We have already reached September 1939-in two sittings. As this AAR was not really planned from the beginning some details of the first few years will be rather lite. The USA wars of righteous defense and spreading democracy will be well covered.

You found a group that will let someone play as U.S.A.?

It was suggested to me-not my first choice. However, the Japan player sounds like a pro. I am expecting the worst when war breaks out between the USA and Japan. Victory will not come easily. As you will see in this AAR the USA starts off in rather bad shape. It has a long way to go to become a threat to Germany or Japan. Eventually, that point will come.

In 1936 the USA was in the depths of a depression. Going to war was the last thing on most anyone’s' mind. However, there were some who knew full well that war will once again come to Europe-and thus present some likely challenges for the U.S. Our good friends in the far east, Japan, is acting a bit bold these day's too.

There were a couple great problems for those that wanted to prepare for the coming war-one, the terrible economic conditions, and the reality of the average American's point of view that it is futile to get involved with European disagreements.
There was little enthusiasm to shed American blood again for some foreign spat.
None the less, the U.S.A. must prepare for war.

As the USA, even under the current dire circumstances has an abundance of resources, the chemical and resource czar is being sacked. It is viewed as a wiser step to look into increasing practical knowledge of heavy aircraft-as it seems reasonable such planes would be needed in a future war.

As can be seen from this political situation below, it will be a long time before the U.S.A. Can Utilize its inherent power.

The Democrat Party is currently in firm control. With the interesting times ahead, there will no doubt be challenges. J Edger seems like the best man for the job in keeping both potential enemy spies from affecting the nations politics and for spreading good will for the Democrat Party.

In keeping with the long held Monroe Doctrine, European and other power's are to be restrained in their activities in the America's-especially in vulnerable South American nations. To make a reasonable effort, significant leadership must be dedicated to the intelligence services. Aside from the home front, priority will be applied to major south American nations. There will not be new agents sent to likely enemy nations for some time.

The various South American nations can go any way at this time-they must be kept from the clutches of the new radicals.

Brazil looks like a likely candidate for problems. As soon as possible US agents will be sent south to help them make the correct choices.

USA Economy

With the serious economic problems, there does not seem to be much sense in building new factories. However, some slight increase in factory space will be aimed for. Any improvement in the economy will far outweigh any new factories. A somewhat import factor; we don't want to forget how to build things.

Naval aviation, including aircraft carriers, will be kept on the highest priority. It is known that the Japanese are building such vessels-the USA will not be left behind. These ships and air units will receive a higher priority than new factories-or anything else for the foreseeable future.

The US Navy currently has three such ships. These two will be completed in late '36, by which time new technological advances will allow for another one to be laid down.
The carrier fleet should have ten large carriers by 1940-and perhaps some escort type carriers.

Due to our current excellent relations with the Germans, some good intelligence has been made available regarding their current political situation.

Even though it is comparatively small, its current political and economic situation places it at somewhat of an advantage to the United States. Hopefully they will use this strength to build cruise ships-and not battle ships.

It will likely be years before the US can achieve such unity as what the German government currently enjoy's.

Starting Techs

The USA has kept abreast of leading nations in naval designs and aircraft, but it has apparently fallen well behind in new heavy fighting vehicles and even in light weapons. There is now a rush to get caught up, but it will likely take years to do so.

The new light tanks are almost worthless-no point in building any. The various types of artillery will also require large amounts of research to bring those up to modern standards.

Infantry also lags far behind the major European powers-and likely the Japanese also.

1936 Political and Diplomatic Events

As the year of 1936 rolled on, the Italian war against Ethiopia came to an end-Italy annexed Ethiopia. As the U.S. Has no real interest in East Africa at this time, relations with Italy will resume as normal. Trading will be allowed-even allowing Italy to import rares in large numbers. Germany is also engaged in trading with the USA. Large amounts of goods are being imported from Germany. This can be afforded due to large exports of various resources.

The United Kingdom and the USSR are high on the priority list for trading-most favored nation status for both. As the UK will likely be an ally of the US, all cooperation possible will be given them.

The USA had made some improvements in total production capacity and efficiency. Unfortunately, some events occurred that drew down the US economy several percentage points. Even so, as the year ended, production had improved.

