I still can't see how any Argentinian government could ever pose a threat to us. No other South American nation have the power to even dream of defeating us. Chile is the Great Power of our Continent. Our soldiers just had to fight another Civil War. Give them a break. We have no need to invade a nation that pose no threat to us. Let the soldiers rest so they fight in full strength when we do meet a real threat, probably from inside our own nation considering the trends.

The Chilean Germanista movement is dead, what's left of it fled to Argentina. Neither the Argentinian nor the Chilean Germanistas can do anything to threaten our nation. Just another right wing illusion. What we should do instead of waging wars everywhere is finally give our soldiers and workers pensions. That should be the focus for the next administration.

Senor, I believe you underestimate our armed forces. My men are as well as ever, and are more than ready for whatever comes their way. They could march a hundred miles in a day if they had to.

To any anti-war Socialista general:

If you so violently oppose war I would be more than happy to take command of your forces. I can manage the economy with our relaxed policies while I inspire confidence in our young men. Think about the proposition.... We wouldn't want any of you to compromise your flawed ideologies.

Oh! And I vote for Senor Ferrari for COS!

Colonel Juan Rivera was making his way to Santiago by train. As the beautiful Chilean countryside sped by, he asked himself how such a beautiful country could have so much darkness in it. He had spent his whole career in the Army, following in his father's footsteps, and other than the war with Argentina had spent most of it fighting fellow Chileans. Why did politics in Chile demand the constant sacrifice of its own soldiers? He believed the Army was not the plaything of scheming politicians, but a professional force dedicated to defending Chile from its enemies, and was disgusted with what it had become.

When he arrived at La Moneda, he was led to the President's Office. As he entered he saw his father was alone, sitting behind his desk with a large Cuban cigar in his right hand. "Son, it is so good to see you. I needed to talk to someone I can trust." As he motioned for Juan to take a seat he continued "Chile is in danger and dark forces are rising in our Republic. Unfortunately, I no longer have the energy or fire to continue on as much as I know that it is needed." "It is now up to you and the few honourable men left in the Congresso and military to do what is called for to save Chile. . . ."

Name: Col. Juan Rivera
Born: 1858
Bio: Son of President Rivera. He has spent his career as an officer in the Army. He currently serves in the Grand Army of the Republic under the command of Gen. de Conti.

I welcome the honorable Colonel Rivera into Chile. I am sure our interests intersect at a crucial juncture in the near future, and I hope we can serve together as military men one day.

Colonel de Porto.

Welcome, Colonel Rivera. For all of the transgressions of your father, you seem to be a man with ambition and conviction.

That, I can relate to and respect.

Senator Alejandro Ruiz de Escovedo

Come, then. Let us get down to business. It is the duty of we legislators to vote upon bills, and I encourage all of the supporters to vote for my Declaration of Intent against the Germanist Argentinian Government.

We must conquer Argentina, now is the time.

Here's an update. There will probably be a Chief of Staff runoff and a snap vote on war with Argentina tomorrow.

President:
De Conti ((Syriana)): 13
Gogołów ((Dyranum)): 4

Chief of Staff:
Rios ((rudders10)): 6
Juan De Porto ((zagoroth)): 3
Christiano Ferarri ((King50000)): 5
Abstain: 1

Members of Congreso,

It has been said that the rebels in Argentina pose no threat to the integrity of our nation. But the men who control Argentina are Chileans; it is only natural that, one day, they should seek to exploit the apparatus of state to assert their rule over Chile. Pre-emptive action is necessary to safeguard the Republic from invasion and rebellion. If we tolerate the rebel regime in Buenos Aires, then no nation is safe from political infiltration. The rebels honour no treaties, and do not respect the sovereignty of other nations; they are a rogue element in foreign affairs, dedicated to engineering chaos and catastrophe in our peaceful continent. A network of malice shall spread across the continent, until we find ourselves encircled by hostile regimes, all desirous of the destruction of the Republic.

It is not just for the sake of the Republic that we fight. It is also for the sake of the Argentine people. We owe a duty to these men and women to free them from the auspices of a tyranny of Chilean origin. It was from Chile that these rebels invaded Argentina, ravaging the countryside as they went, before toppling the government and installing their dictatorship. Argentina suffers under an imposed regime, just as Chile once did in 1814. It was from Argentina that General José de San Martín lead the Army of the Andes to liberate Chile from Spanish control. Let us now return this favour. We shall drive out the despicable regime and readmit Argentina into the commonwealth of nations. The South American union shall live again, undisturbed by unrest and discord.

