All you need is a couple 40 brigade battles under your belt and you'll get that 25 warscore.

Excellet updates. I was becoming ever more worried with regards to how competently and easily you were gaining victories in the last few wars against Russia and Austria whilst freeing Poland. Thus it is a relief that whilst your own forces are still covering themselves in glory in this present war, some ally of yours is thankfully failing miserably! The coalition ranged against you is considerable and since your allies are showing a happy ineptness, this could prove a difficult war to acheive your goals. Which suits me, it promises much more fighting!

What's Russia's war exhaustion looking like? They've lost a fair few wars against you now and must be hurting because of that.

And the Ottoman Empire fielding 246 brigades! Late game wars are far more manpower hungry than I expected. Too bad they're probably all a generation behind on equipment and doctrine.

I suspect Russia haven't mobilised because they know their alliance has far more military power than yours does. Unfortunately the AI's unlikely to use this wisely, although to be honest throwing more brigades against the elite Argentinian army is probably just asking for trouble.

    Chapter Thirty-Three: A Wider War

Vaya con Queso Yes on the Ottos. On South America, mostly bits of Brazil here and there rather than real territory. The USA, Venezuela and Columbia each have one state I think. I don't have a screenie from this time tho, but not much changes before the next one I'm pretty sure.

BootOnFace Yeah, I shouldn't have a problem. Is there a predictable battle size for a big score, or was 40 brigades just a way of saying big fight?

morningSIDEr Thanks! It does get dull, at least for me, when I say "now I'm going to do this" and there's a straight line path to "this". It does get a little squiggly here.

Previously on "Last Tango" - I was kicking Russian butt and taking over large swaths of the country, but because the Ottoman Empire can't fight it's way out of a paper bag, I am technically losing the war with a -7 score.

In fact, the Austrians take part of Poland in the middle of May, 1926.

By the way, apparently I failed to take a screenshot, but Austria demanded a chunk of Poland about this time. Despite the fact that I am taking two or three provinces a week from the un-mobilized Empire of Russia, the Austrians are proving to be something of a problem in Bosnia.

On the 20th of May I take Gomel, and wait for the traditional Russian Xena warcry when that happens, but apparently the Russians don't care for Gomel as much as they used to. A few of Russian pockets are going fairly well, and one collapses in the north, taking 36,000 Russian regular army with it. On June 2 I re-took Novy Sacz for Poland. Nice of the AI to vacate the province as soon as it was taken, though really, I tend to do the same myself. I just take more provinces, if I had only one I stay in it. Russia, at least, recognizes that I am winning the war.

Here's something of an order of battle. I still can't figure out why it takes the Russians so long to mobilize. Sure, it's inconvenient when they do it mid-war, and I have to scramble, but in the meantime, western Russia is largely in Argentine hands.

Right now my only real obstacle is Austria's 374 brigades, and I am working on that.

Note that I am defending, managed to have a decent general, and the Austrians spotted a river in the mountains and crossed it. Thanks! In mid-June we conquer Slutsk. I'm sorry, you'll have to come up with your own joke here, this is a family website. I thought it was her sister. A pocket in the central part of the Russian battlefield collapses, and 37,000 regular army are eliminated. Russian conscripts are infinitely replaceable. Russian soldier Pops are not. While the fights are going reasonably well, Bosnia is getting messy.

I win the battle in Foca, but took 6000 casualties and inflicted 1600. Turkish leadership of a battle ftl. By the end of June, the war battle score is -10. I win Mostar as well in Bosnia, both sides losing 13,000 men. No pocket. This needs to change. And here is where I learned an important lesson. You know how the first into a province is the seige leader? Well, it works the same way in battles in Vicky 2, I guess. If you join your backward ally in a battle, your men will forget how to defend against Gas Attacks!

We left. On the other hand, we did start to capture various Austrian provinces. Maybe now they'll think we're winning.

Against Russia, I'm now up to a war score of +12, of 18. I've also taken three of five provinces in the state I demanded. On the other hand, at the end of July our advisers in the OE were expelled at France's urging. My allies may not fight well, but they are experts at taking casualties instead of us. Into August unfortified or poorly fortified provinces continue to fall regularly. We also begin to set up serious pockets of the remaining Austrian soldiers.

