While it may seem that we are sacrificing a potential economic boon to our country, the depression extends across the globe. By demanding reparations from Britain and France when they are not prepared to repay them, we force them to choose between crushing austerity measures or abandoning their repayment efforts entirely and straining trans-Atlantic relations.

Regarding Secretary Harrison's concerns, I would not propose to put any kind of pressure on Britain to bring it to the negotiating table. Their participation in the negotiations is optional, as is France's, as an alternative to direct repayment. I will defer to his expertise on government finance, however, and suggest that the negotiations (and possibly the loan repayments) be put on hold until we have achieved economic recovery.

And now I express my deep sympathies in this crisis.

The banking act should never have been passed, it was a fuse which set off a bomb best meant to be carefully handed and diffused. Indeed, it is irrelevant now, we are in crisis. The private sector has no incentive to hire workers, there is no demand for their work. Money is not being invested into private enterprise, it is simply sitting in the pockets of our frightened citizens. There is no reason to believe the private sector will pick up soon enough to keep our consciences clear, and thus our only solution must be to empower the public sector to spend the money the private citizens wont.

But Socialism is not the answer.

I cast my vote for Horshington in the Republican primaries.
