    [FINISHED] Apocalypse 1836

    ZomgK3tchup Proudly Presents
    APOCALYPSE 1836
    A Victoria 2 AlterVicky
    VERSION 3.0.1
    For A House Divided 2.31

Banner borrowed from a game of the same title.
And because banners are cool, and everyone's doing it.

Are you ready for the zombie apocalypse? Are you this guy? Probably not. So how do you think you can lead your 19th century colonial empire through the apocalypse? Sometime in 1836, there was an outbreak of the mythical Solomon Virus – a highly infectious disease that turns its victims into mindless zombies. These zombies began their horrific assault on human civilization, and you and your people were the only thing standing between them and the extinction of the human race. What? You don't remember that? Maybe it's because you haven't played APOCALYPSE 1836!

Okay, enough cheesiness. Onto the good stuff.

    Features
    • A new rebel type, Zombie.
    • A new government type, State of Emergency.
    • Event chain to simulate the spread of the zombie apocalypse.
    • Event chain to simulate your ultimate victory… or downfall.

    FINAL IMPROVEMENTS
    • Immigrants prefer democracies, even if they're in a state of emergency.
    • Immigrants are half as likely to go to a country that has zombie outbreaks.
    • Immigrants are three times as likely to go to a county that has suppressed plague outbreaks.
    • Once you defeat the zombie hordes, you can choose to life the state of emergency or declare yourself absolute monarch/dictator of your country.
    • If every nation falls, the zombies will starve and leave you to pick up the shattered remains of civilization.

    Zombies
Zombies WILL swarm your provinces. Once occupation is complete, the zombie plague will spread and more will rise. When a nation falls, the zombies will cross the border and attack its neighbors. To combat these creatures, it’s best to bottleneck or isolate them and then lay siege in large numbers. Never attack if their hordes are larger than your armies, and never, ever, let them take your capital.

    State of Emergency
A state of emergency will suspend your nation’s elections and allow you to appoint a political party. Also, certain decisions and events will be unavailable until the state of emergency has been lifted. Be warned, once you declare a state of emergency, you cannot lift it until your home provinces have been liberated.

    Spreading the Solomon Virus…

The Solomon Virus will spread under the following circumstances.

    • It will spread from province to province...
    • Between neighboring nations...
    • Between the Old and New World.

NEW! The zombie plague will spread from China to Japan, Denmark to Iceland, France to Madagascar, the United Kingdom to Oceania, and the United States to the Caribbean.

There are some countries, such as Hawaii and Sokoto that will remain zombie-free because of their lack of neighbors and general isolationism.

    Fight for Survival
Losing the apocalypse means the ultimate collapse of civilization. This will occur if almost every country in the world loses its capital to the zombies. Likewise, the traditional Great Powers have special events to simulate the fall of their once mighty empires.

    Screenshots
Here are some screenshots from my test game between 1836 and 1840.

    It begins in Denmark...

    The plague arrives in Bristol.

The British Empire declares a state of emergency.

The British crushed the outbreak in Bristol and secured the home islands. But India, however...

Collapses into total chaos. By 1838, the British are holed up in Bombay, Calcutta, and Delhi.

A victory at Calcutta secures Eastern India... for now.

    Meanwhile, in New Zealand.

The Army of Calcutta moved to Jessore to combat an outbreak. Unfortunately, the zombies entered Calcutta, and the stronghold fell.

The Army of Delhi wins a devastating victory in the north... but is it enough?

The British entered Belgium when the Dutch attempted to invade in 1836. The war ended a year later when zombies entered Holland. The Army of England then fought hard for the next four years to keep the zombies out of Brussels and slow the inevitable invasion of France. By New Years 1840, however, they are surrounded in Brussels and cut off from supplies...

And thus Central Europe falls to the zombie onslaught. India and Argentina met a similar fate.

