Chapter I - King & Christianity

The year of 1936 marked the beginning of a new era for the Kingdom of Norway. Worried by the political and economical instability of the European order, which has been established after World War I, King Haakon VII decided, that Norway could not stand by and watch as the world sinks deeper into the abyss of war anymore. It was time for the Scandinavian country to play a new role in the world politics. This, however would require some preparations.

00101xh.png

First off, Norway would have to break free from it's secure and peaceful isolation it lived in. The North of Europe did not pose any danger to anyone - neither it's inhabitants nor anyone else, but many once peaceful regions of the world were drawn to death and destruction in the last global conflict. A functional intelligence service had to be created.

00102c.png

The rather weak Royal Army would never be able to withstand most other European Military Forces, and had no means to defend the large territory of Norway or counter any modern weapons like tanks and aircrafts. So the King ordered to create tank brigades in order to strengthen those two lone infantry divisions. New conscription laws were passed, which quickly brought the Royal Army to a full strength of 20.000 men. This doubled the military power of Norway within mere weeks.

00103.png

The economy however did not allow for much greater expansions of the Norwegian Forces and the construction of new factories would take ages. The Kingdom had to expand and a victim was found rather quickly: Ireland. It was within range of the Royal fleet, it's military was much weaker than Norway's, it did not receive any political support from any Great Power and had internal struggles between Protestants and Catholics.

00104.png

Offering itself as protective power of the Protestant Christians in the North, Norway layed down claims on the provinces around the city of Belfast. Unable to fight back on any political or military level, Ireland gave in to the demands and ceded to territory to King Haakon VII. This brought 5 additional IC units to the Kingdom, but also gave birth to a new enemy of the Kingdom. Ireland would have to be watched, but as the King said: "If we want to be the Third Counterweight in the Northern Sea, standing on equal ground with England and Germany, then we cannot allow ourselves to be afraid of Ireland!"

00105.png

As time went by, a new alliance has been forget deep within the land masses of Asia. Tibet and Mongolia - both of them feeling betrayed by history - signed a pact, that would soon stir things up in the region. The King, for now, took note of the events, but didn't give them more attention.

00106r.png

An issue of much more concern though, was the Second Russian Civil War. The absolutist Russia found itself splintering into even more nations fighting each other, than before. Russia, Soviet-Russia and Siberia were suddenly all at war with each other. One thing was perfectly clear: Whoever wins this war, would emerge as a strong force to be reckoned with afterwards.

00107.png

Witnessing the weakness of Ireland, the Union of Britain decided, that it also wanted a part of the cake and set sail for the green island. Germany quickly intervened, stating that Ireland would be under the protection of Mitteleuropa, but didn't guarantee it's independence, though. This actually brought Norway and Britan closer together and would result in the infamous 'Pact with the Devil', were Haakon VII would give the British Syndicalists Military Access in exchange for political support, even though he previously banned Syndicalist Parties in Norway.

00108.png

The inevitable eventually happened: Tibet and Mongolia entered a war for supremacy in Easter China against their common neighbour Xibei Lianbang Yiyuan. The victor of this war would become a serious regional power and a possible interest for Norway, as the King stated on that day.

00109.png

Similiar events took place in the Middle East, were the Arabian Union started to plan bringing down the Goliath of the Ottoman Empire. Was the whole world heading to war once again? Norway - for now - had no immense interest in those conflicts. Oil was of no concern until Norway had units actually needing oil.

00110.png

Furthermore Germany sold Crete back to Greece in order to suppress the depression with more money and Panama joined the United Provinces. Many small countries were one the rise it seemed...

00111.png

With the tank brigades finally finished in summer, the concern of Northern Ireland came back in peoples conciousness. More a more rebel activity was noticed in Belfast. Haakon VII decided, that Northern Ireland had to be colonized. Young Norwegian men were therefore trained as Militia and Police units, who would later be sent there. Intelligence Service also received more fundings in order to destroy those resistance groups more quickly.

00112.png

This was further supported by Odd Hassel's project to create a basic computing machine. The Hassel I would become of the first of it's kind in the world, which brought Norway a big deal of international prestige.

00113.png

The war in Asia meanwhile continued with Tibet falling and the Front of the Mongolians starting to cluster. Both forces seemed to be even, but who would eventually receive Haakon's support? It was decided to wait for further developments again.

00114j.png

By the end of the year the only two importants events were the start of a German-Portuguese Colonial War, which would clearly be decided by Mittelafrika and the release of Korea and Formosa by Japan, who became the 'Bastion of Freedom'. Portugal and Japan would soon be considered for deeper diplomatic interaction by Norway...

You've chosen a good nation. Lots of interesting paths for Norway in Kaiserreich.

Seizing Northern Ireland is a bit ridiculous, but I'm interested to see where you go from here. Will the pact with Britain lead to a Radical Socialist Norway?

i'll be following this :)
i hope you'll manage to become a third power in the northern sea :)
will you mostly try to enlarge your navy, or are you planning a big land army also? (i guess manpower might be a big issue)

Unusual nation, will fallow this with great interest.

Awesome way you make the pictures for this aar! And go grab Ireland you viking king!

@OutsiderSubtype: No Syndicalism. It's the one thing I will fight no matter what. Therefore: 'Pact with the Devil'

@gooy: I'm sadly not experienced at all, when it comes to Navy. I'll try to keep a good balance between Army and Navy though. When the time comes, hints and tipps are welcome. Manpower is indeed an issue - therefore I plan to use many puppets.

@Soulstrider: I don't like playing the big nations, but I also dislike ridiculous world conquests with Luxembourg or Haiti, so I chose a medium Regional Power :)

@Davisx3m: Thank you! Ireland shall indeed be one of my first victims.

