Oh my, centralization coming up?

Sounds like some pretty radical centralization...but the thread did put the National Socialists in power.

Centralization? Where? Did anyone recently say something about it?

PS: Great update, as usual

National Socialists? Centralization? Where is this coming from?

Centralization, I can understand from the perceived 'Boom' that is incoming that it could function as a 'Burning of the Reichstag' moment and from the revising of the Constitution perhaps but ... oh well then that makes this make some more sense.

Poor Vasanta. He's had barely over a week in office, and people are already saying that he is a Nazi.

If you look back at the election update, you'll notice that 2 of the 4 candidates wanted clarification of the President's role - hence the changes to the constitution.

That said though, who knows what the future holds. For that matter, who knows what the past holds.

I'm very excited to see how your reactions develop along with the story. Frankly, I can't wait to write it.

PS - Thank you Mr. Santiago. Any feedback is always appreciated.

Fek, I'm having Withdrawals, I've been forced to read your previous MDS AARS (not that I'm complaining)
Don't fail me....Vasanta....-dies-

It's weird looking at my old ones ... It's true I don't have the best track record for finishing my AARs ...

Ah, oh well. You have two new updates to feed your addiction.

I can't put one up right now, but I'll update when I can.

As the lovers entered the train, Adam was uneasy. Why did the Colonel in him feel something coming on? His feelings were uncommonly wrong, but they had been enough that he had come to question them. He glanced around the train for signs that something was amiss. Everything he could see gave no credence to his conviction, but then the present rarely betrayed the future. He couldn't shake it as much as he tried. His arm, still wrapped round her slowly changed from the lovers embrace, to a protective ward.

His uneasiness was surely rubbing off on Rachel who began to look around uneasily as well. Neither of them could pick up on anything in the train car, or in the entrance. Those newly boarded were disposing of their luggage in the carrying compartments while the passengers were all reading or listening to music, or writing on their laptops and were blissfully unaware of the pairs concerns. One of them in particular, a young dark skinned woman of perhaps 25, with frizzy hair done up in a bun was relaxed and at ease to the point where she was fast asleep. The man across from her, an older business man with a golden Rolex wrapped round his wrist, was in fact glaring at her as she snored.

All of it seemed too calm. Almost too serene. Almost too perfect following his tour. And the silence while he looked around. It was more uncomfortable than the thought of a problem.

He stopped himself after a minute and turned to Rachel. Without a word, he kissed her forehead and then brought her chin up til they were looking each other in the eye.

"Is everything alright, Adam?" she asked.

"Everything's fine." he said, brushing some of her dirty blonde hair past her ear. "You know what it's like after a tour. I'm just a bit uneasy." he finished.

"Aww, I'm sorry." she said with a sympathetic face.

He sighed in agreement. It was a pity. It was always a pity. That damned transition period had no limit on the trouble it gave him. Of course, his feelings were not always wrong. In fact, more often than not he was right. It just seemed odd. They were in a train station in Madrid. They weren't in some field or grove in Novi Pazar, with bullets and gunfire ringing out around them. What could possibly happen here that would concern him? That he wouldn't be able to handle.

He decided to just put it out off his mind. He pulled her close to him as she closed her eyes and he rested his head on hers for a moment. In moments however he had to straighten up and the two carried on to their seat as a few people walked up behind them, heaving their luggage up the steps and speaking in a thick Cockney accent.

The pair walked through the aisle and down to their seats. B1 and B2 if he remembered rightly. Originally, they had intended to travel in Economy Class, but after being notified of his service in the military, the pair were unwittingly, and rather unwantedly bumped up to Star Class. As good as the perks were, neither of them wanted to stand out from anyone else. They didn't want to be recognized. They just wanted to be alone, together, now and forever.

The EuroStar, it seemed to him had undoubtedly grown in importance and Prestige since his last visit - at least, in Iberia. Here, the EuroStar had been passing through on spare time and could hardly be expected to make trips in the holiday season. Now, it seemed, he was sitting on the train in Paris, prepared to head out to Berlin, or London, or Amsterdam or any other of their 'premier' locations. The once clear windows were now tinted, with blinds and shutters dotting spread on them through the differing cabins. Cabins too, he remembered had never been onboard in Iberia. It had all been farther North.