    Special Thanks to...
The Age of Colonialism Team whose events were an invaluable reference.
The Vicky II Wiki and OHGamer who complied a list of commands, effects, and scopes.
The Zombie Survival Wiki which I used as a base for flavor material.
Slan, whose HOI3 mod was my inspiration for this.
And especially, Rylock who answered all my random coding questions.

Comments, questions, and concerns are appreciated. This mod is fully playable!

Oh yeah, it's also mod directory compatible.

    Wacky.

Something to consider, just for fun: add a victory condition to the rebel type if the zombies completely occupy a country for a year. Set a flag on the country, and then add a separate event that turns the country into terra nullius.

It would be nice as a revolter country that appears on the first outbreak. Like the Alienattack cheat in hoi

    That's why I asked. ;D

Right now, the zombie victory condition doesn't exist. I was thinking of adding a siege victory that will sometimes turn the captured province into terra nullius and then a total victory condition that will randomly turn the majority of a country's provinces into terra nullius with specific zombie victory events for the Great Powers.

    Very interesting idea.

A terra nullis event would be nice. Then, healthier nations could push into territories formerly taken by zombies (with colonization), reshaping the map (and potentially causing tons of core-fighting after the outbreaks have subsided).

Would there be events or stuff to make coalitions against the zombie threat (or ways to intervene against the zombies in other locales, even if they aren't close allies)?

That's the plan, yeah. In addition to the terra nullius events, there is an an option (already finished) to use your emergency powers to change your government type (declare yourself king, found a fascist dictatorship, etc.)

I'm not sure how I want to work coalitions. I was thinking (a) creating a custom CB that can be activated if a nation is overrun by zombies, (b) creating a decision for a nation to ask for help to the major GPs if overrun, and (c) a random event that gives a Great Power military access and an alliance with an affected smaller nation. The first will be the more violent approach and if the war is won, the overrun country will have the zombie_outbreak country flag replaced with a "zombie_outbreak_liberated" flag, pay some serious debt to the liberator, lose random colonial possessions to the liberator, and possibly become a satellite. The second would create alliances and give military access to the major GPs and then once the zombies are gone, another would fire that removes all that. The last would be identical to Britain's Diplo-Annex event; it would be triggered by the appropriate event flags and/or high militancy and/or number of revolts, and the Great Powers get military access to that country. The big issue with the last two is that I don't want to be playing and be suddenly swarmed by events about helping weaker nations; to this effect, I might require them to be a greater or secondary power. Anything weaker can just be bullied with the CBs.

Right now, my priority is terra nullius. I want to get that working and then I'll move to the coalition stuff.

The infection spreads to neighboring countries. Britain and France are connected by the Channel Islands. I was thinking about doing quarantines to override this and stop infestations via event, but I'm not sure if 19th century nations were capable of putting their entire countries on lockdown like that.

Also, I couldn't have done that. This mod only edits text files. That looks like a cache and/or map issue.

I like the idea. Sort of a cross between World War Z and War of the Worlds.
I am assuming where the plague begins is randomly determined (within certain limits), or will it always begin in Denmark?

Will the zombies faced in 1936 (for example) be the same as the zombies faced in 1836 (but more numerous) or will they develop or evolve in any way? Will victory for the human player be largely by researching new military technologies? What will you do about the poison gas technology, I don't think it is possible to have attack bonuses against certain unit types unfortunately.

    Some other thoughts:

-How about a decision to intentionally spread the virus to one of your human neighbors, with the chance of BB gain and prestige loss if you are discovered and the risk of accidentally spreading the virus further through your own nation.

-Decisions to change your nations level of isolationism and quarantine (with certain requisite technologies). You can choose to adopt various degrees of isolationism and quarantine which will decrease the chance of spreading to your country for the former and between your provinces for the later (but still leave a significant chance since this is Victorian era technology and communication) but this will have increasingly severe effects on your economy and foreign relations.

-A bit more outlandish, perhaps a Victorian era XCOM-like organisation/nation with their base somewhere like Easter Island and events giving them powerful anti-zombie units and money of they keep favour with various nations by defending them against the zombie threat.

