Chapter 5: To Grow, And To Prepare

With the war finally over, the reserves of the army were finally allowed to return to their normal lives, though at a lower amount leaving then had joined. This war had not only showed how important the role numbers were taking in modern war, but of the importance of well-trained officers and generals as well. Much effort would be put into encouraging more officers among the nobility of Taiwan, as well as seeking military instruction from foreign armies, such as Scandinavia and the Dual Monarchy, both of whom seemed interested in our growing nation, both having sent a small number of interested merchants to the port of Shanghai, hoping for exclusive rights to our large supply of tea. They also brought the news that our great Kingdom had fallen from the list of Great Powers, and in our place, the vile Plantagenets. King Zheng personally wrote a letter to the leader of the nation of the Seven Republics, a man calling himself "President of the Seven Republics" a name unheard of among our people, giving him his moral support and any tea his nation requires to bring down these now hated mongrels.

v23g.png

There then came news of yet more war on the mainland, though luckily we are not involved. It seems that the Daxi leadership, upset over the loss of a path to continued conquest against the Ming, decided to overthrow the entire Shun Kingdom and ordered their tired and weary troops over their shared border. This has brought the Shun allies, the Manchu, into the war, and it seems that the Daxi are being whipped for their ignorance.

v24.png

Time continues on, and a new Upper House is convened, this time with very little change it seems, though the Liberals and Reactionaries have grown a bit. Hopefully this time of peace and expansion will allow the Monarchists to grow once more.

v25i.png

The year continues on, very little happening except plans for new modern divisions to be raised and new infrastructure to be built. Then in February, we receive news from India, that the nation of Travancore has westernized, allowing it to raise modern troops of their own, and giving them the legitimate reason to spread their borders and reclaim any lost land. A royal envoy was sent with a gift to the new nation, increasing our relations with them greatly, perhaps we shall see an ally on the Indian sub-continent in the future.

v26i.png

After this, Zheng Bei decides to make an official state visit to the nation of Grand Colombia on Arcadia, where they have recently released information of a new addition to their republic. For several years, the region of Bikeyah had seen tremendous growth in immigrants from Grand Colombia, and after the recent removal of the lands in Amerique from the republic, had seen to petition to be included into this Grand nation and were accepted with open arms.

v27o.png

After this visit, with several Grand dinners in several Grand palaces, Bei decided to visit the splinter nations on Amerique, one of which that had already garnered the attention of our prestigious King. The King traveled across the tropical lands into several new nations, Granada, Essequibo, Arequipa, and Quito, which had during our war with the Ming, freed their slaves and incorporated them into their society. Bei was very impressed with these nations and their hospitality, and future plans were made for visits from these nation's leaders to Tungning, it was planned that things would be Grand.

v28s.png

Life continued on, when in March it was heard that in the distant land of the Ottoman Empire, a period of civil war for 20 years had finally ended, and with several new nations joining the ranks of the world. We see in these nations, ourselves and our struggle against Ming oppression. Gifts were sent to these fledging nations but no planned visits were made, given the still hot relations between these nations and the Empire.

v29.png

At the end of March, there was news that the now tiny nation of Crimea had finally westernized, in face of aggressive neighbors to the north. Having lost more than 2/3 of their land to the combined might of Muscovy and Poland-Lithuania, they would need this standing in hopes of intervention from the rest of the world for their continued existence as a independent nation. Though tensions between the Poles and Muscovy Russians seemed to be intensifying with several border disputes and skirmishes.

v210.png

At the beginning of May, there was the release of a new national census, started after the ending of the war, and much was learned from it. The percentage of people considered in our primary culture, the Min, had dropped from 37.3% of our total population to just under 13 at 12.8% while the level of our accepted culture, the Nanfaren had jumped from 45% to just over 56 at 56.2%. This shocked the nobility, but still provided the opportunity to raise modern armies, accepting the Nanfaren into out ranks with open arms. The total amount of farmers in our nation had dropped to 75% and with laborers jumping to 14.2%, this was great news, as the policy to steer away from farming seemed to be working. The people seemed to still be in a mood for more land gain, as well as a continued uniting religion amongst our people. All in all, our total population jumped to 13.91 million people from our former 14.5 million, thanks to the acquisition from the Ming, though at the cost of these regions now being considered by many as "colonies".

v211u.png

This census was followed by the unveiling of an impressive endeavor by the Ministry of the Navy. This endeavor would see to a complete modernization of the Navy, with an expansion of the transport fleet, new home constructed frigates, as well as foreign built Man'o'wars, 2 being constructed in the Dual Monarchy and 1 in Scandinavia. It was hoped that this modernization would allow for our navy to control the seas off China and allow us to unite all the former realms of the once great empire.

