Republic (the modern COA)

Monarchy: coat of arms of Saxe-Lauenburg defacing the duchy's flag
Default: based on the Saxon portion of the COA
Republic: democracy flag defaced with Ratzeburg's COA (capitol of the region)
    Communist: based on default flag

All based on the region's flags, some mirroring the Alsace flags from the French set. The communist is an adjusted flag of a short-lived Soviet Republic of Alsace-Lorraine.

All based on COAs/Flags of the city. The fascist flag features a logo that's on the city's manhole covers; seems like something that would be taken over by a "nationalist" group.

Based on the city's coat of arms and flag.

Based on the city's coats of arms and flag.

Based on the city's coat of arms and flag.

Monarchy: Flag of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster
Default/Republic: triband based on COA of the city of Münster
    Communist: based on the monarchy
Fascist: Seal from Monarchy, over Kingdom of Germany flag

    Monarchy: flag of Electoral Palatinate
Default: flag of modern Rhineland-Palatinate region
Republic: flag of the region instead with the COA of the Palatinate defacing
Fascist: COA of Palatinate over bars colored from Monarchy flag
Communist: background of Fascist flag quartering red field

    Monarchy: Pomeranian Griffon
Republic: flag of Western (German) Pomerania
Default: Flag of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (German state containing western Pomerania)
    Communist: based on Republic flag
Fascist: colors from Default, griffon from Monarchy

    Monarchy: COA of Silesia
Default: Flag of Wroclaw, capital of Silesia
Republic: Stylized COA of Wroclaw with Silesian eagle
Communist: Based on COA of Wroclaw under communist rule
Fascist: Based on COA of Wroclaw under Nazi Germany

All based on city's traditional flag

All based on region's flag and/or COA, except Monarchy, which is based on the Duchy of Carinthia, which Styria separated from (slightly anachronistic)

All based on the city's COA (original or modern)

Based on various coats of arms of Tyrol (region is divided between Austria and Italy today)

Monarchy: City's flag, defaced with its COA to distinguish it from Genoa and England
Default: based on the region's COA.
Republic, Communist: based on the Default
    Fascist: based on monarchy flag

All based on flag of Ulm or New Ulm. Castle from New Ulm placed on Monarchy flag to distinguish from Ferrara

    Monarchy: flag of Franconia (region)
Default: Stylized version of modern city's COA
Republic: default flag defaced with COA of Middle Franconia
    Communist: based on Default
    Fascist: COA of Middle Franconia

Flags based either on traditional Westphalia flag/COA or modern state flag.

That's really excellent, I look forward to using this in a converted EU3 to VIC2 game!

In response to a PM from a mod maker, I've added blanket permission to authors to use these flags in mods (the flags I've made, at least).

Next in progress is Scandanvia (1 flag) and the Balkans.

Scandinavia and the Balkans - Download

The following nations from these sections already exist in V2:
Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Holstein, Scandinavia

The following nation should be converted to the latter:
    Corfu to Ionina Islands

Monarchy: Flags of the Duchy of Achaia
Default, Republic, Communist: Based on the coat of arms of the offshoot Savoian house that founded said Duchy
Fascist: monarchy flag with Lybros (symbol of some Greek nationalist movements around the early 20th c.)

All based on one of Athens' flags or its coat of arms

Monarchy: Coat of arms of the Byzantine ruling house (Epirus was largely a Byz successor state)
Default: Homage to the Byzantine flag, with Greek national colors
Republic: Flag of a short-lived Epiran republic
Communist: Flag of Albania, colors changed to match the Monarchy flag, star added.
    Fascist: black-ized republic flag

Monarchy: EU3 flag of the Knights (Maltese cross on red field)
Default: Flag of the Sovereign Knights of Malta (red darkened slightly to distinguish from Savoy)
Republic: Flag of the Republic of Malta
    Communist: Republic flag modified
Fascist: Shield of the Knights Hospitalier

Monarchy: Byzantine eagle (Morea was another Byz successor)
Default: Flag of the Greek Revolution with the Morean monarchy flag in the canton
Republic: Very anachronistic and speculative flag featuring symbology of the four different rulers of Morea
    Communist/Fascist: Speculative

All based on Duchy of Naxos coat of arms

Default/Republic: Based on Republic of Ragusan coat of arms
Monarchy: flag of Ragusa (not tecnicaly a monarchy flag)
    Communist: modified republic flag
Fascist: Coat of arms of Ragusa while part of the Austrian Empire

All based on coat of arms; fascist symbol one of Romanian nationalism.

Why do some of the communist variants include a cross, either standard or St. Andrew's?
Most supporters of the Oslo Accords insisted that this agreement would solve all existing problems.

I'm wondering the same thing. Will this be made part of the converter? If so, will the converter automatically add missing country tags too?

    Anyway, looks great!

A few reasons, depending on the nation:
    1. I just didn't think about it, and I'll change it;
    2. The cross is so much more a part of the national symbology rather than a symbol of christianity, that I felt it still fit;
    3. In the case of Alsace and Lorraine, the Cross of Lorraine was used on the flag of a Socialist movement, so it is actually historical.

