You have not a shred of morality to cling to, Senor. Your conduct in this campaign is evidence enough of that. You pay pandering service to the Catholic Church in order to ensnare their voters, yet when the Church comes forward with a proposal for poverty relief, you slander this as Socialism. You seek to harvest the Christian vote without having to follow Christian principles. You brandish your faith as a woman flaunts a fur coat; you wear your faith on your chest, but not in your heart.

It is exactly to spur the impoverished classes onto to self-sufficiency that I make my proposal. I do not propose to give a hand-out, but a hand up. I propose to uplift those in poverty, not drag down those in affluence. The latter is Communism; the former is Christianity. This small investment will reap mass dividends for the nation. Employment will rise as the impoverished are returned to the workplace; crime rates will fall, as this is the profession to which the impoverished turn to; and the economic wellbeing of the nation will be secured. What little we invest shall be returned as the economy flourishes. It is a sensible and prudnt policy, supported by the Church and by classical economic theory. It is hardly the stuff of Socialism, which enjoys the support of neither.

If you are so confident of victory, Senor, why do you now appeal to racism to save yourself? If you are so certain that the Partido Republicano can only be lead to victory under your candidacy, why do you seek to have me disqualified before the convention has even concluded? Indeed, it seems strange that a conservative statesmen would reach for the arguments of the radicals. But you are no statesman. You are a hapless political conjuror, reaching for trick after trick to appease your audience, even as the whole show comes crashing down upon you.

Dear Senor;

I encourage you to vote in our primary. We have unfortunately not had a single vote cast because of inefficient campaigning and attacks by men who claim to be of the same party. I have outlined my own platform several times, and will do so again for the benefit of everyone:

My candidacy is one of National pride, and the Chilean people are my first interest. Specifically, the military prowess and consequent security advantages of our nation are my first priority. I would immediately ensure that our military is the finest and one of the largest in the world.

Fiscally, I would demand significantly lower taxes on every last strata to ensure that our economy grows only larger. When every Chilean can prosper and purchase to satisfy his wants and needs, we will be infallible.

Religiously, I support a strong moralist stance. Chile is a Catholic country, and we must unite our minorities by the banner of Catholicism. Many of us are Catholic, and thus this is what we should be identified with.

These are my main issues, but I have many more firm and principled stances.

Additionally, I will be distancing myself from the attacks levied by Maximilien, and no longer releasing attacks myself.

Senator Alejandro Ruiz de Escovedo, Presidential Candidate for the Republicanos

The fact that no votes have been cast probalby has more to do with the fact that voting has not yet started Senor.

The 1896 Primaries: Autumn For Chile

President Rivera shocked the Chilean political world with his surprise announcement that he would not seek re-election. The aging Rivera declared in a public address before an assembled crowd of his supporters that he wished to spend more time with family; the papers widely speculated that either his health or his electability had become a significant obstacle to his retention of the highest office in Chile. Candidates quickly swarmed in to fill the unexpected void left by the departing president; the highly dynastic traditions of Chilean politics meant that while shifts in the ruling party were frequent, incumbents were overwhelming likely to secure victory after victory until term-limited out. No one had foreseen Rivera's acceptance of early retirement. All bets were off, as Chile's remaining four co-equal parties seemed to have secured roughly equal footing in the general electorate.

Sérgio Gogołów, former President and freshly retired minister, was the first to throw his hat into the ring. Unopposed in the FNT's pre-electoral process, Gogołów once again entered the race with the full backing of the socialist political elite. His announcement was made amongst cheering crowds of craftsmen and unionists in Santiago as he promised to finish the work he had left undone five years previously. By contrast, the further left Comunista politburo could not find a suitable candidate to bear the revolutionary flag for the next election. With most of the organization in either prison cells or their graves and a continued government crackdown on their militant supporters, the Comunistas decided to nominate no Presidential candidate, though they remained active in the legislature and local elections.

The Republicano field was the most heavily contested. With no obvious successors to the outgoing President Rivera, three frontrunners emerged from a crowd in the self-described conservative-center field: the liberal Francisco de Santa Rosa, more right-wing standby Charles Maximilien de Conti, and hard-dealing dark horse newcomer Alejandro Ruiz de Escovedo. The three planned a series of debates across the country as well as independent whistle-stop train tours up and down Chile.

The Patriotas remained deeply internally divided, but with heavy support from the church and traditionalist base, Caitan Crazzio and Ernesto Fernando Fuentes separated from the rest of the flock as the conservative right-wing frontrunners. The pair cooperated less than their Republicano counterparts, independently touring the country's chapels and military bases to shore up support for their own campaigns.