By the end of August my warscore is the same as the peace deal, both +16. The Odessa pocket collapsed taking 40,000 Russians with it. East of Odessa I notice that the Chinese have moved very far west and are setting up an occupation. Novgorod falls in the middle of September, and it turns out we've walked to the gates of St Petersburg. South of there, another Russian pocket claims 18,000 more enemy troops. At the end of the month my warscore vs Russia is up to +20, but still no separate peace. The main war is still going very poorly according to the score.

Late October sees the UK capture Johore, but in the occupations that matter I am still rolling up unmobilized Russia. I am 23/17 in score, and I have taken four of the five target provinces. In November the Russians begin White Peace spam. Typical. I earn what I have claimed and the AI offers to call it even. By November 9 I'm at 26/17. Speaking of multi-tasking, I notice that I have 200,000 unemployed in Santiago, and order the expansion of all factories. At the end of November I've reached 29/17 against Russia. To start December, I do it again!

To be fair, I was up late the previous night hoping I could wrap up this war, and it was proving more difficult than I thought. I saved the game and re-started when I woke up. So I was groggy. Also, I cashed in +7.4 battle score, and I'll get even more when I win against these guys a second time! This time I'm the attacker. <sigh> My navy catches 12 Austrian cruisers in the Ionian sea. I said my fleet was going looking for a fight, not the Royal Navy. I won! 1927 sees more provinces falling an more WP offers from Russia. I take the last target province, putting me at 32 warscore and 14 needed, but still the Russians won't concede. Russian mobilization would be a real chore about now.

    To quote myself: "HOLY CRAP!"

I mentioned that I had just woken up and I'd had a late night, right? Well, at least I can pocket Austrians in Croatia. Virtually the entire Austrian army is now in five or six pockets. One down, with 180,000 troops, two to go.

I send the battle fleet into the Black Sea to try to put myself over the top in warscore vs Russia. Third time's the charm, the pocketed, re-pocketed, and re-re-pocketed Austrians finally are captured in Radom. My warscore is down to -11 overall, and exactly 0 vs the UK, who will not take a WP. The Austrians in Cluj surrender, reducing their army by another 50,000 men. On February 15th, the Russian WP spam changes to accepting my wargoal. All my armies are now free to head south, and all of Austria's armies are pocketed.

Argentina turns to Austria and says, "now, what shall we talk about?"

Maybe they know they're going to lose and don't want to prolong the inevitable?

I wonder who it takes the frontage from: in this battle it doesn't make much difference as the Austrian's have probably got Modern Divisional Structure too, accounting for the 10-brigade maximum frontage, but it would be interesting to know if the first to battle also controls the size of your front line.

To be fair, I was up late the previous night hoping I could wrap up this war, and it was proving more difficult than I thought. I saved the game and re-started when I woke up. So I was groggy.
After a bout of insomnia last night I played through a year of my AAR game and let's just say that the outcome was a bit less organised than I'd have liked (mostly regarding missing screenshots of the biggest battle of the year and my +3 defence general dying shortly after winning said battle).

Cracking stuff, Russia had little chance in the first place but her not mobilising just made it all the more impossible. Good that you are managing to deal with the Austrians so easily. Hopefully you can keep the OE as an ally, they make great meathshields-uh, allies I mean.

Chapter Thirty-Four: The World is Changing

Vaya con Queso Absolutely. Too bad Hawaii's gone.

Dewirix You know, that's funny, but maybe they do compare military scores somehow. I didn't think to look on frontage, but I'm guessing the crappy commander controls all.

morningSIDEr Thank you, and right on the OE, many times all I need is for someone to keep some of the enemy busy, though -10 would be better than -20.

    PrawnStar Welcome, and thanks!

Previously on "Last Tango" - We freed another Polish state from the oppressive Russians, and turned our attention to Austria, which still owns one Polish core, and whose army is conveniently located in four pockets.

Here's the new and improved Poland:

Here's Moravia, which we'll add as a Free People wargoal, as soon as we are able.

    Here's some annoying news!

