Chapter 1 - A New Beginning (1836-1838)

The world in 1836

New Bruges, the year 1836, and the Seven Republics have elected Jacques Lahure as their president. The people have spoken, Lahure will lead them into the future, into greatness. President Lahure decided that research should be directed towards the theories of Chemistry and Physics, and has started improving education through better funding and promising better jobs for the educational sector.

Sadly, due to a fire at the Bureaus de Dossiers, many records have been lost regarding the first three years of his presidency, and not many can be reported besides written records. One important document was saved though;

War1.png

The declaration of war against Vinland to obtain land that is rightfully ours!

It is now 1839, and the war has been won. At one point, President Lahure returned into active service and led an occupation force straight into the capital city of Vinland, and when they won the siege, the war was over.

Westward expansion was President Lahure's personal mandate during his first term, and he has promised to continue expansion in the forseeable future. So far, the army has been expanded, plans have been made to improve the navy, and the industry is being kept afloat, despite a complete hands-off policy towards the factories, through import subsidies. Also, the Bureau de Dossiers has been rebuilt, and it is to be expected that it will record history while it is being made!

Chapter 2 - Legacy of Freedom (1839)

President Jacques Lahune's last year, was peaceful yet eventful. The third army corps was trained to completion, and four new commerce raiders were issued for construction, as well as a new naval base near the capital of Nouvelle Bruges. Lahune's militarization was not met with much opposition, except in one of the recently retaken regions from Vinland.

The end of February was met with good news, technologically and diplomatically. On the 23rd, Medicine was discovered and research was next guided towards improving the military and the tactics it employs.

Techstart1839.png

A mere five days later, on the 28th, mainly due to our prestige-filled war against our northern Viking decendants, we ended among the ranks of the greatest powers in the world.

President Lahune saw to it that the national budget was to remain positive, and instead of rolling back most taxes, decided to boost the economy by giving capitalists the means to build more factories and better subsidizing the import of goods, Tariffs went from +25% during the war to -17% at the end of 1839. Spending on Education remained high, and army and administrative spending was heightened also.

The health of the Republics economy when it rose in status in February only got better during the year

Railroad1839.png

Railroads were being layed down nationwide at a breakneck pace, and the navy was expanded heavily near New Bruges

events1839.png

Throughout the year, more and more unhappiness among minorities was reported.

When the Republics were at war with Vinland, there were some fears that the Plantagenets to the south would make use of the situation and invade. Luckily, a letter sent by an anonymous member of Congress, managed to persuade their monarch to instead invade Gran Colombia, a nation that consists of the remnants of Spanish rule in the new world. Reports coming from that war seemed to be one-sided in the favor of Plantagenia, despite spy's reports that the army strength favored the Colombians. Most likely because the country is too big for the monarch to control, they offered a white peace to their adversaries, much to the dismay of President Lahune. Only 9 days after the war ended, on the 20th of November, did the Gran Colombian assembly send an offer of alliance to President Lahune, which got accepted within Congress without much opposition.

Congress was appalled, but not much can be done towards European nations at this time

Ever since the war with Vinland was won, the nation was captivated by its imperialistic tendencies. The people felt they had the right to obtain a "Destin de Manifeste", to extend their Legacy of Freedom in the new world. Even though many subjects in Plantagenia desired to join the Republics, the monarch would not let go of what he saw as rightfully and divinely his. Therefore, President Lahune decided to fund a colonization effort. The retaking of New-Scandinavian land had opened up possibilities for safe and unhindered passage to the west, and colonists had already started packing up to start afresh once again. And, when the snow lay on the streets of New Bruges, and it was almost Christmas, news from "la frontière" reached the capital that Terres-Rouges was now officially a part of the Republics.

Finally, New Years Eve came and went, and the country would be engulfed in the coming elections. Was Jacques Lahune to hold the Office or would a contender step up and oust him out of the Presidency? Liberal sentiment had grown steadily the past few years, would it mean a difference to the presidency? Will Lahune be remembered just for his Legacy of Freedom, or for much more? Only time will tell.

And so it begins...

As this is my first AAR, any suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated, as well as some ideas on how to continue on could be incorporated if I deem them satisfactory :p (by no means is this interactive ;))

Get those people to your South. They seem... untrustworthy.

Nice to see a Seven Republics AAR.

