Question regarding the strategic effect "Norway-Sweden iron." Apparently I need to have relationships with Norway >50. How am I supposed to do this? They have no significant amount of metal (or any other resource) to trade me anyway, and they don't want my supplies. Do I need to have Norway under Axis control and thus fulfill the alternative requirement?

Until FTM comes out, I wouldn't bother invading Norway. The minor amount of resources/MP you get doesn't offset the campaign losses and numerous divisions you will need to garrison the long coastline (just the ports mind you). You can trade Russia/Sweden for all the ore you need. I find that by late '40 I am maxed out on Steel through production, trades and conquest. And don't forget that if you are helping China out that you get a 15% bonus to resources.

Once FTM comes out with the new production material and strategic rares I think invading Norway may be part of the German strategy again (mine at least).

How come my Super Heavy Tanks dont fight, always instant defeat with both sides loosing 0 units.
If you put just SH Tanks into battle, they will lose, because to actually fight, there needs to be a width greater than 0. If I am correct, SH Tanks are a support brigade with a width of 0, so they need a combat brigade (L.Armor, Armor, Motorised, Infantry etc) that they will support. Otherwise, they will always retreat.

I think podcat had two ways of downloading the f patch because so many people were getting download errors on the big zip file. Look for the three rar files instead to download, and then un-rar them together after the three downloads are complete. I think he has instructions to help with this.

Yes, I ended up with both.

my checksum was correct when I was using 1.02, but now I'm getting "ZUDG" and I don't think its right. Its just before the war and the Herman Göring Division is no where to be found :( I'm also missing the Assault Gun brigade, which I loved dearly - such a nice support brig to add to my Med. Panzer Div.

EDIT: Ah well, guess I gotta reload. So awful with Steam as I have to reload the whole thing. You'd think I'd learn and copy a back-up folder (hehe).

2nd EDIT: When running HoI3:SF 2.04f I get the checksum of IDXF, which is what I'm supposed to get - what am I doing wrong?

2nd game with Brit superstack on the Channel Islands. The AI seems to use it as
a staging base for invasions. I had dropped a German para on it at max range hopeful
to find it empty but it had about 16 HQs and divisions. I was so disgusted i saved the
game, restarted as Britain and disbanded all the Brit units (no worry for the UK as I don't
intend a SeaLion, my eyes are on Moscow for 41). Good for them as i pumped alot of
MP back into their pool anyhow. Now i hold the Channel Islands. I hope this is addressed
in FTM and stops popping up.

The superstack shouldn't be happening, Semper Fi fixed superstacks. It's probably a very rare bug as I personally have not had in my past ~20 Semper Fi games (but I had it every game in vanilla HoI).

@PCWGamer: AFAIK Vichy France is supposed to have its mainland inherited by Germany somewhere late in the war and then Vichy France will join Axis with its colonies (altought mainland will now be owned by Germany). I don't know if there's such an event in DiG, but if it doesn't allow you to invite them, then they will most likely be brought in throught an event, so don't worry.

There is a decision chain for this. The USA have to execute the decision for operation torch, after that Germany will get the "Case Anton" decision.
However, to allow the "Operation Torch" decision either Gibraltar or Suez must be in allied hands on Nov 8, 1942. At that point the Italians usually have taken Suez, even if you don't help them in Africa, so you have to ignore Gibraltar until then.

By the way, is there a specific USSR Bitter Peace event that adjusts the borders like they would have been if Germany won? Because right now I'm having massive success againist USSR, but sadly a major part of the front is occupied by Romania (my dumb threatre AI sent the troops to fight from Romanian territory, but my troops didn't do the work alone, there's combined Hungarian, Romanian, Italian and Bulgarian forces fighting) and I fear if there won't be the pre-set borders then Romania might get a large part of USSR.

EDIT: There is, nevermind, not sure what happens if Axis minors control most of Soviet VPs, thought.

Bummer then, because I just took Gibralter in May 41 as I did not know this. Same for Suez. And now Vichy is heading fast the other way on the diplo screen due to Axis Japan taking all of their colonies in Asia per event. Guess I will just have to invade them now if I want the areas, but I will remmember this for the next game.

Thanks for helping me understand this Ricox and Ulsterman!

Bugs, observations and feedback

Hi Devildread

Managed to play 1:03 all the way to November 1939 now, so I thought I'd give you some more feedback on how the game is doing.