China has civilized. Granted this is less annoying at Rank 2 than it would have been if I'd been Rank 8 and bounced out of the GP club, but annoying anyway. Nevermind the people, money and resources lost from my Sphere of Influence, what concerns me is that China is now less likely to fight Sauron if called. Fortunately, there's not much time left before 12/31/35 for this to cause troubles for me, and they bow out whenever they have a truce with the UK, anyway. The war is still -13, however, so no adding my wargoal for some time yet. I wipe out another 100,000 Austrians, giving the good guys +10.6 warscore! And it has an immediate impact. Quittin' time!

China was pretty quick to begin acting all independent and stuff. I now have a -4 warscore, -5 is battles. However, Austria has very little army left, so all I need to do is hold out, and wait for my occupation forces to succeed. Hmm, this sounds familiar, and China is no longer fighting the UK, since their peace with the war leader, Austria (who took over when she added a wargoal, very odd IMHO) took them out of the war. So I can expect Brits walking through Russia to hit now. I look for them, in the east, on the morning of the fifth day. In March 1927 I re-sphere the Ottomans. They and Poland are my only real spherelings now. Another pocket collapses.

The Austrians are getting to be thin on the ground, there's one left in Kotor (Bioware obviously has a time machine and no sense of what it should be used for). In March we hit a warscore of zero, still not enough to add a wargoal. In April we're into positive territory, and we do. On the 20th Brno falls, the only target province without hefty fortifications. Then I get notice that the Brits have arrived, when nearly empty army is wiped out.

You know, my prevailing memory of fighting the UK in this game is probably going to be "man, they were annoying" (okay, I lied, it's gonna be "man, it was fun invading England!"). Provinces fall frequently. I'm still fighting the Austrians in Kotor, working on most of the rest of the country, and basically just trying to hold off the British.

Hey, did somebody order a general?

No sense in sending a big escort. I had no choice in what to ask for from Austria if I wanted to add to Poland, but with a 6 warscore and 57 needed, this will be something of a pain.

Finally on May 8th, the last remnants of the Austrian army are offered clean clothes and a warm bed. That's 150,000 fewer enemies than I had before, and many armies are sent to meet with Sauron's forces in the east.

Of course, they're not all in fighting trim. Provinces fall, we took Prague, the Brits took Kuala Lampur. The British see the war as slightly in their favor, and will not accept a White Peace offer. Venice Falls at the end of May, and I beat the British for another +0.6 warscore, putting me up to 13, but I need 57. What I need is to eliminate the UK from this war, so my vast holdings in Austria can seriously count toward my warscore. I took Krakow because it annoys me. I wish the Poles would add annexation of Krakow as a wargoal. I keep winning small battles against the Brits, and I own Austria over to the Bavarian border. And yes, it wasn't long before this that I finally realized that my guys trapped in Bavaria could walk to battle. The ones in Bremen and western Bavaria are still stuck. Then in June we get very good news indeed.

This changes the entire complexion of the war. Forget the UK's military forces, it's their land that matters. 100% now means 100% of Austria, not 100% of half the earth. 57% is nearly happening already.

Three provinces fall on the 12th, Dubrovnik on the 14th, and another on the 15th. China cancels China's military access to Argentina, further proof that I can't count on China to do the heavy lifting in my next tussle with Mordor. Three provinces fall on the 25th, and it seems to me that only the clock is my enemy now. I'm at a warscore of 51 and I need 57. Two more provinces fall on July 7th, giving me a warscore of 54/57, and Austria finally calls it quits. Hey, thanks for adding that wargoal, guys. You saved me a DoW later.

Poland looks like a giant maw, waiting to gobble up more. Which it is.

If you're not careful Poland will end up as a GP too (although in reality there's not much chance of that given the vast scores needed now).

Outrageous behaviour! You'd almost think the Chinese think it right that they determine their own fate rather than being bullied around-uh, carefully led, by a nation thousands of miles away!

Good to see further gains for Poland, she's starting to look a considerable power in Europe now and, rather more importantly, her font is growing larger - ever the sign of a nation on the rise.

Chapter Thirty-Five: At World At War

brycef How true, everybody and his brother has big time allies. The UK Sphere looks like the UN.