"D1, C1, B1 ..." he read aloud, walking down the aisle. As he looked on the outside of B1, he noticed that unlike the others, striped dark blue and green curtains had been pulled across the door, so as to give at least some privacy. "Here we are." he said while he pulled the door open.

"Ladies first" he gestured to Rachel. She smiled and walked into the cabin, her child leading the way. Before following her inside, he took one last look around.

"Oh this is so lovely." she said from within. "Come on." she called to him with a giggle. He still couldn't shake the feeling. Why not? It was starting to annoy him now. No. He mustn't be annoyed. This was the first time he had seen her in almost exactly five months. He wouldn't spend it annoyed. Content with his resolution, he turned to follow her in when as he turned, he noticed a very familiar man running past the window of the EuroStar train.

The same young man from earlier, with tanned skin and the frazzled hair style, was running towards the steps now, coming up from the cabins farther back he assumed. As he turned, his denim jacket stuck slightly to his back, almost like it was glued there with sweat.

Adam turned into the cabin, ignoring his urge to chase down the boy. Inside, the two seats were a luxurious brown leather, looking brand new, as if they had been bought and laid out especially for Rachel and him. Maybe they had, but he doubted it. In the middle of the cabin, a wooden table was standing, it's optional wings folded out to provide the maximum surface area to hold the champagne, and the iced container in which it stood. A pair of glasses, shined and cleaned out stood beside the drink, offering themselves to him and to her. In between them, a brief thank you and congratulations note signed by the crew was present.

"Well it was a nice thought of them." Rachel said, smiling a little disappointedly as she ran her hand over her stomach. "You go on and have some, for the both of us." she said, her smile widening across her rosy cheeks, so full of life and joy, of warmth and love.

"I'm meeting with the President of the European Union to review a composition of Brigades and Divisions of the nations finest in Lisbon, and you suggest that I drink from the bottle?" he asked in an exaggerated disbelief.

"Why not?" she asked, leaning forward to rest her chin on one of her hands while the other rested on her stomach. "I'd say you've earned it." she added.

Although he had trouble going along with it, he couldn't deny her logic. He was no drinker, but he had always enjoyed a small drink, and for quite some time now he had been barren. Still, even a glass could not justify opening up a new bottle of Champagne. "I couldn't." he concluded. "I'll signal for the stewardess." he said, ending the matter.

"Alright, it's up to you." she said with a content smile. As much as they wanted too, they both knew that she couldn't partake with a baby on the way, and he was to be in a position that would need a clear state of mind soon. Even if he had earned a break.

He pressed the standard button, left most of three, above the door and it lit up. They were only waiting a minute. Maybe a bit less. But they didn't talk. Maybe they didn't know what to say. Maybe they didn't know how to say it. But, nonetheless, his mind wandered. He thought back to the young man, the scruffy looking backpack on his back. The backpack that had vanished as he had run back up the stairs.

"Ladies and Gentlemen" came the voice on the loudspeaker, "welcome aboard the EuroStar. All of our staff will do their utmost to assist in your comfort and well being on this trip to Lisbon. It is currently 7:41 on March the 11th. We expect to arrive on schedule, and without delay. If you would please put on your seat belts, we will be departing shortly."

"They're already late." Rachel mused, glancing at her watch. Adam smiled.

"You know what pilots are like."

"Pilots don't operate trains." she laughed.

"Pilots, Drivers, Conductors. They're all the same. None of them have a schedule other than their own." he said.

She smiled at him. He could never get over it when she smiled. It lit up his life, and nothing else could compare. Irresistibly, he smiled back. They were only smiling for a minute when the stewardess came to the door.

She was tall, and a little pale for Spain, but her dark brown hair was left to dangle around her shoulders giving her a slightly exotic look that, no doubt, made it easier to blend in with the locals. She had deep hazel eyes that felt a little bit like they were looking through him, at least to Adam. It was a little unnerving.

"Ah, I trust everything is to your liking, Mr. and Mrs. Templer. Is there anything I can help you with?" she asked. Maybe Rachel felt differently but it seemed to Adam as though she was talking like they had known each other forever. It seemed to be a common trend in the service sector.

