The New World Order: A Chinese Cold War AAR

The New World Order - A Chinese Cold War AAR: 1950 - ?

    Version: DH Full 1.01B3
    Scenario: 1936
    AAR Start Date: October 1950
    Difficulty: Normal/Normal
Tech Team/Full IC Take Over: Yes/No

This AAR was never originally intended to be - I was playing a game as the Soviet Union, and upon ending World War 2 with a user created peace settlement (I don't trust the AI to finish Japan off any time this century) a very interesting geo-political situation emerged, similar to the RL Cold War, but at the same time quite different.
In order to see what happens between the two nuclear-armed power blocks, I will play out this game to its conclusion (1964, or if things are still happening at that point and I don't neglect this thread, I will edit the end date) as Nationalist China. This will be a gameplay/story AAR, but with an emphasis on gameplay, as I'm a useless and uncreative writer.

    House Rules
    1) Have fun
    2) Write an interesting AAR
    3) Based on 1) and 2), I will cheat, load up as other countries, edit saves and do whatever is necessary to fix bugs or move the story along, as this will be a boring AAR if the AI goes to sleep and spends the next 50 years stroking its shiny new missiles and pulling funny faces at the opposing powers. If I do anything in this manner though, I will be honest and open about it.
    4) Don't talk about Communist China
    5) Don't talk about Communist China

First updates covering the general history of the game so far and the situation circa Autumn 1950 should be up tomorrow. And sadly, as I didn't intend this to be an AAR I am a little shaky on the exact details of WW2, but will do my best to remember and describe.

    Enjoy!

Following Never really followed China AAR's as I just figured it would be them trying desperately to modernize in the face of a Japanese invasion. But yeah, following

Talk about the Reds all you want, but from an in-game point of view, there are very good reasons why the Nationalists would want to supress talking about their communist bretheren up North.

    Prologue: America

    North America

While largely spared the horrors of the war that engulfed the world, North America did not emerge unscathed. The Canadian Army suffered crippling casualties fighting alongside their British cousins in the Middle East and Persia in the defense of the Empire. The American Army, suffering from their lack of exposure to the full horror of 4 years of trench warfare in World War 1, launched an expedition into the Balkans to knock out some of Germany's allies from the war, march on Berlin and aid the Russians on the Eastern Front. While the quickly moving American columns quickly overwhelmed the tiny garrison forces left in the Balkans by Germany and her client states, a combined Italo-German offensive made use of a temporary halt in Russian activity on the Eastern Front to destroy the American Force. This left the Americans able to only mount small invasions of France and China later in the war, due mainly to the loss of material in the Balkans.

    South/Central America

This area remained largely peaceful except for a few notable exceptions; long range Japanese transports, guarded by advanced submarines and a suicide squadron of surface ships, evaded lacklustre American coastal radar, and landed troops in Panama, quickly overwhelming the small American garrison in the canal zone itself, and arresting the government of Panama whose Army was almost entirely located in the USA receiving training before being due for transport to Europe.

Luckily, America's Southern allies responded quickly, preventing any Japanese incursions into Colombia. Another Japanese squadron landed troops in Haiti, overthrowing their government also, only to be cut off from their supply lines and crushed by the Army of the Dominican Republic. Likewise, Japanese troops in Panama were slowly attritioned away and were unable to receive reinforcement due to the negative military situation facing Japan.

Panama regained their independence, albeit under a US backed government, while the Dominican Republic under Trujillo governs the whole of Hispaniola.

The only other fighting took place in the Peru - Ecuador war of 1941, which was won comprehensively by Peru, who run an ineffective repression campaign, with insurgents spread throughout the North tying down military funding and personnel.

    Prologue: Western Europe

For the second time in 50 years, Europe was utterly ravaged by war, and its nations suffered conflicting fortunes. In 1937, the Nationalists in Spain crushed the Republican government, implementing an Authoritarian Right-Wing state. In 1940, the Wehrmacht rolled through the West destroying the armies of the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium and France.

France officially surrendered in Winter 1940, and were allowed to keep and administrate a large section of their nation by the conquering Germans. In the spring of 1941, in exchange for receiving the return of a large section of the Atlantic coast, the French state went to war once again, this time on the side of the Germans. In 1943, in exasperation of the lacklustre French war effort, the Wehrmacht rolled into Vichy and arrested the government, putting all of France under German military occupation.

Other early action took place in Norway, when a quick initial German victory was surprised by a British attack on Narvik, where a combined Anglo-American force of over 100,000 men landed and dug in before the Germans could react. This was a major turning point, as it cut off Germany's iron ore supplies from Sweden during the frozen winter months. Neither side could take the advantage however, and the front remained static until the last weeks of the war.

Iceland also changed hands numerous times during the conflict: initially they were occupied by the British, but a skilled German commando attack killed or captured the British garrison. As the war turned against Germany, and Allied navies cut their supply lines, Icelanders joined forces to spring the captured Brits from their camps and overwhelm the German occupying force, declaring their independence in 1943. Officially, the new state was at war with both Germany and the Allied powers, but on the evening of Germany's surrender, British diplomats flew out to Reykjavik to rubber stamp a peace treaty.

Now, with the world finally at peace, Europe can rebuild. The state of play in the West is as follows:

Iberia: A British attack from Gibraltar in the last year of the war liberated Spain and Portugal from their right-wing dictatorships, installing British backed democracies.

France: Due to unwilling support of the German war effort, and the quick loss of their colonies, the French spent 41/42 beefing up their industry, which was further buffed after German occupation, in order to keep it out of the range of Soviet bombers. Upon German surrender, French politicians who escaped the Nazi advance of 1940 were returned to Paris to set up a new administration, presiding over an economy almost as strong as that of Britain.