Chapter 3 - Noir et Blanc (1840&1841)

1841Lahune.png

President Lahune during his second term race
The election of 1840

The presidential race of 1840 wasn't really interesting, and went pretty much as expected. Jacques Lahune, running for a second term representing the Parti Conservative, was up against Harvard T. Shardin representing the Parti Patriote, and Jean Beaucomp representing the Parti de la Nation. In the first half of the campaign, economy was the main focalizer of the race, but it swiftly got ousted by debates concerning the military. Some of them got quite heated, but in the end President Lahune got elected for his second term.

Don't be fooled by the percentage, popular vote was about 65% in favor of Lahune

Foreign Affairs

For at least the past decade, the world has been in a perpetual turmoil. Many wars were fought simultaneously, and before they all could end new ones had already started.

1841Russia.png

Many wars ended in the shifting of provinces between nations

Notably, one of the countries involved in the wars had a distinct goal in mind, and pursued it with extreme zeal. This country was Muscovy.
The Russian king, the still young Alexander Romanov, had started a campaign of unification among the Russian Slavics. He had been very successful so far, obtaining a lot of provinces from both Novgorod and Crimea in recent years. Then, on the 28th of May 1840, with one month left for the Presidential Campaign, Alexander became Tsar Alexander "The Liberator" Romanov of the Russian Empire.

1841Russia2.png

The declaration of Holy Russia made by Tsar Alexander, and the Tsar later in his life

As part of a doctrine that was envisioned in the late 20's, President Lahune had started appealing towards the other countries in the New World to form a block against Vinland and Plantagenia. In the summer of 1840, the first successes were booked, as one by one, each country's relation with the Republics improved to Cordial

1841Cordial.png

The former Spanish, Japanese and Chinese colonies, as well as the Kingdom of Hawaii were being influenced.

Overseas groups from the Republics are being repressed.

Research&Technology

After the heroic victories of the Septima War of Liberation from Vinlandish Tyranny, ideas about how to upgrade the military started circling around. Scholars used President Lahune's tactical prowess he showed in the siege of Erikshavn to determine "The Command Principle".

1841Command.png

The University of Philippa had been insisting to start theorizing about Idealism, and since it had a substantial influence around the nation it was no surprise that they received the funding necessary from Congress to make it happen.

1841Idealism.png

Turn of the year

Towards the end of the year, the Seven Republics had seen a large surge in growth. This was partially due to inventions made and discovered within the field of Medicine, but there was also a decent flow of immigrants coming towards the New World. Congress decided to hold a census and these were the results:

Another reason to start a war we cannot commit to

Destin de Manifeste

May 8th 1841, it was a beautiful Spring day on Isle de Longue, and the President was enjoying the weather with his family when news reached him from the west. He had been planning something grand, it would change the face of the New World as we know it. And the first step was made when reports from the Colonization efforts reached the capital.

Mississippi Supérieur, now part of the Seven Republics

1841Friendly.png

Influence was continuously expanded around the New World, and culminated in the Treaty of Sanbao, an Alliance between the Republics and Qingqiu

The plan had been drafted, the Seven Republics were to go to war against the Plantagenist usurper. Three seperate army groups were to invade and occupy enemy lands, so that later our rightful core provinces could be taken back from the evil one. The navy was to sail around Venetian St Augustine and blockade the main ports in the south.

The plan, developed by the top generals.
Stars represent the main goals of domestic forces.
The western arrows indicate expected, but ultimately unnecessary reinforcements from Gran Colombia and Qingqiu

1841Iberia.png

The recent Iberian War ensured the lack of European intervention

All was going to President Lahune's plan, he would spearhead the advance into Plantagenet territory, and it would all commence on the 1st of January 1841.
On the eve of the war, and the new year, the impossible happened. Lahune was forced to postpone the attack, and instead opted to await for the situation to resolve.

1841Congress.png

Gran Colombia's Congress to determine its future

Will Gran Colombia remain one state, able to back the Republics claim in the near future? Will President Lahune sit idly by or will he go ahead as planned regardless? Will the face of the New World be changed forever? Regardless the outcome, the Seven Republics stand firm.

the evil that is Plantagenet must be wiped off the face of the world :D a disolusion of grand columbia will just make it easier for you to take them over in the future ;)

Chapter 4 - La jouissance de Nouveau Bourgogne (1842-1844)

1844firstuh.png

The upper house was not yet influenced by events in Gran Colombia

The New World was in turmoil again, not because of war, but because of nationalism. The Congress of Andagoya would be held, and nobody had an idea about what outcome to expect. Postponing his plans would be disastrous on the economy, at least that is what President Lahune believed, so on January 31st he stood before Congress to make his final speech before heading south.