v212.png

Our scientists soon made a breakthrough in the field of Basic Chemistry, and new effort was being put into the area of Malthusian Thought. This will hopefully allow us to gain more prestige amongst the world as well as our new chemistry giving us more room to develop farming pesticides and fertilizers.

v213.png

The year continued on, with more things of interest happening. The nation of Rhonnst in the deep forests of Arcadia, had finally westernized upon pressure from the growing powers of Vinland and Qingquio in August. There was then news that the Funj Sultanate had expanded their borders north, at the expense of the Egyptians, this too in August. Finally, in September we recieved news of the ending of the war between the Shun and Daxi. It turns out original prediction on how the Daxi would do has proven true, as they have lost their recently acquired land from the Ming to the Shun. It now looks as if ourselves or the Shun are attempting to surround that little Taiping region.

v216.png

The in October, great news was heard. It seems that the Empire of Japan, impressed with our current performance amongst the rest of the world, had seem fit to offer us an alliance. They would be our first in over 100 years, so the alliance was quickly accepted and King Bei was quickly off to visit the Japanese Emperor in his palace in Tokyo. Bei and the quickly became geat friends, and a promise of assistance in case of any future wars was ensured.

taisho.jpg

The Emperor of Japan when they sent us the proposal for an alliance. Records unfortunately have lost the name of this great man.

In November, an event occured in Euopre that would shake many of the old states to their core. The Germans, fed up with the almost endless fighting between the Bohemian and Burgundian states for dominance over the German people, have seen fit to hold what will be forever know as the First German Council in Paris. This has greatly upset the entire region, as representatives from all across the areas inhabited by Germans have been sent to Paris to take part in this Council. If anything, this council has shown the great desire amongst the German people for both political and social freedom, as well as their own Democracy on the continent.

v218.png

Several days later, the Second German Council in Paris was held. This time, they met to decide what course the German people should make for their own independence. A confederation was instead formed until such a time when a true German Empire could be formed. The King of Bavaria was chosen to lead this confederation, and the Danubian Confederation was formed. This is indeed a great day for the German people in Europe.

v219n.png

That same day, the Confederation became a member of the list of Great Powers of the world, and was attacked by Bohemia, the unofficial leading power in the former Holy Roman Empire. Bohemia was looking to cut down the Confederation to size while the Germans sought to bring about a status quo. Our King Bei quickly sent a large donation of money to the Confederation in their war effort, knowing that this would be the most noble course in such a situation. Bei as well being a great advocator of independence for civilised people all over the world.

v220.png

This was soon followed with a movement of our own troops. The newly formed Phillipine Garrison, composed of experienced irregulars from our war against the Ming, was ordered to move to the province of Liyushibi, an island only a few miles away from the nearest Tondo province. Tensions had been running high ever since the Colonial Disturbance back in 1836, and a possible border dispute was looking to be avoided with the existance of trained troops on the border.

It would seem, however, that a dispute would become unavoidable, and on December 28, 1839, the Garrison rowed across the channel separating the two provinces and into Tondo territory. It is hoped that this war will end with the occupation of all of their lands, and with very little to no casualties for our troops, seeing as how the Tondo are still equipped with spears and bows.

v223.png

As the troops moved across the channel, January saw a new change in the Upper House, once again, little change. Hopefuly this expedition in the Phillipines will see a growth in support for the Ruling Party.

v224.png

There was soon news from Europe as well. On the 8th of January, a peace treaty was signed between the Danubian Confederation and Bohemia, both sides realising that the war would be long and bloody and a status quo was achieved. May this truce between the two powers help to cool tensions and bring about the complete unification of the German people.

I will see what I can do, though I will only be able to fix the pics for Chapter 5 Unless you would want me to copy Chapter 5, and move it onto page 3 when it finally pops up?

I would take it more like a recommendation for future chapters :). I think that tomorrow I will launch the PC, let this page load, go make a coffee and then I will read chapter 5 :D.

E: Emu'd :).

I decided to take your advice to heart, and will now try to change the pics of chapter 5 to a smaller size, as well as keeping any future chapters in a smaller size as well. Working on chapter 5 pics as we speak.

I think you could use MS Office Picture Manager - if you use the right function (it is very easy), it turns you image to the 'right' internet size + it turns to jpg, so the real size is like 22 kBs then.

And your opinion on it?
BTW guys, im working on the next update now, just trying to figure out how to edit with paint and still learning to use MS Office Picture Manager

Just select, copy or cut, new picture, paste, save as png, upload to photobucket or similar site, link here, ???, profit!