Which decisions to make regarding strikes and public scandals is not always easy. The President must decide...

A few of the events that occurred follow;

This "average financial power" replaced the previous "weak" power. It was a welcome reprieve.

Although the cost is high for such events such as enhanced counter espionage, it is well worth it sometimes.

It is an ongoing task to keep such groups as the America First parties or the socialists from gaining too much ground. The FBI helps in such efforts-after all, it is not just about the Democrat Party.

Harsh house rules. It will be interesting to follow, though.

Yes, those seem a bit harsh. However, just which side it is worse for is debatable. Intially I thought the Axis, especially Japan, would be limited to a larger degree. As it has unfolded, the Axis have done quite well. I did have to break, or bend a rule-about trade. I do not see why the USA would continue to trade with Germany after it had conquered Poland. In another odd situation;OItaly took its core lands from France-without joining the Axis. Under the circumstances I felt justified in embargoing Italy also. Of course-this while the USA is not at war. I may have to drop the embargoes, but will only have limited trade.

Don't forget that the US was still quite happy to trade with Japan after they set up Manchukuo.

True, but the Japanese Empire player has really outdone his RL counterparts in China :) I need to get some more screenshot's posted to show the situation. China was almost totally under Jap control by '39. I wonder just what that has done for the Rising Sun's IC levels? I suspect hard times are coming in the Pacific.

1937 to 1938

The primary challege for the US for this two year period was to improve various military and industrial technologies. Priority has been given to naval techs followed by aircraft techs. Production of various prototypes have been initiated along with a large serial run of destoyers. The merchant fleet and light escorts have also been produced. In the event of war, one thing that cannot run in short supply will be cargo ships.

There has been some small improvment in production. However, the high nuetrality level is preventing any large increases. New factories have opened, but overall increase has been rather small. There are frequent problems which come up that have a negative impact on production, national unity, political party growth and Democrat Party growth or loss in support. It is an ongoing struggle to insure the President Roosevelt will win the next election while preventing additional debilitating events.

While the US has just been trying to recover its economy, the Japanese Empire has gone on a hellish empire expansion program. There was not very much the US could do to help the Chinese defend themselves, but some help was sent.

War-July 1939

The war that had long been expected finally broke out. Germany attacked Poland and the UK and France promptly issued declarations of war on Germany.

The German's used a new type of warfare-the battles in Poland were brief-the whole campaign was brief. Poland had surrendered before the French Army had made a move. The Russians stabbing Poland in the back no doubt sped the collapse of the nation.

Italy is remaining Neutral.

The War Expands

If there was any doubt as to whether this would be a phony war or a real shooting war the matter was settled in August of 1939. The first move of Germany was to absorb Luxembourg. This move by Germany was somewhat expected, still did not clarify its intentions.

The next assault removed any doubt as to the course the war was going to follow-whatever Germany needs to do to achieve victory-it will do. The actions against Denmark and Norway were so swift that the wars almost went unnoticed.
By the 20th of August it looks like the fighting is over in the north.

The German DoW on The Netherlands came on the 6th of September. It is now clear that the German leader is intent on forcing a decisive campaign this year-rather than wait until spring as had been thought possible.

6septdowonnether.jpg

By maestro252 at 2011-06-22

The next, and most predictable yet, action by Germany was issuing a DoW on Belgium on September 9. Soon, the real fighting would begin when the German Army runs headlong into the French Army. The Germans are already a veteran force--a slim advantage perhaps.

The German Onslaught on the West

As the campaign developed, the predictable happened-at first. The German right flank crashed into French forces inside Belgium. It was known that the UK was not going to be sending any significant force (if anything) to the Continent in '39. At first contact, it looked like France was going to hold the line. By 18September, the German forces had not made any decisive headway.

By maestro252 at 2011-06-22

A few days later it looked like the Belgium Army was surrounded and nearly knocked out of the war, but the front was still coherent.

By maestro252 at 2011-06-22

Three weeks later, on the 15th of October, the Allies and their sympathizers were stunned-the Germans did to the French what they had just done to the Belgium's and Poles. France was teetering.

On the 18 of October, 1939, it was all but finished-Germany had triumphed.
