Alejandro Silva has a monopoly over the media. Isnt the fact that a single man controlls most newspapers and radio stations a bad idea? And he siezed a public industry for himself without the authorization of anyone else but a madman. Sure, Randy Dickhard needs to be punished as well, but I believe Alejandro Silva is an urgent matter we must attend.

The 1931 Primaries: Dichotomy

To absolutely no one's surprise, the Comunistas were not able to field a candidate for the 1931 primaries. The remnants of their defeated rebel armies had hardly been cleared from Chile's battlefields by the time of start of the campaign season, their leaders were dead or imprisoned, and their advocates scattered across the country. The Comunistas had essentially been forced underground by the defeat and did not even hold a convention that year. That left the three remaining parties: Liberales, FNT, and Republicano Nacional. Of the three parties, the Republicano Nacionales had the least controversial primaries. Again, Sebastian Montenegro put his name forward as the lone candidate for the party, but its membership numbers remained so perilously low that many doubted that the party would find its way onto the ballot.

The Liberal primary had its own drama. While the incumbent President, Daniel Palomino, was the favorite to win both the nomination and the election, cracks in his war hero political credentials had begun to appear. Surging unemployment rates under his watch had rekindled the socialist movement, and continuing rumors of corruption in the treasury did little to improve his economic stance. By the campaign season, party elder Carlos Andonie felt confident enough to re-challenge his old rival for the nomination; the two famously promised to hold a radio broadcast debate before the convention. Dark horse Ramone de Guerro hedged his bets and challenged both Andonie and Palomino. Palomino, for his part, made good on his inaugural promises to tour the war-torn Chile, a display of sympathy that was concurrent with statements of support from most of the party establishment.

The Socialist primaries took an unusual shift towards the dovish in 1931, as Alejandro Farìas emerged as the FNT frontrunner, preaching the evils of armed conflict and a promise to distance Chile from any future warfare as much as possible. Farìas' hardline socialist economic policies, promising widescale government intervention to offset rising unemployment, appealed strongly to the working man. The most controversial of Farìas' stump speech was his announced willingness to form a coalition with the Liberales. A series of moderate socialists and anti-coalition candidates emerged to oppose the frontrunner, but curiously all, like him, were anti-war.

Our economy has not yet been time to improve; we have just only gotten out of a brutal civil war, and has not yet had time to process and comprehend the depth of what has happened. After a year or so, the market will react and the economy should begin to recover, barring moves towards socialist economic policy by other nations bringing down the world market.

The only way the State can possibly save the economy, and our people with it, is to get out of the way and the market fix itself.

I agree with Señora Zepeda's ideas on how to control the current crisis; ideas which I earlier spoke about during the running announcements. Thus, I would like to see a grand coalition of Liberale and FNT, joint through Interventionist economics, and social freedom.