1844war.png

February 1st, troops cross the border. Also foreign reports concerning the war.

Two weeks into the war, General Fallon had the honor of the first engagement of the war, in Saint Raphaël. Losses were minimal, as it seemed this force was merely a drafted group of locals, given arms to defend their own area.

1844fight1.png

16th of February, a glorious day

It wasn't until July that the the main army of Plantagenia decided to show up. It settled itself in the mountains around Roanoqué, awaiting the right time to strike. General Fallon had studied Sun Tzu's Art of War, and knew that the best defense was a good offense. Therefore, communicating with Lahune's forces in the field through runners, they planned a joint offensive, using a pincer move against the army of De Cocq. Early August they struck.

1844fight2.png

This pincer movement has since been taken up in regular officer training programs

1844fight3.png

The army was routed and eventually every last man was either killed, wounded or captured.

1844fight4.png

During the war, a botanical expedition was sent to the African continent

1844fight5.png

The Plantagenian army finally surrenders to General Fallon

In the west, the colonization efforts were still ongoing. Envisioning a grand nation in the New World, on August the 14th another region was rightfully added to the Seven Republics.

1844colony1.png

1844seconduh.png

1843, and Liberals are steadily gaining support

Sporadic small armies were continuously monitored and apprehended by Republics forces throughout 1843, but on the technology front a breakthrough in Idealism was discovered in late March.

1844research1.png

The use of cavalry by Plantagenia inspired new research directives

1844fight6.png

Vinlandian unrest, and one of the brigades apprehended

Over the years, reports from Asia had been steadily arriving in New Bruges. Apparently there were many small scale struggles going on. But the biggest news came in 1843. The former hordes of Genghis Khan had been overthrown by one of the Chinese factions fighting for the dominance of the area.

1844Chinese.png

There was also positive foreign news. The nations of Hawaii, Qingqiu and Kita Kaigan were added to our sphere of influence. Also, another region was colonized succesfully!

Newly issued street signs when 1844 rolled around

Then finally, after almost two years of fighting, President Lahune received a communiqué from the Plantagenist Monarch. He was willing to relinquish the land we claimed to us, as long as we left them in peace thereafter. Lahune was certainly satisfied, as all the terms he had sent to Nouvelle Orléans during the wars had been met upon in the treaty. It was signed and the war was officially over! Throughout the nation, the 25th of January was celebrated extravagantly.

1844botanical.png

Good news everyone! We have discovered a new type of plant!

1844research2.png

For science!

We had almost forgotten. It had been going on since before the war. But on April 22 1844 the inevitable happened. The Congress of Anyagoda had failed horribly, and the South American nations split up. In a weird turn of events, Mexico tried to enforce their dictatorship on the north, but this was not met with happiness at all. Quite on the contrary, many more cultures split from Gran Colombia. The face of the world had changed forever.

1844congressresult.png

The once mighty Gran Colombia, liberated itself from Spain, was now reduced to rubble

The world in 1844

This is actually very interesting. I shall be following.

So is this set in an alternative world where it became a Francophone planet?

Not quite. In this timeline, the Burgundians continued to back the English Plantagenets in exchange for a guarantee of Burgundy's independence. The Plantaganets won the Hundred Year's War, and the Dual Monarchy of England and France was established (The giant, blue blob of France and England). The Kalmar Union held, which is why there is a unified Scandinavia. Ming China's explorations continued, and they founded a colony on North America that became Qinqiu. They also lost horrifically to rebellions and the Manchu, which is why China is fractured. Austria never inherited Bohemia or Hungary, thus the HRE is dominated by Burgundy and Bohemia., and Muscowy never unified the Russias.

...Phew, now that's been explained...

Lovely AAR! It always brings a smile to my face when I see the Seven Republics whomping Plantagenia. I am also pleased as punch to see Gran Columbia dissolve completely. It should make your dominance of North America much, much easier.

I'll be following this.

i dont even know how to comprehend venice being able to send ships to colonise america XD
should be an easy grap anyways if he can beat plantagenia quickly again so that bohemia doesnt get to it
