And it would also allow the Frente Nacional to become the conservative party, rather than just another extremist party, and enter a coalition with the new party

It would be a wise choice.

I do not speak for all the liberals, only myself but am against any merging of the two parties. In doing this the wishes of each party get watered down and no one is happy. We are Liberales and pround of it and do not want to compromise on our beliefs.

"I wonder what the policies for the so-called 'Democratas Liberales' are?"

~ Daniel Palomino

I cannot say I am opposed to or supportive of the combination of the Republicanos and Liberales. We do have some similar positions, but on the other hand the differences between the two parties have been more than enough to bring a wedge between them in the past. Although, then again, the addition of more humble Republicanos could potentially balance out the almost snobbish feeling of aristocracy that the Liberales have been known to hang about themselves.

This requires much thought.

"Mr. Palomino, come look!"

A beaming young man, clothed in a golden blazer and dark purple khaki's, pulls Mr. Palomino towards the banner.

"See for yourself what our -I mean- his platforms are!"

It reads...

Hola mi amigos! I hope you are all faring well in this new republic! Here are my proposed platforms for the Democratas Liberales...

Laissez-Faire- Don't cage industrious Chileans, let them soar like eagles and profit from their enterprise. Some limited regulations must be maintained in order to protect the consumer, but let not this red tape stifle the economy. Above all, LOWER TAXES!

Free Market- Chile is an economic powerhouse, by being free market we can both attract foreign markets and increase our own living standards with foreign goods.

Moralism/Pluralism- Chile should be open to new ideas, but we should also be proud of who we are. Nationalism has been given a bad name and is too extreme a word, so I shall use the term "Patriotism" to describe what I'm going for here.

Pro-military/Neutral- Chile should be ready to defend itself but gone are the days of the nationalist war hawk. I personally would like to reclaim the lands held under nationalist rule but the cost is too great (in lives, money, and international prestige). Let the future be one of peace and goodwill towards all men in South America.

Full citizenship- We must continue to attract foreigners to our lands for they revitalize our economy, bolster our armed ranks, and (given time) can become patriotic citizens and productive members of society.

The Democratic Anarchists will be watching the democratic process with interest. Also, is this Crazzy new party not interesting? Led by a fascist, oh my. Their words are filled by lead I must say, it is that hard to understand them.

My beliefs are well known but for those who need reminding.

Laissez-Faire- The Government has no business running the economy. What do politicians know about how an economy works? Leave it to those who can work it best for the betterment of Chile.

Free Market- Free Trade benefits Chile and helps create jobs.

Secularism- While I have no problem with those who want to practise their religon, the state should keep oput of it. Look at the trouble the Church caused in the facist years.

Pro-military- Chile must maitain a strong military presence but only enough that is needed to deter intervention from the US or European powers. Anymore drains the country off skilled workers, money and manpower.

Full citizenship- Let us welcome all to Chiule for they shall improve the country with their skills.

I can assure you that this party is not led by Senior Crazzio. While I respect some of his views he is too closely aligned with the facists to play a significant role in the party, at least until he proves himself.

"I fear there is not one party I can connect myself to. I shall make immediate plans to create my own party, once I am fully able to. I will have to speak with THe Speaker to obtain more information on the matter."

"Look! Senor Andonie!"

Another man pushes the distinguished presidential candidate towards Crazzio's banner, where it reads...

PS. give me a way to prove myself and I shall! You want gold? I can fill your pockets!

I was refering to the Crazzy party (Undemocratic Unliberals) led by Caitan Crazzio, not the Liberales.

I remind everyone that the speaker has the say on party creation. However merging the parties might be convienient. It is true what you say; the liberales is a party lead by upper class old money aristocrats and the republicanos areessentially lead by selfmade generals and moralists. But that doesnt mean the union wouldn't work. In fact it would make the group stronger. I know the Frente Nacional has little support among the revolutionaries, hence why I am counting on the union of the liberales and republicanos to win the upcoming election so that we can keep radicals away from the government.

Meanwhile the Frente Nacional will remain true to their ideals and mark their precense in the congress with our essential opposition to the communist party and their attempts to seize the government or our property. We will make sure God and the nation are not forgotten amongst this mess of liberals and socialists, both secularist and unpatriotic.

Therefore I invite Caitan Crazzio back into the Frente Nacional. You are our prodigial son, once a leading party figure breaking labourist cells at both your steel factory and dissolving terrorist cells and now alienated by the leftist elements of the nation. You belong with us, moralist hawkish right wing politicians in the Frente Nacional, rather than alienated in a liberal party that doesnt trust you. Our economic policy has never been clear and it is not a good reason for you to abandon us and waste your potential in a party that wont run you as candidate or appoint you to anything.

