Hmm... I knew I should have changed that sentence. I simply meant that it looks like they were successful.

Not to mention, this one's too big to have been created just in the post-war years. It winds right back to the end of the last proper downturn in the late 90s.

((Which in turn will lead to countless debates about whose fault it is...))

((Which in turn will lead to countless debates about whose fault it is...))

I'm extremely torn between weeding through the reasons as thoroughly as possible to avoid those debates, and having a more interesting election where you're all just working with the info at hand, like in an actual election that's held in the middle of a nasty downturn. Yet I'm afraid that nothing short of a miracle could stop that election from getting the thread temporarily locked, or worse, considering the economy brings up such heated feelings, especially now that it's a major real world issue in an election year.

I was asked prior about my intentions on how to deal with the economy. For the moment, in our boom, I merely suggest increasing taxes to bring us back to running at a surplus. The economy is booming, people are wealthier than ever, they can afford these taxes. Besides that, I will not put any pre-emptive measures to prevent a depression. Any measures done before a crash can only cause panic in investors and the populace. Instead, I simply wish to give our government the money it needs to act when necessary. Should this nation crash from our historic boom, I would operate in the utmost of my abilities to reign in the economy from further sliding out of control.

Extensive increase in public spending to mop up the unemployed, keep crime low, and put money back circulating.
Temporary preventive checks on banks to prevent major runs from collapsing our system.
Temporary closure of the stock market to prevent the same.

More specifics will only be necessary should the economy actually falter, which like my colleagues I hope will not happen. But optimism is no excuse for not preparing for the worse. My Republican opponent will only put the government in a weaker position to fight back from a potential economical collapse. I will put the government with a stronger hand.

We cannot let the economical system collapse, but this requires some sacrifices from everyone, and a new understanding of how we need to treat the Capitalism of this nation we all hold dear.

I do not pretend that I am in a strong position to trounce the current Republican stranglehold on government. I myself have been a Republican among them, cheering for freedom from tyranny after the Great War. But now is not a time for blind economic freedom, it is a time to prepare.

If Mr. Sherman follows my economic rainy day plan, we will certainly be in a strong situation for the crash; having economic controls will not help the situation, only exacerbate it. However, you are probably the best Federal candidate since Daniel Vallejo, who also championed a generally free market.

Governor Taggarman, you may have missed it, but I believe you have not answered my earlier question about your stance on the Jim Crow legislation.

((Which was as follows; "I understand that the progressive party will be running on it's usual anti-Jim Crow stance, but will the Federal ticket, with the governor of Texas at its head, be following suit? I ask this question of Mr Taggarman, given that the Federal party has, for as long as I have know it, been a party of high moral standing."))

Apologies, I missed that question Mr. Mccahill. I am both personally, and publicly, against the continuation of Jim Crow legislation. One of the reasons for my exit from the Republican party would have to be the surge of those in support of these anti-American legislation.

Jim Crow is a scourge on this nation, and it is our moral imperative to provide equal freedoms to all. Freedom with fraternity, not separateness. In terms of how I would combat Jim Crow, I would do my best to subvert the States, but ultimately this needs to go to senate.

((I just finished reading through this ENTIRE AAR, and made an account to join, are you accepting new members?

((Everyday, that becomes more and more of a feat, largely thanks to long-winded speakers like myself; but Seek is right; feel free to join us! Bonus points as a Republican! :D ))

Okay. I'm calling it.

Polls are Closed.

The Republican Candidate will be John T. Sherman.
The Federal Candidate will be William Taggarman.
Patrick Ryan will run as an Independent (Progressive).

Send full platforms to me ASAP.

I call on all Anti Jim Crow Republicans, those who know it is morally wrong, to consider the power you give the lobbyists who have entered our former party. Furthermore, I call on all Republicans who fear economical collapse to consider a government with temporary, not permanent, power to combat a depression. I will provide balms to alleviate both ails.

If any Republican wishes to run as my VP this election, please contact me, it will be mutually beneficial in the long run for all parties to have a government which transcends party stance. I do not consider my government Federalist, I consider it the party America needs right now, a mesh of multiple ideologies, mixed to form a government capable of protection both the individual, and industry.

So please, contact me if you wish to have a VP spot to bridge our parties.

The Presidential Election of 1929

The National Conventions of 1928 proved to be simpler affairs than usual. Both major parties settled on their candidate rather easily; the Republicans on the incumbent President, and the federals on William Taggarman, a former Republican. This perhaps reflected the change that had occurred in the past four years as Terrance and Jarvis, who had spent eight years rehashing the Great War and Treaty of Versailles, faded into the background.
The politicians who had come to the fore in Sherman’s term were a much more moderate breed. They largely debated on possibilities and budgets, on what to do if there was a crash, not on the failings of each other’s parties during the war years and refrained from beating at the stitches that held together their respective parties’ wounds. Taggarman, coming from Texas, steered far from Jim Crow, and the President, known for being a quiet and cool man, consistently refused to bring up the beaten horse of the Great War Congress and its actions.