But I also have my concerns, which are purely practical. The Chilean Army has been reduced in recent days due to the aftermath of the Schmidt affair. The rebellious Army of Peru-Bolivia has been utterly annihilated; the Army of Northern Chile, badly mauled. Even the Grand Army of the Republic incurred casualties when I lead it to aid General Rios at the Battle of Arica. It would be unwise to embark on war with only two armies at full operational strength. Surely we all recall the disastrous outcome of the War of 1881, which has served as a testament to the folly of war without adequate preparation?

I fully support an immediate vote in Congreso on whether the Republic shall declare war on Argentina. But I suggest that we defer the actual declaration of war until such a point when our armies have been restored to their pre-coup conditions. We must marshal our strength before we bring it down upon the rebels. We must ensure that our military is at the peak of its powers before we deploy it against the regime in Buenos Aires. We must guarantee our success before we embark on this campaign. A failure to prepare in peace invites a failure to succeed in war.

As a great general once wrote, "Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win."

- General Charles Maximilien, Prince de Conti

Sr. De Conti captures the essence of our need for the conquest of argentina. It is time that we found a cause to unite behind as a people. So please, join the next president of Chile in supporting my bill of war against the illegitimate Government currently strangling the brave people of Argentina.

As pertains to the readiness of the army, however, I cannot concur. My good friend General Hidalgo has his forces ready, and he borders Argentina with 18 brigades. Argentina's weak army could not hope to even slow this force.

I hold it to be true that the longer we wait, the more Chilean soldiers we lead to death or injury. We cannot allow the Germanistas to raise any formidable defense!

The time to act is now.

I propose that the allegations against Senor de Escovedo be dismissed, they are ridiculous and I believe that Presidente Rivera may be suffering from mental fatigue.

~ Senator Ernesto F. Fuentes

I obviously agree with Senor Fuentes, and support and solidarity has been on an exponential rise regarding my plight. I believe that at this point, the allegations of Rivera and his single crony are no longer relevant.

A vote on war is forthcoming; during this time, I urge all supporters of war with Argentina to make their voice heard! There are only positive connotations attached to an invasion of Argentinian lands to restore Government and Democracy. We must not allow the Chilean traitors currently in control of Argentine affairs to return to our lands and stir up havoc.

The time has never been better; the longer we wait, the more troops there will be to meet us. As the situation stands now, resistance would be futile as our soldiers stalked the land. My dear friend General Sebastian Hidalgo and his Army of Patagonia are ready for the fray. They border Argentinian lands, and will be an unstoppable force.

We will be greeted with open arms and the utmost in joy, and we will sustain limited casualties. But only if we move now.

Senator Alejandro Ruiz de Escovedo

"As stated before, I approve Senor Escovedo's motion. Wars are not won by timidity, and unless we act now we risk suffering excessive casualties would could be avoided by intervening now."

Severiano Miramontes

Senor, I believe you underestimate our armed forces. My men are as well as ever, and are more than ready for whatever comes their way. They could march a hundred miles in a day if they had to.

Well I could walk 500 miles and I could walk 500 more but I doubt our armies could walk 100 miles in one day.

Despite my distaste for senor Escovedo, I agree with his motion for war with Argentina. The Germanistas must be wiped out.

A Declaration of Intent Regarding Argentina:
Be It Resolved That:

-The harmful Germanistas must not have power in South America, and Chilean initiative must stem their current hold on Argentina;

-It is desirable to have the current territories of Argentina under our rule, and this can only be accomplished through military means;

-Thus, war must be declared on Argentina for the good of her people and for the safety of ours from Germanista influence;

-Any territory acquired during the course of said conflict is to be annexed as a National province, and the Argentinian people made citizens as soon as possible.

Player Actions Needed:
By my count, Charles Maximilien de Conti ((Syriana)) is the next President of the Republic. Meanwhile, the Chief of Staff race is in a runoff. Juan De Porto ((zagoroth)) has been dropped from the race. Those who voted for him are now counted as abstaining and should feel free to vote for one of the two remaining candidates.

We're additionally holding a snap vote on a declaration of intent (war) with Argentina, as stated above.

A sample ballot would look like this:
Chief of Staff: Rios/Ferrari ((If you haven't previously voted or voted for Porto))
War with Argentina: Yes/No/Abstain

Note that war with Argentina will probably result in the seizure of Chaco and Jujuy, not the annexation of Argentina.

This poll will end tomorrow, at 10:00 AM PST on the 23nd (two days).

EDIT: Syriana, I suggest you use this time to get a cabinet together, though you'll obviously have to wait for the final word on the Chief of Staff for your general appointments.

Congratulations President De Conti, I hope we have the chance to work together soon.

General Rios

War with Argentina: No

I vote no on a war with Argentina; if we want to ensure that nation is aligned to us, and more importantly the people, we must act as a friend and comrade, not as an invader and tyrant,

As well, I have decided to switch my vote from Ferrari to Rios, whom I believe will be more stern in opposing a war than Senor Ferrari would otherwise be.