I am having a problem with Romania, but I am not sure that is DI:G's fault :p

BUGS in DI:G
When I finally get to order my first Super Heavy Battleship, the unit name in the production screen is simply "SH BB 1" :(

Subs on convoy raids loose ALL their org in about 6-7 weeks of raiding? But even though they are on Passive mode they do not retreat to port to get their org back? Is this WAD?

When the German-Soviet Trade Agreement event fires in August 1939 there is a reference to a strategic effect, which does not show up in the list of strategic effects. So you agree without knowing what the effects are. Only afterwards do you get a pop-up saying that the effects are -5% money, -5% supplies and +5% resources. It would be nice to know that before making the choice ;)

Observations and feedback:
Subs convoy raiding seem very effective still. In the first month of war my 4 MR SS and 2 LR SS sunk 83 British and French convoys and 3 escorts! I was just about to pull them back to port to avoid destroying the UK's abilities in North Africa and Asia when the War of the Atlantic event fired. That made me keep them on the high seas and I can see in the Diplomacy/trade screen that the UK is running with a (small) deficit of everything but rare materials :D

Pocket Battleships have been a huge disappointment as surface raiders I am sorry to say. I have stationed 1 in the Carribean, 1 off the coast of West Africa and 2 in the Gulf of Aden thinking that they would choke off convoys from India and the Far East. So far the PBB off the coast of Trinidad has sunk 1 convoy in 8 weeks, the one off West Africa has sunk 3 (French) convoys and the 2 PBB's in the Gulf of Aden have encountered NOT A SINGLE convoy despite sitting in a bottleneck where 2/3 of the British convoys should be passing through? I am not sure whether PBB's need to have their convoy raiding or spotting adjusted but so far I don't think they are working properly. At least they are no fun alternative to subs as I had hoped.

If you go ahistorical and get Nationalist China into the Axis, the Soviet Union still gets the event for Operation Zen and support the fascist anti-comintern Chinese. I understand if you don't want to produce a completely new set of ahistorical Sino-Soviet events but this particular one seems rather unlikely?

On a possitive note, giving the Nationalist Chinese "strong support" has made them able to push Japan back into Manchuria and beyond by the summer of 1939 :p (but only after Japan annexed Communist China).

The game mechanics concerning the Strategic Effects "Norway Sweden Metal" and "Oil from Ploesti" are, IMHO, not working as intended. Romania cancels trades so frequently (including trades for metal, energy and supplies) that it is practically impossible to maintain 100 relations. I don't mind tough, but there is no reason to have it as an option if it is impossible.
The Norway-Sweden Metal is broken in the same way: Norway won't buy or sell anything to get relations above 45. But what's worse: As Germany you don't NEED this strategic effect. In my game I had good relations with China and NO metal imports, not even from trade with Sweden or USSR. Yet this way alone and after annexing Austria and Czechoslovakia as per usual, I have 99.999 metal by the summer of 1939. I am drowning in metal and I don't think I will ever get so much industry that metal from Sweden/Norway will ever be "vital" to the German war economy. I have posted a suggestion for this below. :)

I'D REALLY LIKE:
PBB's that do better at convoy raiding

For Nationalist China to be able to break their non-aggression pact with USSR when they sign the Anti-Comintern Pact and/or join the Axis powers.

In order to make the Strategic Effect Norway-Sweden Metal important to the German war economy again, there needs to be a much greater shortage of metal. I would suggest:
- Changing the bonus from Sino-German Agreement to affect Rare Materials only (or Rare Materials and Crude)
- Reducing German home production of Metal
- Increasing the amount of metal it takes to produce one IC (if at all possible)
- Perhaps introduce some metal stockpile-reducing events in the game

As always, thanks for a great game and keep up the good work!

:) Jesper

the Channel bug is new to me too with SemperFi as well. I am not using the
beta patch and am using the Vorwarts Panzer mod and altered the motorized
artillery as they showed a soft attack of 2 (!) added 10 to that but that is part
of the mod i believe. Worked at least demobilizing all those pesky Brits on "my"
island! lol!

I think I have encountered some kind of super weird bug. The paternal autocrat party's popularity and organisation are SKYROCKETING, the tooltips claim that all that support is because of spies, but this has been happening for the past 2 years and I've ALWAYS had my spies on counterespionage, but they have NOT A SINGLE TIME detected ANY paternal autocrat nation doing "support our party", nor has any nation doing this action been SO successful at improving org (+6k!!!). I checked every week or so in the caught spies tooltip and simply nothing popped up about paternal autocrat nation spies doing anything. How to fix this bug other than editing savegame to change org/pop? Or perhaps there is some kind of paternal autocrat nation with 83186181678136861871638169716802477280872896207% spy efficiency?