And can't wait on the update :)

Chapter 6: Rising Tensions

As the new years of 1840 continued on, it become clear that the Danubian Confederation would not stand around to be reassimilated back into the Bohemian juggernaut. On the 18 of January, 10 days after they signed the peace agreement with Bohemia, the Confederation declared war on Switzerland witht he goal of bringing it into the fold of the Federation. It has long been argued by historians why the Danubian Confederation would have cores on the small nation of the Swiss, when the Danube River does not even flow into it.

Even with this hostile action, it was soon heard that the Confederation's placing amongst the worlds Great Powers was set in stone with the Danubians being placed at 6, knocking the hated Plantagenets out of the worlds high standing.

v24x.jpg

The year continued on with the Danubes facing fierce resistance from the Swiss, though not enough to cause any sort of halt to their advance across the Alps. There also came news from the splinter nation of Daxi, that the jungle dwelers of the Taungu had invaded, intent on taking the Daxi occupied Yunnan region. It seems that even with their initial success against the Ming, the Daxi are still weakest of the successor states of the former dynasty, already losing territory to the Shun in a recent war. But back in Tungning, on May 21 there appeared to be another bountiful harvest for our tea farmers, and the farmers were given permision from the King and Upper House to keep much of the surplus for themselves.

v25r.jpg

Our war with Tondo continued on throughout the year, as well as a continued expansion of our Navy and Army. Aside from these, however, the rest of the year of 1840 was uneventful except for one small detail. It seems that through the constant wars with the Burgundians and Scandinavians, the Malaccans had finally westernized on the 8 of December. Zheng Bei quickly sent his congratulations to this growing nation and offered the Malaccan King military assistance in any war for the liberation of the rest of the Malaysian Peninsula.

v26zd.jpg

On New Years day of the new year of 1841, celebrations were seen throughout the kingdom as the start of a new election was declared. For many, particulary in the liberated former Ming territories where elections were illegal, this would be the first time they would ever get the chance to vote, and so it is not surprising to know that this would be the single highest turn out of voters in Tungning history to this point.

v27r.jpg

The first debate for this election, would be over the issue of religion. It was a surprising choice, seeing as the populace was united behind a common and shared religion, but alas, this debate waould be about the role religion would play in the government's policy making.

v28p.jpg

The debate seemed to turn in favor of limited but none the less government involvement in religion, and as such only a small percentage of the populace seemed to turn away from religion.

Next came a debate over the ecomomic policies of the new government. Particularly how the government would interact with local industries, rather through an interventionist policy or a planned ecomomy one.

v29y.jpg

For a while the debate went back and forth, until in the end the supporters of Interventionism pulled ahead and were declared the winners of this debate.

The next debate for what would soon be a historical election was once again over the economic policies for each party. Each campaigning party was seen at this debate and it would be called the largest of this election, as well as one of the most heated.

v210.jpg

In the end, the Interventionists came out as the clear winner, using their success from the last debate in order to catapult themselves to the top. There were riots seen after the debate between the supporters of the Interventionists parties and those of the State Capitalists. Government troops were quickly called to the scene and the riot put down with a total of 13 citizens killed and 26 wounded.

Even with these recent riots, the world looked upon Tungning with envy at its fast technological growth and open freedom for all its citizens. A large influx of free thinkers and intellectuals from all across the globe was soon observed in the ports of Shanghai and Tainan, increasing the amount of scientists at our disposal to advance our great nation even further in science and technology.

v211.jpg

There was then heard of a great victory in the war against Tondo. On the 25 of April, the Phillipine Garrison engaged the forces of Tondo on the outskirts of their capital. After a battle lasting only 20 minutes, 75 of our brave troops had been killed, while the entirety of the Tondo force, 3,000 men armed with nothing but primitive spears and only a few archaic firearms, had been completely and utterly crushed. They were killed to the last man, and all hope for the war to end in peace were dashed from the thoughts of the Tondo people. Though the war would not officialy end until August, the remainder of it until then would be spent occupying the remainder of the Tondo kingdom, in order to enforce the will of King Bei.

v217.jpg

The territory acquired during this expedition is circled in red, with the Phillipine Garrison stationed in the former capital of Tondo.

The following debate for this election would be about the tariff policies of the current government, as well as those of the competeing parties. This debate mostly focusing on the impact of such tariffs on the local economy and population.

v213h.jpg

A general concensus was agreed to, calling for the tariffs to remain the same and with a growth in the nuber of supporters for protectionist policies.

The final debate before election day would be a break from the constant talk on the economy, and be about the immigration and employment of the nation. The past several years had seen a great jump in immigration, as well as a rapid changing of employment for much of our populace.

v214.jpg

That is a selection of the middle choice, not the one under it.

It was decided that none of the parties would attempt to rock the boat, as this was a very delicate topic, and a common policy of residency was agreed to.