Chapter II - Radical Uprisings and Unexpected Help

A further political push out of isolation finally brought Norway the opportunity to join and create Military Alliances. With it's limited manpower pool, the Kingdom would have to rely on Allies - wether they want to be allied or not. The idea of puppeting Nations fascinated Haakon VII and he would put it to use, when the time would come.

00201.png

The year of 1937 however began rather unpleasant. First Syndicalist groups, that emerged from pact with the Union of Britain tried to overthrow the Monarchy, despite the 1936 Ban of Syndicalism in Norway and as a response to this right-wing Facists tried to take over shortly after proclaiming to protect Norway from those terrorists. Haakon managed to keep his reign and government but faced severe dissent now.

00202.png

Norway was indeed on verge of Civil War with more than 30% of it's populance demonstrating and striking. Northern Ireland could've been taken over by local Nationalists any day back then, but in the most desperate hour and unexpected ally suddenly jumped in to help Norway. It was indeed a wise decision to keep up the ties with Britain...

00203fa.png

Meanwhile a new possible victim for Norwegian expansion was found. Denmark decided to further industrialize it's North Atlantic provinces. Province that were far away from their mainland, where a small army was just waiting to surrender to anyone posing a threat. For now, though, it still had it's independence guaranteed by Germany.

00204.png

On the stage of World Politics many different events took place at that time. The USA fought a short Civil War for a few months, but emerged victorious, crushing all Syndicalist and Nationalist foes. However, Hawaii gained it's independence, Canada seized Alaska and installed a puppet in New England, Liberia found a new protector in National France and Guam was seized by the Japanese. Shortly after a Civil War broke out in Spain, which had to be concluded yet. In the Middle East, Iran together with Azerbaijan and Afghanistan formed a powerful block of mutual assistance in case of foreign invasion.

00205.png

A much more interesting war took place in South America with Syndicalist and Nationalist Powers fighting for supremacy over the continent. The winner would truly become a global power. Haakon VII did not state anything regarding this conflict in order to not agitate the British, who helped him so much.

00206.png

The Russian Civil War ended with a defeat for the Bolsheviks and a peace between Russia and Siberia. Russia however decided to expand further and threatened Alash Orda now. Their ultimate goal was the Reunification of the Tsarist lands. Simultaneously, Mongolia won it's war against Xibei Lianbang Yiyuan and became the sole ruler of East China. When Siberia entered a war against Japan, Korea and Trans-Amur, who tried to assume control of Pacific Siberia, Mongolia decided to use the opportunity to expand yet again.

00207.png

Early August finally brought an end to the fear for Northern Ireland. With the Transport vessels and the Militia Division finally ready for service, they were stationed in Belfast and suppressed the local riots. To King Haakon, this Militia however was only the first piece of his Invasion Force, which would be established soon. Irish troops were gathering at the border for some time. War would be inevitable in the near future...

Chapter III - One Day of War

With the military taking care of revolters, Norwegian economy and politics could now focus on stabilizing the country once again. This took almost half a year, but eventually the dissent went down and the economy recovered. A lot of money was invested into national research. The Royal Army witnessed a year of heavy modernization and the introduction of new tactics for naval invasions.

00301.png

It was in summer 1938, when Danish politics actually went down in favor for King Haakon VII. The Danish government decided to release Iceland as an independent nation. A fragile island within range of the Royal navy and with no ties to anyone in Europe. A perfect victim for the new concept of naval invasion. Preparations were sped-up now and the invasion of Ireland was postponed for now. Iceland had to be annexed within a year - by all costs!

00302.png

While Norwegian preparations were underway, a new shift in power took place in the depths of Siberia. Transamur successfully seized the East of the massive country, while Mongolia secured itself large parts of the central expanses. Roman Ungern von Sternberg became one of the most powerful men in Asia. But Russia also expanded, securing itself the Crimea peninsula and overrunning the Don-Kurban Union, Alash Orda and Turkestan. It would just be a matter of time, before these two empires would clash.

00303y.png

In Fall 1939 preparations were finished and with a newly formed Transport Flotilla and Infantry Division, the small nation was overrun within a day. The new concept of Naval Invasion worked out perfectly. Large amounts of gold reserves were recovered in Reykjavik. This expedition definitly paid out well for Norway. Large scale upgrades of the Norwegian Royal Armed Forces would be scheduled for now. An Invasion of Ireland was planned for 1940. This enemy however would not fall as easily as Iceland. Haakon knew that, but Norway had to expand further - engulfing the British Syndicalist with it's possessions.

I like where this is going! :D Onwards to Copenhagen - err, I mean, citizen's rights and world peace! :p

Nooooo......:( My glorious Fatherland needs you in these dire times...:(

I'd really like to continue my game as it was.
The savedebug file revealed, that the ownership of several provinces is not defined anymore.

However, when I try to open my savegame file in the texteditor, the program itself doesn't respond anymore.
I guess I'm doing it wrong somehow. How does one edit these savegame files properly?

Try Notepad++

@BeardedHoplite: Most of them were self-made. I create them as I need them. The '31 Infantry is from the DH SKIF Minor Set II. I'll release a full set of mine, once this AAR is finished.

@everyone: I couldn't really fix that savegame, so I'll use an older save from August '37 and play up to January '40 again. Some minor changes will be inevitable, but I'll follow my Chapter III update as closely as possible. More later~

Okay, I've tried two times already - even with monthly saves.
But when I pass a certain date in the game (Fall '38), all my saves get corrupted.

I checked the Tech Support for DH, but their solutions didn't work for me. It seems the problem itself is rooted in Kaiserreich, but so far the Dev team did not find a complete solution. I'll have to wait for a patch then :(

I tried both: latest patch and beta patch with hotfix - same problem with both versions...