"Yes, actually. We both really appreciate the thought you and your coworkers put into this, and it is really quite special, but-"

"But you don't want to risk the Champagne with a baby on the way?" she finished, smiling as he was trying to react. Rachel carried the conversation in his stead.

"Yes, thank you."

"No, don't worry." she said. "I would be the exact same way." she carried on while she reached for the bottle and glasses. "Well I hope that you both have a pleasant trip, and if there's anything else you need, don't hesitate to ask." she finished with a smile.

A slight lurch forward and the a ping from the aisles indicated the start of their journey. As the stewardess left, the door slid closed behind her. Through a crack in the curtain, Adam could just see the station begin to roll behind them.

"Was I just interrupted by a Stewardess?" he asked in disbelief. There was a brief silence as the two lovers slowly began to laugh at the fact. Sunlight peered in through the curtain after a few moments.

Rachel moved her mouth to speak, but no words came out. From the far end of the train, a rolling explosion burst forth from the rugged old back pack, left behind by the young man who had so rudely bumped into Adam and his pregnant wife. It started first small but quickly grew.

knowing21.jpg

By going off further back in the train, and now that the train had started its journey, the explosion tore easily through the train car as the C-4 was detonated on a timer. The compartment shredded as the explosion enveloped the cars ahead of it, behind it and careened off the station floor and ceiling to envelope the platform, and the train next to it. The explosion, for a moment perhaps, grew weaker as shrapnel of steel scraps and industrial nails, coupled with bits from the train car, flew in all directions.

The secondary explosion was however, the bigger of the two and it quickly tore through the ceiling above to engulf a section of the main floor. The rolling shockwave traveled both back and forth, knocking the first few cars off their tracks or sending them crashing into the ascending car. Farther down the line, Rachel and Adam could feel the train shift and be violently knocked out from the station to slide along the train tracks. The massive blast from the explosion shattered the windows of the train in a wave of destruction as the wind blew past the train cars now in the center of destruction.

The window beside them had, thankfully shattered outwards as Colonel Templar jumped into action. With Rachel in tow, he hit the deck as fast as he could. A roll out from the seat into a ball on the ground offered the best protection he hoped, though the door shattered in the wave of the blast. The window in the aisle too was shattered and scattered across the floor as the lovers hid underneath the table. Screams were now erupting from across the train as a piercing ringing was all that Adam could hear. His vision too was wrong. Things were blurry and out of focus as he tried to prop himself up off the floor.

Rachel was lying there too with him, tears rolling down her face with bits of shattered glass resting harmlessly on her side. She had no cuts or bruises that he could see immediately, but nonetheless a steady stream of blood was running down her face as she began to scream in a panic. He didn't have time to console her. He could hardly hear himself, and he knew she was the same. He pulled her closer to him, noticing only as he brought her nearer, the blood running down her face was his own. Shattered fragments of the door had embedded themselves in his arm. It wasn't critical, he could tell right away. But it was excruciating nonetheless.

From the floor of Cabin B1, he held Rachel. Trying desperately to console her. Trying desperately not to berate himself. Trying to focus. Trying to clear his vision. Trying to stop the ringing in his ears.

Trying to explain the sudden explosion erupting from a train on the other side of the station, and trying desperately to avoid the realization of the third explosion, erupting from the main floor of the train station itself.

Oh my gosh......
Talking about a bang....
Damn that Liberius and his efficiency!
(I'm assuming the Russians paid the Arabs to do it ;))

At least all that money spent in the EuroTrains was well spent.. Is it customary to pamper members of the militia like that or was it because Templer was traveling to meet the Pres. and was thus considered a VIP?

Also, I'm eager to see a certain *cough* Senator *cough* gone berserk after this attack...

It is customary in the European Union (in this ATL) to grant benefits to members of the Armed Services. Reduced university/college fees for their children, reduced prices on air travel and seating in first class, free rail travel across the European Union, good health benefits, good retirement benefits.

They grant a lot of perks to the men and women who are laying their lives on the line. Something which nations around the world should do more of. In this ATL EU, people are much more appreciative of the work and risks taken by those in uniform, the country itself having been born less than a decade before hand thanks to the combined efforts of many of those individuals.