Lowlands: Belgium and Luxembourg were both restored to independence under US backed democracies. The Dutch government-in-exile returned from England.

Allied Occupation Zone: With the establishment of a Soviet client state immediately after the defeat of Germany, the Allies quickly set about forming the Federal Republic of Germany, a free democracy, with over double the industrial capacity of the GDR. Allied troops remain stationed in Austria due to it being the last bastion of mainland Nazi resistance, with bandits still wandering the countryside.

Scandinavia: The Norwegian government in exile returned to the country. Sweden remained neutral throughout the conflict.

Italy: In the last 6 months of the war, as Soviet troops marched ever close to Berlin, Vienna, Prague and Belgrade, communist rebels in Italy assassinated Mussolini and in the chaos of impending defeat took effective control of the majority of the countryside. With the US entry into Milan and the complete surrender of the Italian military, the rebels set up an official state with Soviet backing, covering all territory the US army could not reach before the proclamation of the Socialist Republic of Italy. The North remains under US occupation, in the hope of eventual peaceful reunification, or a democratic state being set up.

    Prologue: Africa

Britain and her allies quickly eliminated the colonial forces of Portugal, Spain, France and Italy, restoring the Emperor of Abyssinia to his throne (and handing over Italian Eritrea to the reformed nation), while placing almost the entirety of Africa under British Imperial rule. Whether they can hold onto this territory in the face of a blooming sense of African Nationalism remains to be seen. The Liberian government was forcibly removed by French troops during 1941 and handed over to the Italians. Those who still remain have not yet made it back to Liberia, and their nation lies in ruins.

French troops in Madagascar officially surrendered to local resistance forces, who immediately appealed for US aid. US troops were landed shortly afterward at the invitation of the government, and a decision on aid shall be forthcoming.

On a slightly different note, how easy is it to edit savegames to change province details, such as IC and infrastructure? I may want to do this to simulate one of the superpowers handing out aid, but am not entirely sure on how to go about it, and I'm more comfortable editing savegames than writing events.

    Prologue: Eastern Europe

Eastern Europe did not escape the destruction the West suffered. The Nazi campaigns through Poland and the Balkans in 1939-41, combined with the apocalyptic Eastern Front against the Soviet, and the American Invasion of Greece caused widespread chaos and havoc. Eventually, the Red Army triumph, and rolled through Eastern Europe, setting up a full complement of client states along the way.

However, things were not totally rosy for the Soviet Union. Due to a resource shortage amongst the Eastern Bloc states, Stalin had to relax some control over the government of these nations so that they could trade with the west for sufficient materials to run their industry. Likewise, although Germany was split into two halves, the GDR suffered the most destruction during the war, despite not being hit by any nuclear weaponry (Dusseldorf was targeted by the Americans as the first usage of nuclear weapons) while also having less than half the industrial capacity of their western counterparts in the FRG.

Partisans were also a problem; ex-Nazis, bypassed soldiers, Nationalists and non-communist resistance groups still operated in the newly conquered territory, and it would take quite some time and effort to pacify them.
    Notable resistance pockets include:
    a) The Hungarian Republic, in Uzhorod - Escaped troops from the failed American Balkan adventure hooked up with democratic/right-wing partisans in Eastern Hungary, and upon the exit of German forces from the province, they rose and declared a republic. The United States declared that any attack on their troops in Uzhorod would be an attack against the USA itself. So far, the Soviets have been busy elsewhere, and the new Communist government in Hungary is keeping a watchful eye......
Similarly, several Greek islands are still under American military occupation.

    b) Partisans in Eastern Romania - after being liberated by the Americans, only to be re-subjugated by the Germans, then by the Soviets, large resistance bands have gathered in Romania, and are currently camped out in the North-Eastern mountains around Bacau and Iasi. Too strong for the weakened government and industry in Romania to defeat, and with the eyes of the western world on the Soviet Union, it remains to be seen what the outcome for these partisans will be.

Finally, Soviet troops accidentally overstepped their markers in Austria, moving into Hollabrun province to chase after fleeing German divisions. In response to American support of Partisans in the new Eastern Bloc states, the Soviets have not handed over administration of this province yet.

    Prologue: Finland

After losing territory to Russia in the Winter War, the Finnish entered the war on the side of the Germans. At the point of entry, Allied forces occupied Northern Norway; however, the Finns were contemptuous of their ability to move and fight through the sparse wastes of Northern Finland. Unfortunately for them, the British had learned their lessons from the first winter spent in the freezing mountains of Norway, and several divisions split up into small groups and infiltrated into Finland.

Not seeing this coming, Finland had left only police and minimal border guards in Lapland, instead concentrating on the Soviets in Karelia. Initially their attacks were successful as the Russians moved troops south to deal with German attacks, and the Finnish army captured Murmansk.

This quick advance cost them dear - British troops had captured Petsamo, as well as large sections of Lapland, and could resupply their troops by air and sea. Combined with a successful Russian counterattack, the Finns folded quickly.

The Russians quickly instituted a Communist government under Otto Kuusinen, forcefully shipping all captured Finnish soldiers back to territory controlled by the new government, far away from the British controlled areas to prevent desertion from the socialist cause.

Having captured Murmansk from the Finnish, and having seen Soviet military coercion first-hand, the British government steadfastly declined to pull their troops out, occupying Lapland and Murmansk for well over 5 years. The Soviets, unwilling to provoke a diplomatic incident and with bigger fish to fry, left things alone. But with a victorious army, and a growing navy, it is high on the agenda to recover an essential port.....