*During the prominence of Alejandro, the Escovedo family had grown to become majorly influential, their power stretching from the ancestral home of Magallanes throughout Southern Chile. Since the murder of Alejandro, the house and its patriarch, Hernan Patricio de Escovedo, had maintained a silence in their grief, with which thousands of Chileans expressed solidarity by holding nightly vigils for a week. This silence, deafening as it was, would soon be broken. In the election to fill Alejandro's vacant senate seat, Hernan was elected in a landslide. He, three years the elder of his executed younger brother, is far more reserved than his predecessor. Behind this quiet facade sits a vengeful man, one who does not suffer fools and who is determined to see justice.*

All of the Liberale parties mentioned can remain in spirit for each candidate, but officially we must remain one party for power sake. As Liberale's, we share much of the same goals, with a bit of leniency afforded to whoever chooses to run for office under our title.

Now what's all this? That is a grammatically incorrent sentence. I tip my hat off to you at this confusing mess. How Crazzio has managed to succeed at failing this badly I shall probably never know, nor would I want to. Now fly away you annoying flier.

Or...such a merger and the resulting shut-outs of other parties will result in more radicalism. Have you people learned nothing? Shut your mouth son before you say anything you should not say. As well, your position is radically different from the common in so far as you ignore several variables which invalidate your statement.
However, such should be expected from a member of Frente Nacional. I've spent my life fighting you and I shall not stop now. You work for the detriment and destruction of our proud Chile.

The 1916 Primaries: False Dichotomy

Chile's first democratic elections in twenty years, since Rivera's surprise decision to stand down in 1896, caused a flurry of political activity unlike any ever before seen in history. Chile had been starved of self-governance during the Frente Nacional's monopoly on power. What followed was an explosion: dozens of tiny parties declared themselves as contenders for the next election, splitting and diminishing the larger handful of organizations that had dominated Chile's previous republics. Each hoped to win the first Presidency of the 4th Republic following the dissolution of the Provisional Council. However, of the dozens who declared their intention to run, only two major parties were ultimately able to secure the necessary support and signatures to field candidates for the presidency.

The Partido Liberal and FNT, the former having a strong electoral base in Chile's middle class and the latter ever popular amongst the working strata, were both narrowly able to secure the necessary signatures before the winter deadline. The Partido Comunista, as organized as it ever was, fell short of the margin by only a handful of signatures. The Republicanos, resurrected by Juan Rivera, also managed to collect only about half of the needed statements. The remaining hodgepodge of parties fell well short of the margin, though the Democratas Liberales, a party still organizing itself and backed by the shadowy ex-fascist leader Caitan Crazzio, was suspected to be near the critical mass of membership.

The invention of the radio in the late 1880s and its proliferation throughout the country around the 20th century allowed candidates to make nation-wide addresses for the first time: something that had been impossible under the cabalistic reign of fascist government. The improvement in communication, which to those lucky enough to own a wireless radio set, brought the voices of political government straight into their homes. Telephones, another invention of the modern era, were becoming commonplace in the houses of the elite. A phone survey conducted by the Santiago Political Review, a post-revolution newspaper, announced that of the parties, the Partido Liberal was the most popular, followed by the FNT, the Comunistas, and then the Republicanos. Disturbingly, the paper also reported that a number of anonymous respondents continued to voice their support for the Frente Nacional. They estimated the fascist organization's popularity at roughly that of the Comunistas. Though many questioned the accuracy of the poll, this was the only data available moving into the 1915-1916 electoral season.

The Liberales had an uncontested field as the party stood four-square behind Carlos Andonie III, but the FNT primary was a spectacle in the making. Francisco Villa, David Bevan, and Jesus Gonzales, a trio of revolutionary leaders, disputed with one another over the socialist party's nomination. Each was known for their hard-line anti-fascist stances and heroism during the overthrow of the old regime, and none among the three could be called a favorite going into the election.

-------------------------

Player Actions Needed:
As always, let me know if I've screwed something up or missed someone's candidacy. PM me your platform if I'm missing it.

There are only two parties this election, so no coalitions. Instead, the FNT is voting on its nominee.

Keep in mind that the generals and ministers and other officers of government of the Frente Nacional are still disenfranchised.

Here a sample ballots below.

Party: FNT
Candidate: Villa/Gonzales/Bevan

I'll give this two days to vote, ending 10 AM PST on the 28th.

The Frente Nacional should be a legitimate party. We will fight to get our ideas represented in the Senate.