I'll see if I can get out an update tonight or tomorrow, but I'd love to hear what you guys think of the last few updates. They've been longer than the others I think and I'd just like some feedback and suggestions on what I can improve on.

I personally don't see that much to improve on. Your combination of political discussions and real-time storylines (all those agent stuff) hits the spot. I've rarely seen this perfect a combination for an AAR. Probably the only part that you might build on is showing what's going on in other parts of the world a bit more. I'm interested as to what kind of countries your modded ones are like.

I concur with the previous guys, as a more general panorama would be handy: even though little time has passed since the start of the history (in game terms) all of the recent events must surely have consequences abroad.
Regarding the 'live action' parts, they are really neat. They have a certain 'thickness' and sometimes I do have to re-read bits to fully grasp the situation (English ain't my native language), but they surely deliver the images; there are certain action parts were time actually seems to slow down as multiple and fast-occurring events take place and are thoroughly presented!
The later posts have some large sections of text that are closer to a book than to a message board, perhaps you could add an extra picture here or there to relief the eye and make reading smoother.
I do hope you consider this as only constructive criticism; all in all, keep up the good work!

The writing is excellent, I couldn't stop reading until the last line, and then I found it a shame the update was finished already :p. Nevertheless these updates are fine, as long as you keep posting those maps on the situation in the world, alongside the stories of the different characters :)

"And as you can see, Libyan forces are massing along the Tunisian border. Despite the economic incentives he's been given by President Bush, and by the now out of office President Kohler, Moammar Qaddafi is readying his forces for a complete conquest of the country. We suspect that this is merely a part of the rivalry in the region with Egypt." Joseph said, clicking to a new slide in his presentation for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. A few of the faces around the room turned to face one another. The rivalry was nothing new. If Qaddafi was trying conquest as a new means for Regional Prestige however, then the situation had a drastically improved potential to be explosive.

"Pictured here is the latest of the Egyptian home-produced line of Main Battle Tanks. From the best information we have, it seems that they have been collaborating with the Jordanians, and even with the Israelis. Our sources have not been able to verify our suspicions that the Israelis have shared information we gave to them with the Egyptians but it remains an unwelcome possibility." He turned to look at the tank briefly. He had seen the picture before but it was important that the Joint Chiefs get a good look.

The tank looked remarkably similar to the M1 Abrams Tank. It had a long smooth bore gun, and a square shaped body. The shell like turret was fully capable of spinning around completely to face a threat from any direction. A small rectangular black box was also jutting out from the base of the cannon, no doubt housing thermal and night optics while accounting for modern range finding assets.

"We believe that it has also incorporated elements from the Merkava tank in conjunction with the Israelis. All together, it has produced a fearsome weapon in the Egyptian arsenal and to our best guess, Libya would have no answer to the Saladin MBT if it came to open war."

The Under Secretary siting on the far side of the room scrunched up his face in confusion as he pulled another candy from its wrapper and tossed the tin foil shell back into a bowl with a half dozen others. Joseph couldn't recall how many he had seen the man eat by now. They had only been going for an hour. The African division of the CIA was unusually low profile and mismatched compared to the others. Where as other briefings were filled with Generals, Admirals and Diplomats with years of experience, the African briefings seemed to be filled with low level civilian officials who reported to their higher ups on the news out of the forgotten continent. Today it was the usual assortment of officials. Disinterested and lazy obese masses with little capacity to make up their mind on anything, unless it was not to waste their time by informing the President of something he ought to know.

Most of them did have the courtesy to where a suit. Usually. Although it was almost always the same one. The Under Secretary himself was wearing the same grey suit from last week, with a mismatched dark blue tie, and a white shirt that still had the stained splash of coffee from when he had recoiled after taking a sip from his drink three weeks ago.

07282008_godzilla.jpg

The Under Secretary on his way to the meeting.

"Saladin? What's that?" he asked in between chews.

"The Tank is designated the Saladin, Sir. He was a famous Muslim King. He fought the crusaders under Richard the Lion heart-"

"Richard the what?" He asked pausing only momentarily before he shook his head. "Never mind. Just tell me if it's a threat that I need to tell the President about."

