As General of the Army of the South, I declare myself for the government (against the coup). Though I respect Andonie and his wishes to keep Chile free from socialists and communists, I do not believe that they should be abolished completely and a dictatorship put in place of our great Republic. I have said it before, and I shall say it again, I will always stand by the great Republic.

((I made it as the banner/coat of arms of the Free Chilean Navy during the Imperial coup to avoid confusion between two groups using the Chilean flag [before the Imperialistas started working on their own flag designs] and to represent Alvarez' part in the republicano agitation [before the Republicanos sort of organized and worked with one common voice]. It carried on into the Chilean navy after the coup, I guess - I use it mostly for "official" navy proclamations mostly if my character is admiral [which means, almost always, responding to a coup]. It's designed off several logos used by the OTL Chilean Navy.))
For all those of you who, like me, haven't checked the thread for a few hours, it seems that President Carlos Andonie has declared a coup!

Carlos Andonie ((rudders10)) has declared a coup to halt elections and install a Bourgeois Dictatorship with himself as the head of government. Ministers and Generals need to pick a side. In concordance with precedent, despite his character's death Romano will still command the Treasury's vote. ((rudders10, the President only votes for ministries that he has deliberately left vacant, as in Roseno's coup of 1856)). Please declare yourselves FOR THE COUP or FOR THE REPUBLIC. I will note those individuals who have already chosen a side.
Please continue voting on the Presidential election, though it will be moot if Andonie succeeds in halting elections by force.

I don't know what to do. Me and my father have tried to defend democracy against tyrants and oppression. But now a man who would destroy the free market, with all the innovation and opportunity it brings, has a good chance of being elected. We've had so many greedy men try to take power. I've fought against these men for so long. I've fought in the name of an elected government. But I've lost my faith in our system. Politicians look for every opportunity to turn the congresso into a bunch of squabbling, ideologically obsessed morons. I've lost my faith in democracy. It turns good men into greedy men scrambling for the votes of idiots. I am a fighter of radicalism. I will work to prevent it in this new government. I am for the coup. I am ashamed to turn my back on the democracy that my father died for, but now I don't think it was really worth dying for.

I have no intention of being another Cesar. And Indeed I intend to step down early and let the council vote to replace me. I am only leading this to see it through its initial teething times. There is no change to people voting, indeed i want to extens the franchise. All i am doing is changing the way we vote to one where the people are better represented not dominated by parties and their ideologies. I include the liberals in this.
This will be a society where all offices are elcted, no more croyism, no more deals, just pure simple democracy. If that scares you then that is because you are afraid of democracy and want to hold onto the days of backroom deals, the very deals you criticized.
Andonie is the worst kind of tyrant, one that only work for himself. This isn't a coup for Chile, but a coup for himself and his ego. He couldn't handle the Liberales allying with the Left and only couped because he see himself as the saviour of the Liberales who will turn them back to the path of stomping on the working class. I say this again: all Chileans, Socialists, Communists, Liberals and Conservatives! Reject this man! He stand for an outdated unfair economic system no one in Chile want anymore.

Senor, I would look to include all people in the franchise. I am not anti democracy, just anti parties. I have looked in the mirror and know that I was responsible as any for this. As I said in my address, I participated in these deals, I was a past master at it and always thought I was doing what was right for Chile. But we should not have a system that allows this to happen. It perverts democracy and when I realised this I knew a change had to be made. The resistance to this will come no doubt from those with the strongest party discipline as they have the most to lose. They will lose the ability to force their members to their own will and will not like it. But this change will come, now or later and Chile will be a better place for it.

All I can say is that I hope the congresso and the respected military view me for what I have done and am trying to do, not for any personal view either good nor bad they may have about me. I am no Santa Rosa (who I respect and call a friend) who seeks to be loved, I just want to be respected for my desire to make Chile a great country, greater than she even is now. Personal feeling aside, can anyone say Chile now is not better off than 10 years ago when I took power. Regardless of this though Chile is too imp[ortant to let personal feeling get in the way of building this country and while this may be unpopular for some, it is necassary.

It is not necessary. It is treason. It is simple treason. Since no party wanted to promote the shameless greedy capitalism you endorsed anymore, and for good reasons, you decided that you and a small group of your rich friends are better suited to rule Chile than the people of Chile. This is treason. All Chileans, Liberals, Socialists, Communists and Conservatives need to unite against this mad man. Don't let him destroy our republic!

As my character deceased I intend to keep it that way and so I ask that you "auto" abstain the vote or let Andonie do what he wants with it. It wouldnt make sense for a deceased character to vote, and as my new character is not in that office, it doesent make sense for him to vote. So to avoid any IC action I ask you OOC to just abstain it, meaning like w/e, sincem y character is dead, or let Andonie do what he wants.))

((We had the same argument over the Navy and the deceased Admiral Alvarez. It boiled down to: it is still your choice. The Ministry encompasses more than just your character, so it is quite easy to make them do something.))

Sometimes it is necassary to make the hard decisions Senor. Something you are probably not accustomed to never having to make any decisions of any consequence. I do this not for me, not out of desire to cling to power, indeed I have already stated I will resign midway through the term, but rather from an attempt to restore true democracy, not the sham that you would impose on us or the broken system we are already using. I do not excpect you to ever agree with me, that is your view and you are entitled to it. When this coup is over and the new Revolutionary council is in place I can again state that there will be an amnesty for anyone who agitates or has taken arms against us.
I would also state that I am open to representation from people from all the current parties iin the new Council. Bar the Leader and the Minister of War which is currently occupied by Jose Aragon I hope to see a mix of people in the new council. I must say I cannot wait for the first elections when we will see true democracy with people free to run for whatever position they want.

We must continue our electoral action - it appears Andonie's coup will be defeated, and so we must gain at least three more votes for Comrade-Commander Renin and the Communista party. So please, vote if you have not already!