Dewirix It'd be nice, and yes, I feel pretty confident on Rank #2. I might not even need to DoW someone

Vaya con Queso I forget what game it was I saw those up close recently (maybe Austria and not so recently), but yeah, those east/central European states can be great.

morningSIDEr I'm glad we're i complete agreement, then. It's surprising how satisfying those nice big letters are. Maybe I should have played Chile.

Avindian Thank you, I don't think I have either. I guess the three oppressor states might beat each other up, but they're strong enough to keep from falling apart.

Previously on "Last Tango" - We freed some of Poland from Russia to connect up the two halves, and Austria volunteered to add another state.

That was generous. Unfortunately, once again the hardest part of any war proves to be cleaning up after. I really need to stop saving and quitting when the war ends (even though this is when I write up the chapter[s] on the war). It makes coming back somewhat unpleasant.

I disbanded my army in western Bavaria, but left the guys in Bremen. See that army in the far west of Austria, the one not moving? Yeah, I've played ahead a bit, and they hang out in Milan and wait for the next war. Why the long face, men? I hear Milan is an excellent location. In the meantime, I've been working on my navy, in hopes of someday being able to fight at sea, and move troops freely about the ocean.

My expenses and income are both 97,000 per day, 85,000 is supplies even at 85%. In February 1928, my loss of focus allowed Germany to bounce Poland out of our Sphere of Influence. My gradual work in Argentine elections to move the people gently to the left (but not as far as my Capi's tendency to socialism), shows it's first fruits, as the Liberal party garners 0.51% of the vote! Only two orders of magnitude to go. Santiago's natural unemployment hits 200,000. I have no NF there, and generally build every factory I can when I notice it. Having decided that the BB limit won't mean much to me now, I DoW Belgium with annexation as my goal. The sphere leader, France, declines to fight me, as I expected.

This won't take long. By the way, I figured out how I can finish the game in second place: be at war! It's cheesy and I'd like to avoid that, but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. Antwerp, which had rebels working it over when the war started, falls in 25 days. I didn't know you inherited siege progress, but I can't see why else that would happen. To keep the boring wars easy to handle in the AAR, I DoWed Sokoto with annexation as the goal as well. I live to serve. This has the added side effect of only giving me one burst of excess military spending instead of two. I have 250,000 troops in Africa which weren't in a position to be transported during the war after being recruited. My Infamy is now 55. Let's see what happens. In November I add Poland back to my Sphere of Influence. Here's a shot which shows, I think, something I've done right.

I've been building and expanding factories in Buenos Aires since the start of the game, pretty much constantly. I have had a Craftsmen NF going for decades, but still, I think it's proof that pre-building factories is a very good plan if you expect serious immigration. Or if you have Chinese-like state populations. I now have roughly a million workers in this one state, and profits are nearly 30,000 a day. In February 1929 the long Belgian seiges are over, and the country is annexed.

My wartime spending is nearly 130,000 a day, and my treasury drops to near 5 million at one point. In May 1929, I annex Sokoto.

The map is cleaner, but we're still disappointed in the font department. We have a font-size gap! In October, checking around at my options, I see that I do not have the capacity to declare war on Austria, who is still a GP, #6 in fact. This seems odd. It must be because I have no selectable wargoals, which must mean that certain wargoals are not permitted during a truce? To celebrate Black Friday, the Brits DoW France. This makes me very happy, and prompts me to plan my next war a bit early. My truces are up in 1932, but I care not. I think the whole world should be at war.

We have over 1325 brigades of a possible 1600. In January 1930 the Brits ask us for military access. No, I want you to suffer, or at least to walk the long way. We DoW Russia, while still having a truce, with that cut-off Russian state as our target.

Here's the soon-to-be opposing forces. I'll call allies again, but while I don't understand how truces work, I know enough that my allies will ignore me, while my enemy's allies are allowed in.

The Brits are at -5 in their war against France, and my target costs only a warscore of 28, so this war looks good to me. I'm two years ahead of the expiration of the truce, so it costs me 4 BB instead of three <yawn> and -20 prestige, which is just four lions being taught the circle of life. It does add 2 MIL, though, so it's not quite as painless and attractive as I'd first thought, unless you want MIL. I divide up my armies, and send them into undefended Russia. If Russia doesn't mobilize again this war, this could get dull. Well, duller. Argentina need more than Russia to keep her on her toes these days.