-Some sort of zombie or doomsday cult religion develop and spread through events

I'm willing to help out with the project.

I read a lot on World War Z before I wrote the flavor for this, and War of the Worlds is definitely an appropriate comparison. I want something that starts with the devastation of the world and then the eventual reconquest of civilization, with varying levels of success (the OP, for instance, showed a game where Britain successfully defended the home islands but was quickly losing ground in Europe and India).

It is randomly determined. However, it cannot occur in your own country or a country with less than three states. I may exclude Sokoto from this as well since it neighbors no other country and is landlocked.

Right now, zombies gain organisation absurdly high so that they will rise quickly. I plan to create inventions that will decrease this effect as the game progresses.

By default, rebel grow stronger with the country they originate from. If you research machine guns, your rebels will eventually get machine guns.

In the far future, I may include another type of zombie that is "smart" (doesn't attack fortifications, tactically retreats, etc), capable of recruiting leaders, and won't be trashed by late-game units like tanks and planes.

The virus spreads fast enough that by 1837-1838, every country in the Western world should be affected in some way or another. It takes roughly a month for the virus to spread from a neighboring country to another and about three months for it to spread to countries without any neighboring nations (Japan and Madagascar, namely). I may increase this value, however, since it was mostly for testing purposes.

Province to province spread, I decided, is handled by the zombies themselves. When they occupy a province, it automatically becomes infected. However, I will probably re-add the province event that spreads the disease to a neighboring province (with a slightly higher MttH). Then I'll work on isolation and quarantine.

Isolation will be difficult because the AI will enact it immediately or not at all. I want a minimal amount of isolationist countries, so I may restrict it to the following conditions: be a Greater Power or uncivilized, the Great Powers are all infected, and you are not. More than likely, you'd have South America, Korea, and Japan go into isolation, and I'm okay with that.

Quarantine would work by decreasing immigration and emigration but setting a flag that prevents the province to province spread from occurring (or slows it down considerably). This modifier would then be removed if zombies occupied the province.

I'm not sure if the AI can handle this. The preferred method of ridding your nation of zombies is to park a unit in a province which has been infected. After a month or so, you will get a province event that removes the disease modifier from said province. I may add a reverse spread event for the virus as well - one which gets rid of the province modifier if the province is not controlled by zombies and there are no zombie units in it for X amount of months.

As of now, the ground work is done. After I add some more spread events and outline the victory/defeat conditions a little better, I'll be able to take you up on your offer for help. Though, I do plan on creating an event that adds forts to provinces with major castles, fortresses, or colonial fortifications; since zombies use neither cannons nor rifles, large walls and towers would be especially effective in defending against them. Or so says World War Z.

No! You want to spread the infection to DVG???

I think if you ask the OP kindly to adapt the few files that are overlapping, it will work. (before he adds the country-specific events)

Btw, the idea is absolutely amazing.

I just tried the 0.5 beta.
According to the event the outbreak started in Russia, but within a few months I am seeing zombie rebels throughout Europe as well as Central and Southern Asia.
I thought there was meant to be one initial outbreak and they would spread out from there through province events or by occupying provinces. Is that wrong or is what I am seeing a bug?

Edit: Playing as the UK, in October 1836 the plague reached Carlisle in northern England, my first province to be infected, despite the nearest province with the zombie modifer being Antwerp and there being no zombie units in England.

Edit 2: Second game; the plague started in the UK home isles despite myself playing as the UK. Zombie outbreaks are also occuring in South America early in 1836.

    This. Sounds. Fantastic.

I'm particularly fond of the idea of provinces being turned Terra Nullis by the zombies. Very nice.

Also, harrr. Zombies in Divergences. The lolz.

Edit: I don't suppose it would be possible to make some sort of...Anti-Zombie Pact between nations? I imagine that if, say, Austria fell to the undead that Prussia or Russia might form some sort of pact in order to intervene.