"Realistically Sir, we believe that it would be capable of inflicting casualties on American forces if confronted, but our forces should be able to handle it."

"Good." he said. "Saves me and the President time then. Continue." He said with a wave of his hand, like some overfed and lavishly dressed King from times gone by.

Joseph took a deep breath and reassured himself that someday this man would be gone, and the African division might amount to something other than a joke. "Beyond the Saladin MBT, and the impending Invasion of Tunisia, there is some concern within the division about growing European influence on the continent. We are already aware of several high profile trade and mining agreements procured by the European Government and by companies that we know are government shadow corporations. It seems that -"

"The Chinese are doing this, correct?"

"Yes, Sir. That's why-"

"And the Russians?"

"Yes, Sir as far as we can tell. From the best information we have, they are funding Militant groups and Regimes opposed to ourselves across the continent. They have set up what we think the Europeans have called the Axis of Africa. This is a secret network of alliances between Libya, the Congo, Sudan and Angola. We believe that they are trying to bring Morocco into the organization."

"Why does this interest us?" the man asked in contempt.

"Because this network is devoting funds to revolutionary movements across the Continent. We can also confirm for a fact that they are receiving industrial and military resources from both China and Russia in exchange for security agreements and promises to stir up trouble on and off the continent. We know for a fact that they have been funding the Brothers of Islam in Somalia, which has already claimed much of Mogadishu, and that they have been funding the Nigerian Revolutionary Front, combining Socialist and Islamic Political ideology to some extent to attract the lower classes and Islamic hardliners to the organization. We suspect that they will announce their presence soon. In the North," he fumed, weeks of pent up rage with the mollusk of a man coming out in a litany of information an briefings condensed into a rant.

"In the North, the Islamic Combat Group under Khaled Al-Assad has just set off a trio of bombs in Madrid that are sure to provoke a military response from the new European President."

"Let them kill each other. What does it matter to us?" the man asked.

"It matters to us, because we have been competing for Moroccan loyalty by giving monetary packages and loans to Morocco. At our last briefing I informed you that we thought some of the money was being misused. We now know that portions of that aid was being diverted to a bank account owned by the ICG."

"And? We didn't misuse the money, and didn't you tell us, all of us-" he said, gesturing to the men around the table "- that it was the Russians who were funding them?"

"I also said that the Russians had been shifting their aid donations to other sources and that we weren't sure what to make of it. I can tell you now that someone in the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service has shifted the paper trail from their Service, to ours. They have linked American Financial Aid abroad, to possibly the most deadly terrorist attack on European soil in years."

"We may not have planned it. We may not have had anything to do with the attack, but by trying to buy the loyalty of the Moroccan King from the Chinese, he and the FIS have been able to implicate the CIA in this attack."

The room was quiet. No one was sure what to say. What could they say?

There was one thing.

The Under Secretary on the far side of the room slowly leaned back in his chair.

"I need to speak to the President." he said under his breath.

Morocco.jpg

Dmitri Taylor stood in the corner of the dimly lit room. The thin sheets of plastic, unrolled and sprawled across the open window were enough to let in enough light to see, but not at all too much. He took another glance around the room in his boredom. The walls were bare and of the same sandy colour that for all he knew could have been mud bricks or a sandy concrete that had built the house in the first place. The Moroccans weren't exactly renowned for their decorating habits, as he recalled. The floor was practically the same, save for a few carpets rolled out in the middle. The middle of the room however was not bare like the walls, or like much of the floor. In the middle of the room, a camera stood on a tripod, facing a man backed into a corner near the window, letting in just enough light to see his face.

"Allahu Akbar." came the weathered and low pitch voice from the man with a short and well kept black beard, and closed eyes. His skin was dark, and wrinkles and scars criss-crossed his face. He was clad in a long robe of charcoal black, with a black turban wrapped around his head. Unlike the other men who Dmitri had seen in his time in Morocco, Khaled had some of his hair draping out from his Turban to hang around the edges of his face. When he spoke, he did so in Arabic. Clearly and concisely. His voice rang out in the room as his eyes opened, a brilliantly dark brown, commanding Dmitri's attention.

vlcsnap2010081421h38m03s175.png

"Today, three bombs were detonated at Atocha Station in Madrid. This is but a taste of the vengeance that shall be wreaked upon your lands. For decades, you have butchered our people. You have raped the land, and stole it's children." he said, bowing his head slightly and closing his eyes. Dmitri looked long and hard at him in what was only a brief silence. He wasn't sure, but he thought he could almost see a tear forming in the corner of the man's left eye.