I'm not part of the converter team, but here's how I've been operating prior to creating this pack:

    1. Finish an EU3 game, convert it.
    2. Look to see what nations didn't make it across.
    3. Make their flags, then make a file for them in /countries/, by editing a copy of an existing country with compatible cultural background
    4. Add their country code to countries.txt and their name and adjective to a localization file
    5. Add a line to the converter's country_mappings.txt file.

Theoretically, when I'm done with the flagpack, what I'll do is go ahead and make text files for all the countries as well as a localization file that can be copied into your own folders, and then I'll create a couple more files with text that can be added to countries.txt and country_mappings.txt to make them all convert directly.

    Next pack is incoming shortly.

Britain, Ireland, Eastern Europe - download
This pack includes all nations under the #British Isles and #Eastern Europe sections of the EU3 countries.txt file, except for those that already exist in Vicky 2.

    Ireland:
For the Irish kingdoms I tried to follow a little bit of a general theme, because it's rather rare for more than one of them to exist to the end of an EU3 game without forming Ireland:
-The Monarchy flag is the traditional flag of the kingdom/province.
-The communist flag is the symbol of the Irish Communist Party with 1 or two color bars based on the kingdom's flag(s)
-The fascist flag is some variation on the flag used by the Blueshirts
-Republic and Democracy flags are either a slight variation on the kingdom flag of something else (denoted below where needed).

Republic - Abstract representation of the coat of arms of County Galway, the largest in Connacht; the five stars conveniently represent the five counties within Connacht

Gold bars added to Default largely to distinguish from the green Ireland flag, just in case.

Republic is the flag and coat of arms of the city of Cork, the largest city in Munster.

    Britain

Monarchy: adaptation of the coat of arms of the Earldom of Cornwall
    Default: Traditional flag of Cornwall
Republic: Theoretical flag combining those of Cornwall and Devonshire
    Communist/Fascist: based on default

Monarchy: Coat of arms of the House of Lannister, er, Lancaster
Default: Current flag of Lancashire, featuring the Plantagenet rose
Republic: Based on coat of arms of Lancashire

Monarchy: Based on coat of arms of the House of Percy, early dukes of Northumbria
Default: Flag of the Kingdom of Northumbria
    Republic: Modern flag of Northumberland

Monarchy: Coat of the House of York
    Default: Modern flag of Yorkshire
Republic: From coat of arms of Yorkshire

England and Wales use flags from chandlerw1's Symbols Flagpack.

    Eastern Europe
The following nations already exist in V2:
    Danzig, Krakow, Lithuania, Poland, Prussia.

It is recommended to convert Riga to Latvia.

    (Livonian Order in EU3)
All based on some combination of the Teutonic Order's traditional cross, and the Livonian Order's red cross (and I just realized that I used the wrong cross on two them; I'll try to fix that in the near future).

Monarchy: Courland flag from Empire: Total War
Default: Flag of the Kurland region; red darkened slightly (using Latvia's red) to distinguish from one of the Hesses
Republic: Default flag with a roundel from the monarchy flag

The monarchy flag of Courland is slightly messy, and it may be more appropriate to use the default flag as the monarchy flag since that was the flag flown by the Duchy of Courland, as per Wikipedia.

However, you may want to consider merging Courland and Latvia into a single flagset since only Courland exists in EU3 while only Latvia exists in Victoria 2. I've never used the converter, but it's also possible that it considers them the same country (occupying the same approximate territory and the latter essentially being the successor to the former.)

Yeah, the flag's a mess since it's a direct copy of the one from E:TW, and they have dirt and waving graphics on them and such. I was curious to see how it would look once finished, but it didn't come out all that well. I'll either just replace it with the default or remake it using the coat of arms.

As to which nation turns into which, I chose Riga (also in EU3) to be the one that turns into Latvia, since it's the capital. I'm certainly open to discussions on that point, though.

The Wales Republic Flag would be more suitable as the Monarchy flag. For Republican Wales, put a leek on the flag.
For the Livonian Order Commie Flag, wouldn't the sword be better than the lion/bear/animal thingy?
Most supporters of the Oslo Accords insisted that this agreement would solve all existing problems.

The Irish minor's flags are very good, look quite historically plausible.

Good job. Just one thing about Orléanais, the Fleur-de-lis is the symbol of the French Monarchy not of the region. A republican or communist regime would probably remove it. The same thing applies to Burgundy. I can hardly imagine a communist governement keeping the old symbol of the king on the flag just for the sake a regional identity and tradition.

I think I do agree with you on those points; I'll definitely consider modifying those once I'm through with the entirety of the pack. Burgundy was one of the first flags I made, so I wasn't thinking all that much about things like that.

Wales I simply took from Chandlerw1's flagpack to avoid duplicating existing work; I might do them on my own once I have the entire pack done, though. As to Livonia, I'll probably make that change when I do a revision pass.

Beginning work on the next batch... Spain and Low Countries. (The Colonies seciton will not need to be done as all of those countries are already in V2.)