The Liberales had disappeared quietly. They never held an official notice of disbandment; rather no one appeared at their convention. They had simply ceased to be.

The wake of the revolutionary Comunista defeats left more than just an electoral legacy. In addition to passing the National Defense Authorization Act, which forced all militia members to take an oath of loyalty to Chile or be declared criminals, the Congreso heard the case of former Chief of Staff Dio Guerrero, who had declared his allegiance for the revolutionaries during the last coup. The arguments over his case were particularly fierce in the Senate, where he was tried. Though most agreed that he should be found guilty of some crime, the moderates joined with the far left to defeat right-wing attempts to convict him of treason against the Republic or conspiracy to commit rebellion when no evidence of his prior knowledge of the uprising was found. He was also narrowly cleared of conspiracy to commit murder, much to the chagrin of the right. However, left-wing attempts to acquit him outright also failed. Eventually, the Congreso reached a compromise. Dio Guerrero was found guilty of dereliction of duty, insubordination, and consorting with known enemies of the Republic. His sentence, also brokered between the left and right, was ten years in prison in minimum security but with no chance of early parole.

Guerrero himself would remain politically active during his time in prison, often corresponding with colleagues from the military or other high-profile contacts. However, he was no long Chief of Staff by any stretch of the imagination, and a flood of candidates from the armed forces scrambled to try to replace him.

-------------------------
The Right to Serve Act:
1. Any man who's a Chilean citizen and is physically and mentally fit to serve in the Chilean military have the right to do so.
2. It's not allowed to expel a soldier from the military due to his religious or political views or his ethnicity.
3. A soldier can only be expelled from the military if he has committed a crime, if he has committed treason or insubordination, or if he in any other way has become physically or mentally unfit to serve.
4. A soldier cannot be expelled from the armed forces on the charge of a crime, insubordination or treason without proof or witnesses that the soldier in question is guilty to the allegations he has been accused of.

The Chief of Staff Empowerment Bill

1. For any permanent reallocation of soldiers, the President must have the approval of the CoS.

This bill aims to increase the power of the CoS and prevent predicaments such as those which led to this violent altercation by forcing the President to consult the CoS for troop reallocations. Currently, the President is only required to consult the CoS at the start of his term, which vastly undermines the power of the CoS.

MILITARY COMMAND ACT
The focus of theis is to ensure that there is a split between the military and government. The points of the ACT are below
1. Any General who wishes to run for Presidency should immediately resign his command.
2. If unsuccessful for the Presidency the General is not allowed to revert to command of an army until and unless he is reinstated to that post by the incoming President.

Player Actions Needed:
As always, let me know if I've screwed something up or missed someone's candidacy. PM me missing your platform if I'm missing it.

You get the picture. Vote for your favorite candidate, ect., ect. Now, there are a few Comunistas off the leash who don't have candidates to vote for, but you can still vote for a coalition candidate... even though you have no candidate of your own.

As a reminder, AGITATORS ARE DISENFRANCHISED AND CANNOT RUN FOR OFFICE OR VOTE!

Here's some sample ballots below.

Party: Republicanos
Candidate: Abstain
Coalition: With FNT/With Patriotas/With more than one/No Coalition/Abstain
Coalition Candidate: Abstain
Right To Serve Act: Yes/No/Abstain
Chief of Staff Empowerment Bill: Yes/No/Abstain
Military Command Act: Yes/No/Abstain

Party: Comunistas
Coalition: With FNT/With Patriotas/With Republicanos
Coalition Candidate: Abstain
Right To Serve Act: Yes/No/Abstain
Chief of Staff Empowerment Bill: Yes/No/Abstain
Military Command Act: Yes/No/Abstain

Since we're back to coalition voting, candidates can vote. We're voting on Chief of Staff later.

EDIT: Last minute vote from Zzzzz... acquitted Dio Guerrero, so Rogov - you're not longer disenfranchised. You can vote again.

I'll give this two days to vote, ending 10 AM PST (6 PM GMT, I believe) on the 20th. I may cut it short if we get enough votes in quickly (25 or more by two days from now), as unlikely as that now seems.

President Rivera's Convention Address

Fellow Republicanos, we have many fine candidates running for President. But I speak to you today to endorse General de Conti for Presidente. He has served Chile for many years honourably in the Army defending the Republic always. He is the best candidate to represent the Republicanos and continue advancing Chile's prosperity and strength. I urge all Republicanos to rally behind de Conti. I wish to thank all of you for your support of my administration and hope we can stay united and continue Republicano rule of Chile. Our country is prospering as never before but we still face many challenges. General de Conti is the man to face those challenges.

Although I shall not vote in this election I am beginning to think that perhaps De Conti would best suit the nation at this time.