The added MIL gets me only an offer of adopting the 14 hour workday, which I've been refusing for ages. China, btw, won't allow our troops access. Our enemies this war are the same as the last one, UK/Russia/Austria and the minors (I just realized that, like the ugly girl at the popular nightspot, Austria was not on the list, <14 brigades!). I notice that Serbia is empty, so I decide to change that.

Three provinces in, I finally found some Russians. The Peleliu approach? I picked a naval commander, +1/+1, and sent my battle fleet looking for some real opposition. I decide not to waste troops on the Austrians this time, they're not doing much of anything. I do send men to occupy Vienna. I'm disappointed to find a real contest in Korea, with my one 30,000 man army, but not very. I recruit some tanks there, though.

Russia launches her second (after mobilization) most effective defensive tactic !

Revolts! Some of them are serious, and in the midst of all of this I'm reminded why I prefer having China fight.

I'm trying to pocket Russians, and Sauron is interfering. I capture Kiev, and dispatch most rebels easily, but the UK are piling in over near the Crimea. Through March the easy Russian provinces fall, and I push into their territory. But it's not the Russian soldiers I have to worry about.

I demand Tirol from Austria to permit me to engage in separate negotiations. Austria is war leader, which still seems odd to me. My target state costs 31 warscore before I've taken any, and my vs Russia warscore is 1. This will take some time. Meantime, all the troops I have to devote to the UK means that my Russian wins are not against troops in pockets, and I often take more casualties than I inflict. However, I noted that the UK was suffering some blockades, implying that the French were doing a number on her navy, so I went to help.

I decide to use a retreat to help pocket some UK troops.

My other attempts to establish pockets have simply resulted in stretching my troops further and further to the east, closer to where the UK armies are coming from. How convenient for them.

Into April that Crimea fighting continues while I take Russian provinces regularly. I pocket 24,000 Russians in Minsk, so one side of the war is going quite well. The Austrians are content to have me occupy their capitol and make no real effort anywhere. Granted, I did just finish killing all their soldiers, and I guess it's seriously expensive in some way to mobilize a country. Otherwise why are Russia and Austria sitting on their hands? In May I take the first of my five target provinces, reducing the warscore needed, I have +8 and need +29 as far as Russia is concerned. I also begin taking bits of Serbia.

By late May, in the east, I have one serious pocket going, but several iffy battles are all that's keeping it sealed up.

With what you can't see here (mostly in the Crimea), I face around 700,000 British soldiers in the Odessa region, and there are plenty more where they came from. I win a sea battle in the Firth of Forth, and think to myself, hey, I can move around freely on the ocean. That changes things!

It may not matter the Russia and Austria haven't mobilized, not with the amount of troops the British have sent in. There are at least 600.000 British soldiers in that last screenshot. What kind of casualty rates are you taking/inflicting?

Of course, you've beat them before (three times, I think? I don't know, I lost count :P), so maybe I shouldn't worry =)

Victory to the glorious forces of liberation!

You might want to take war goals from Britain as well while you're at it if you squash their army. After all the infamy doesn't matter anymore.

The British fleet in the Channel didn't seem to be having a great deal of fun anyway, and then 500 Argentine ships hove into view.

Not sure why you couldn't declare war against Austria. It should be possible at all times, but I've never broken a truce as I resent having to pay the prestige cost. It's always the score I find hardest to come buy.

Nice work in the Crimea using a retreat to perform an encirclement.

Good to see that even if Russia is unwilling to properly defend herself her citizens are happy to rise up and 'greet' the liberating forces of Argentina! I'm also glad that Argentina's liberating mission continues without heed for truces or other nonsense such as that. Annexing Sokoto and Belgium so as to 'liberate' them by joining them up with the rest of Sokoto and Belgium, that is with Argentina, was an excellent move!

Chapter Thirty-Six: Freedom of the Seas

Vaya con Queso Casualties are a good ratio, as we'll see soon and true, I've beaten the Brits a few times, but typically I have more troops where the actual fighting is taking place, which always helps.

brycef Yes! And good idea, though I'm running out of time

Dewirix I don't get the grey-ed out DoW either. Thanks on retreat, it's funny what you accustomed to thinking of when you've been fairly desperate a few times.

morningSIDEr Absolutely, and all my new citizens can save bundles on fancy Argentine goods!