Have you annexed any countries, where the ruling party was paternal autocrat? If yes, it might be because their internal spies were not deleted, and were on support ruling party mission. Since for them the ruling party is paternal autocrat, they keep supporting it. I edited the saved game to delete the annexed country's spies, and the problem was solved for me. If you annexed multiple countries like that, than the number of such spies could be well over the maximum 10. That would be the reason they are so effective.

@cmdr DK

I was a bit iffy about the introduction of poket battleships into the game. Essentially they turnd out to be crap. Their concept was that they could outgun anything they could not run away from. Great idea, sadly it was not true...

What we so very easily forget with the benefit of hindsight is that no-one had expected ww2 to pan out the way it did. In particular the Nazi's never believed the British would take much part in the war and it never really factored into their planning.

Pocket battleships were designed, like the grossly undergunned BC SCharnhorst and her sister, to fight the French. IF that had turtned out to be the case then they would have been fine ships. It did not, and everyone knew they were totally unsuitable for fighting the RN... Indeed they stand out, like the rest of the Nazi surface fleet, as a complete waste of resources and incredibly ineffective in the role they were designed for.

Devildread, could you give me a link to a place where I could upload the savegame to? It doesn't look like this forum section has the possibility of attachments.

@Opanahsc, could you point me out where are the places I could remove those spies from? I have annexed USSR (Bitter Peace, half of USSR), Austria, Czechslovakia, Sweden, conquered (GiE) Norway, Greece, Yugoslavia, France (Vichy France still exists, thought, it's mid-'42), Saudi Arabia, Oman, half of Yemen, British colonies in Middle East and small portion of British Isles. I'm not sure that any of the annexed nations are paternal autocrat, thought.

I spent more time with this mod than with the Vanilla. It is great!

Some remarks:

- You have no interest in changing the horrible and historically incorrect starting condition of the Germans in the 1941 Barbarossa scenario (or give Paradox a commendation to to this)?

- I don't like the connection between sinking convoys and national unity. I cannot see there any sense. On the other side -in my opinion- the national unity must increase when I conquer Capitals or collect a thousands of Prisoners of War.

- For a better feeling as DESERTFOX can you give Rommel the command over the two Italian Corps in Easter Lybia. It is horrible to fight in the desert with independ acting Italians and this make the fun out of order.

- Maybe this is a SF problem and not yours: In my last 1939 scenario
1. the "French AI" send after my attack more than 100.000 soldiers to Dschibuti (in preparation to fight in the future against Italy).
2. I called Italy to arms (when my troops reaches the suburbias of Paris): Italian and GB have a Showdown on Sardinia: 28 Italian against 17 British Divisions. And it looks not good for the "descendants of the Romans" ... Maybe in DI:G I should never called anyone to arms?

- I like the special units: Please give us more!

Thanks
Drusus

Opinion on DIG and need advice...

@DD & DangVang,
You guys hit it a grand slam, Honestly, it's great! I'm playing with the VWP_Panzer mod and which makes it even better. I

I need some advice... from some of the good players here. Sadly, I am not a good player/general.

1. Is invading Norway even worth it? Seems I totally wreck my Navy trying to keep sea lanes open for supply, committed 2 corps of Mountain Infantry which could be better used else where and have to supply by air sometimes - all this for very little return. I think assets could be better used on the French front. Advice/Suggestions?

2. My Subs were tearing up the shipping lanes when all of a sudden the tables turned and I was lucky to get any of them back to a safe port. Scared now to put them back to sea. I was using basic tried and turn tactics (1 sub @ Passive performing Convoy Raider) with much attention paid to research...most all research up to 1943. Whew! What happened and how do I counter it because their life expectancy is less than a few weeks out there now.

3. Interceptors and TAC bombers... I have followed many discussions on what is the best stack (amount) and thought 6 INT or 5 TAC was optimum but now I am not so sure. It appears that by putting my INT in stacks of 3 they last a lot longer; however, doing that with TACs gets them shot to hell in a hurry. Was there any changes made in DIG that might affect this? What is the optimum stack for INTs and TACs now?

4. Big question: Is there anyway to stop the RN (includes the Common Wealth) when playing Germany? (still banging my head over Norway and looking for something I missed...)

Regards,
Rick
