Err, I mean no disrespect to Santa Rosa, I actually respect him much more than most Republicanos due to his bipartisanship and his leadership of the republic but......don't you think he may be a bit old for the position?

((Maybe elderly, heroic (i.e. Hero of the Republic), or some quite possibly uncommonly young...))

I thank you for your kind words, Senor Juarez, but I do believe that this position is largely an honourary, and get-out-of-my-hair, position. The Canal Zone has, thus far, been fairly well run (even with, to use Weismuellers phraseology, 'Germanista'), so I believe that all I'll have to do is manage some supply issues, resolve petty disputes (something I've managed fairly well to do), and build up more defences.

Roberto Matta, chilean cardinal and former archbishop of Santiago, dies at the age of 75.

While his succesor has not yet been determined by the Holy See, a prominent bishop is made everyday more notorious by his approach to politics (something unusual for Chilean politics). The Holy See is considering appointing him for the position of Archbishop of Santiago, the single most powerful ecclesiastical position in Chile. While during the colonial era the archbishop had notorious influence and power, the times of the republic had seen the archbishops' power decay. It was a rather different man, this bishop of Valparaiso, who was often seen having dinner with big shot politicians and CEOs. The Holy See had a special interest in Chile, and felt it's chilean flock was drifting away from God and instead was getting atheist and socialist with the years.

The ecclesiastical authority in charge of appointing the new archbishop of Chile was contemplating this man's file:

    Name: Jaime Fernandez
    Occupation: Bishop of Valparaiso
Background: Born of a middle class family, he is of common birth and is very ambitious.

    Character: Father Diego Zarenta
    Born: 1856
    Party: Independent

Bio: Father Zarenta was born into a middle class family of Chilean farmers. As a boy he had endless questions about god and participated wholeheartedly in the services. When both of his parents were killed during the Second Civil War, the church took him in. He was a fighter against corruption within the church, and after he served as an army chaplain during the Chilean-Argenten war, and again in the civil war, he became a devout pacifist. He took no sides, helping all solders regardless of their affiliation, and earned a reputation for bravery and kindness. He has little interest in politics, although he dislikes the Communistas for their attacks on the church. His flock know him as a quiet, kind, loving man, who has his own interpretation of the Bible.

(Im really pissed, I was writing a story and when I clicked backspace it turned the page back...)

Basically, guy gets up to a scene much like his dream. 11 other people join him...

"The battle is over. The Liberales have all but been exterminated. But the war is not finished. There are pockets of those who respect freedom still alive, we must find these pockets for the protection of the future of Chile"

a man speaks up, "Where to first"

"There is a small town on the outskirts of Antofogasta. A Widower, her son and daughter of 18 and 24. The father died in the Revolution, we must get to these people first. The lady looks to petition for a new Liberalism, devoid of the radicalism of the past"

"We must make haste, before others of different designs reach them first".

((I think part of our problem with getting social reforms is that we put through too many political reforms. Since the pops have the political reforms they want, they will be losing militancy from them. Left unfilled but enabled, they would have made it easier for social reform.

Alternatively we could declare war on Sokoto and make outrageous demands before caving in with a white peace.))

See, this is what the Directory plotters didn't tell you about and maybe didn't know about, but even besides one's own initial demands for reform changes when one stages a coup, once the coup is finished and the new gov is in place, you are stuck with the lower house that is closest to your ideology. So, when Cesar didn't go more democratic with the Empire in the initial phase when he could have set whatever he wanted, it made it impossible to pass political reforms later the normal non-coup way as we had installed all these imperial croney NPC's during our revolution that were all hardline reactionary, blocking all reforms.

So, the directorate coup would have installed an anarcho-liberal lower house that would have prevented social reforms from getting through even if the regular house pre-coup had allowed them. ))
That was the plan all along. Glad you figured it out

Might be tomorrow, might be the day after. AHD comes out tomorrow, and I'm going to tinker around with the notion of converting before I update again. Until then, feel free to continue stating policies/intentions for the coming term. I still don't know what you all intend to do.

(And they accuse Liberales of political packing...)

The makeshift band happens upon a horse buggy winding down the road. They step in front and wave the driver. He steps up to the drive, pulling our his pistol, "You will take us to Antofogasta,at once". The men look wearily at their rag-tag leader, but put on brave faces

The driver dumfounded had nothing to do but let them on. He had foolishly believed the war was over.