Previously on "Last Tango" - having learned that the French navy has apparently reduced the UK navy to nuisances, and facing a British onslaught near Odessa, Argentina decides to use its navy to ferry troops from one place to another in wartime.

By mid-June 1930, I'm actually losing previously taken Russian provinces to UK armies. I cannot afford to chase them off, given several battles where Argentines are outnumbered. On June 24th I annex Serbia, because I can, and because nobody else bothered. The map of Europe is looking different.

My naval research continues, and the pocket in the Crimea is looking pretty good.

The other pockets are looking a little raggedy. And yes, folks, that message that I'd taken Milan was my very first clue that I'd forgotten an entire army from the last war.

In a minor pocket I eliminate 33,000 British soldiers, but as you can see, the UK outnumbers the Argentines in others.

The warscore is up to 13, and the warscore needed down to 25, but even if I got to 25/25 I know the Russians wouldn't simply give in. Then suddenly, with the timely delivery of serious reinforcements, I gained a whole new respect for the value of a navy.

At the end of July I eliminate the minor UK force of 15,000 in Krivoy Rog. My battles are +15, but only count against the enemy war leader, Austria. I feed the reinforcements into the battles, and send my fleets off to ferry more armies to places they are needed.

I then rotate some exhausted armies out of combat to rest. In mid-August I took Vienna, and other than a few provinces near Serbia I decide to continue to leave the war leader alone. I'm now 21/25 (if I drop my demand for Tirol) against Austria. The Brits, meanwhile, are all over the place, sliding past the battles near the Crimea all the way up to Novgorod. I have troops over St. Pete, and I've taken provinces near there, but I do not have a large force. I make a conscious decision to retreat toward St. Pete in one battle, costing me -3.2 and -2.9 in warscore for two battles. I'm now +11 in Battles through the entire war. The St Pete situation is about to change.

On September 9th I took St Petersburg. I redirect my fleet there, but the Russian navy comes out to play, and I have to fight off a fleet of 0/24/13 with my own of 216/141/186. That takes only a few days. Meanwhile, the French may be at war with the UK, but they seem to have a thing about their border with me. There's just no trust in this world anymore.

One of my armies which retreated near St Petersburg wins against the UK, with recent reinforcements, for a warscore of +0.1. Not quite the average of -3.5 I lost when I retreated. At the end of September, a smaller UK pocket collapses in Kharkov, claiming 30,000 Brits, at battle which gets me +4.0 BAttle Score.

The following day the pocket in Crimea collapses, taking 75,000 Brits, though 2/3rds of them had to be killed. At least I got my battle score back. Not coincidentally, a few days later Austria offers me the Russian-Polish province, but of course not Tirol. I take a look at the progress I am making on the nearly half-million Brits I have pocketed and decide to fight on. A few days after that, the French and UK reach a White Peace, and all I can think is that my war is suddenly going to change for the worse, and I'm going to be made to suffer, all because I wanted to kill a few hundred thousand people.

Then I take the fourth of the five provinces I am claiming, and feel better about making a separate peace with Russia, and after that doing what I want with Austria. The Austrians have no troops and have not mobilized. Still, I'm 22/18 and even though I am over what I am claiming, the Russians won't give me what I want. At the end of October, the Austrians make the same offer, and I again say no. I have places to go, people to kill. My St Pete reinforcements are making quick work of the opposing forces, too.

That shot is after we've chased those Brits through two or three battles. On November 13, 1930, the Austrians make the same offer a third time, and meaning to turn them down, I accidentally say yes! That's why I seldom open WP spam, hitting the wrong button is a real risk. On the other hand, honestly, I never wanted Tirol and cannot recall why I picked it in the first place. All I was fighting for was to kill those British soldiers so I'd never have to deal with them again. That's not really a good reason to keep fighting. As a bonus for losing Tirol, Argentines get Militant and I'm offered another political reform. I pick Gerrymandering, since I'm hoping to move from Conservative to Liberal before the game ends (as unlikely as that is).

Look how nice Poland looks these days.