"You have defied the almighty and your inaction against the false Republic, the false Caliphate is proof of your incompetence. What should never have been, has come to pass. What should not be allowed to continue, goes unpunished. If you will not take action to right the wrongs you have made, then you will be punished for them." He said, his voice growing hard, and his eyes fiery.

"The Black water that you covet has betrayed the world. Those to whom you pray to keep you safe, are false. Your world is a fantasy, and it must be brought to a close. All those who know the truth, will confront you. All of us who have lost, will confront you. All of us who have bled, will confront you." he paused as his breathing grew shorter.

"May you find Mercy in the arms of the Almighty, for you shall have none on this Earth." he finished, closing his eyes, and bringing his hands from his knees together in front of him in what looked to Dmitri, like a Christian stance rather than an Islamic one. Without pausing, Khaled Al-Assad brought his head to the floor and set his palms down in the traditional Islamic prayer stance. He stayed low for several minutes, whispering to himself as another man in the room came, this one dressed in combat gear with a golden turban wrapped round his head to cover all but his eyes. The man, an AK-47 draped over his back switched off the camera and stood before Al-Assad with his head held low.

When Khaled came back to sitting up straight, he looked at the new man with steely eyes and a stone face.

"Your Eminence, the time has come to leave Morocco." The man said with a young voice, heavy with an Egyptian accent.

So I'm hoping that I'll be able to get a more worldly update soon but Africa and Asia will see a good number of updates for the next little while. I might make some trouble flare up elsewhere for good measure, but I am starting to miss Reynald de Burgundy ... he'll definitely be back soon.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I'll work on getting some more pictures and showcasing some other viewpoints from different nations. Hopefully, Morocco and the USA today will do a little bit to sate your appetites.

I'd pay to see the fat Under Secretary's face when he informs the President of the coming shit-storm.

Now, the proverbial rock has hit the pond; we shall see where the ripples go.

That sir, was a fantastic update.
I simply cannot wait to see how well you cover the actions of the other parts of the world, if you carry on writing their point of view this well.

Also I'm loving how you used the Mayor from Godzilla and Salah Ad-Din from Kingdom of Heaven, did you purposefully mention Saladin to put his image in there?

My my..... Things are really going to be interconnected on the near future.

And I'm just getting warmed up.

I'd pay to see the fat Under Secretary's face when he informs the President of the coming shit-storm.

Now, the proverbial rock has hit the pond; we shall see where the ripples go.

That would indeed be one amusing and rather horrifying conversation.

Thanks!

The Mayor of Godzilla sort of happened to come up. I was remembering the briefing from the Hunt for Red October as inspiration, when I realized that the Mayor fit the Under Secretary.

As for Saladdin, I was actually imaging him as more of the bad guy from Body of Lies at first, but as I wrote him he became more like Saladdin in Kingdom of Heaven. Also, interesting fact, I realized only after writing this that Saladdin was born in Tirkut, Iraq so technically that Tank should be in the Repulibic of the Crescent.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how many maps I can put out. I've migrated the game to my laptop, and It won't take screenshots via F11 or anything. Is there a program I can use to solve this? Is there a program that can take screenshots, or can I disable my laptop hot keys momentarily while playing the game?

I doubt the Republic of the Crescent would want to use a Kurd as a figurehead, which he is. Probably better off keeping it on the Egyptions, either way there's been a Saladin armoured car before and that's British...

Fraps might work for screenies, either that or you'll be stuck doing Print Screen + Paste into Word or something.

I use FastStone Capture as a screenshot tool (great for the AGEOD games were there is no in-built system). You can take it for 30 days trial, then the freeware version just allows you to do full picture prints (ie as F11), the full paid version allows you to take partial images and to annotate them and edit them as you take them (but then you can always do that in an editor in any case).

That sounds pretty good, I bet it's more useful than not being able to screeny stat windows with the HOI2 screeny button.