On July 1, the elections were officialy closed, and it was shown that the current ruling party, the Monarchists, had received all of the votes and will stay in term for another 5 years. This election would also bring into office a new Chancellor, one that would seek to bring himself his own glory, not for that of his King. This man was Lu Si, and would play an important role for things to come.

v215.jpg

The next news was of a breakthrough in the research into Malthusian Thought in mid July. The great influx of thinkers and researchers in the previous months had brought about this new advance for the Tungning arts and so development was finally put into creating a new system of staff officers and a command hierarchy in the form of Military Staff System. Envoys were sent to Scandinavia and Burgundy in hopes that a system could be built off of their existing ones.

v216.jpg

There was soon terrible news however. It was heard that the nation of Aragon, struggling to keep up with the ever increasing industrialised nations, had fallen behind to the point that the vile Plantagenets had once again risen to the status of a Great Power.

v218.jpg

Tensions between our nation and that of Taiping had also started to heat up during this period. Numerous border skirmishes had been reported between troops from both sides, and it was clear that soon hostilities would break out officialy. Tensions continued to heat up, even as news was heard of peace between the Daxi and Taungu, the Taunge being successful in their endevor to reclaim the Yunnan region.

v219n.jpg

There then came joyous news from the Admiralty board. The modernization of the Tungning Navy had finally been completed with the successful completion of 5 home constructed frigates, 6 home constructed transports, and 3 foreign built man'o'wars. Tan Shu was given command of this modern fleet, as it was recomended that he would be an agressive admiral.

v220.jpg

As 1842 came along, there was, once again, very little change amongst the Upper House, Lu Si being very popular amongst the populace and so garnering much support for the Monarchists.

v221q.jpg

Soon after, the capitalists of our nation finished their first factories. This was a great boost to our economy, though Bei was skeptical of the choice of factories chosen by the capitalists. Effort was soon put into encouraging locals into joining these new factories, as they were quickly given government subsidisation to remain open. Plans began to be drawn up for a expedition to acquire the resources necessary to keep these factories open. Sights were looked towards the rich iron and coal fields of northern Korea.

v222x.jpg

There then came even more joyous news than these new factories. The disgusting Plantagenets had been kicked down from Great Power status once again, this time by the hands of the Czar of Muscovy.

v223y.jpg

July then saw another great harvest for our tea farmers. The census bureau will soon have to raise the average harvest level to help balance these constant surplus of tea. The farmers were once again given leave to take as much surplus as they could, for who else would deserve it?

v224.jpg

Soon, our focus on expanding and fully modernizing our Army was complete with the expansion of the Army of the Phoenix King and the New Model Army, and the recruitment of 2 new armies: the Ming Border Army and the Taiping Army. Preparations were almost set to repay the Taiping in full for their constant disrespect towards our rights on the mainland, and Bei began to sit down with his top generals for a war plan with Taiping.

v225.jpg

v227.jpg

Finally in August there came news from Europe, where the Danubian Confederation had finally subjugated the Swiss and had added a new state to their growing realm. It is hoped across the entire nation that this growing power will unite all of its people under its banner. There was as well news from North Africa, where the fallen nation of Aragon had put down the Algerians and set up a protectorate.

Your doing good, but you can still have a lot more brigades, thats cool that Danube survived, in my game it got ate up by Bohemia, then burgundy, but it fired a lot later in my version. Also, it was smaller and switzerland lead it which was strange. They should get wurttenburg. The ottomans also completely failed in their rebellions. When you become a great power you should make an alliance with them, if they dont have any allies they will probably do it.

I was surprised when I first saw they didnt get Wurttenburg but surounded it, hoefuly they will DOW it or annex it, make the borders nicer :D
And Foreign policy is where Lu Si will shine most when the time comes ;)

Very nice. I'm especially happy that the Danubian Confederation is uniting all South Germans under it's banner, though.

...Maaan I hope they beat the Bohemians up.

Also, any future plans against the other hated dynasties of China?

I've been waiting for it to happen as well, though it still bothers me that they weren't able to outright annex Wurrtenburg when they formed. They aren't in anyone's sphere and so should easily fall into the Danube's.
But more on all of that in the next update, which I may get up tomarrow or Monday U.S. time.
This time I probably wont use the MS Office Picture Manager, it just made the screeneis too small to easily see, so I'll just switch back to making them smaller on my own and hope for the best.

There are three options for SGF candidate nations when the first council fires; Leave Sphere & Gain cores for TDC, Leave Sphere, and Stay in sphere. Württemberg has therefore chosen for one of the latter two ;)

Actually, it has chosen the first option, because, like I said before, they are in no one's sphere but also have DC cores on them. They just aren't part of the DC and as of yet in this AAR, have not been conquered.