1. Patrick Ryan, Progressive Candidate for 1929.

Patrick Ryan, who ran under the endorsement of Michael Sullivan, another worn-out firebrand, was little different in his attitude. Compared to the other two candidates, he was more willing to talk, and to bring out potentially painful issues, but was still a quiet, calm man compared to Terrance, Jarvis and Sullivan. Ryan, while upholding the usual Progressive opposition to Jim Crow in his platform, rarely brought it up, deftly reading the nation’s unwillingness to engage in another angry campaign in the middle of such prosperity.
Indeed, it was Ryan who said in a public debate, upon being asked what he thought of former President Jarvis, that “Mr. Jarvis was essentially a war-time President as much as Mr. Terrance before him. Now however, it is peacetime on all fronts. In the economy, and the world, the guns are now in the state of silence we thought we’d achieved all those years ago when the ceasefire went into effect on November 22nd.”

Candidates/Tickets of 1929

Election Manifesto of the Republican Party

Presidential Candidate: John T. Sherman
Vice-presidential Candidate: Simon Ritter

My fellow Americans, these past four years, we've seen exponential growth like never before. Would you not say that the policies that I have put forward have helped us attain this tremendous boom? Why should we fix what isn't broken?

However, I am aware of the possibility of a market contraction, and I believe we should prepare for it. But re-instituting regulation will not stop or particularly impede the damage that a contraction will cause; it will, in all likelihood, only make it worse.

To this end, I propose the same policies that have made us strong in the past, particularly laissez-faire economics, free trade, anti-militarism, secularism, and full citizenship. In light of the possible market contraction, I would like to create an economic emergency fund from the surplus of the Treasury, so that the damage of a contraction will be dulled.

Vote for a prosperous, free America!

Election Manifesto of the Federal Party

Presidential Candidate: William Taggarman
Vice-Presidential Candidate: ????

I come before all of you a Federalist, once Republican, in order to prepare for the potential collapse of our economic boom.

My stance on the economy is Free Trade and Interventionism. I do not propose the abolishment of Capitalism in order to stop our collapse, I intend to save it. Interventionism will give us the power to invest and subsidize private industry, but put preventive checks from making the state an industry of the government. Free Trade is old hat in American Politics, but it will be essential. Protectionist policies will only harm our growth after an economic collapse. The economy is global, and we have the largest share, the whole world and us included will benefit from Free Trade. If the world becomes protectionist, the global economy will collapse, and we will become isolated nation states. We must remain at the forefront of seizing the economy from ruin.

In terms of Citizen Policy: Full Citizenship and Pluralism. Continued population growth in the form of immigrants will only help to bolster our current growth. Furthermore, cheap immigrant labor will also help re-inspire industrial growth in the event of a global depression. This is not to say as a government the poor will be ignored. I believe in pluralistic policies because we are a nation of free people, and provide representation to all.

In terms of military, I am Anti-Military. It is of course essential to keep a large standing army for protection, and perhaps more important than usual due to the growing unrest in Europe, but we also need a flexibility of budget to allow for government surpluses to prepare for recession.

Imagine a US where the economy collapses, but the government does not have the surplus to pump into internationalist policies. We can have the largest military, we can have the freest people tax speaking, but it will all come to naught in the face of industrial collapse and anarchy. Socialism, a word many of us fear, might grip this nation like those before where Capitalism failed. It is to Intervention that we shall succeed, and it is to a large surplus with which we will intervene.

We must prepare against the worse to come, and while I do not have supreme omniscience to conclude it will, optimism is no excuse for ill-preparedness. We need a government strong enough to protect its people, not shackled by blind beliefs, but motivated by practicality.

Foreign Policy
. I plan full debt forgiveness of all European countries. This will help prevent a European collapse from occurring, and destabilizing the world economy, and will allow the nations to grow with the influence of our industry. We have seen how Germany has benefited from debt forgiveness, data is on our side.

Jim Crow I will use all executive authority to prevent states from using their Jim Crow laws. Furthermore, I will do my utmost to bring Jim Crow into congress for repealing, and I will bring it up the courts for its official ruling Constitutionally. All American are free, and deserve equal rights, nay have equal rights, thinly veiled race laws will not stop the government from protecting its citizens. There are many Southerners and States-right-ists who might shirk from this philosophy, but who oppose Jim Crow. I was elected into Texas by them. Let it be known that this is not a question of States Rights, this is a question of human rights, and that transcends even our federal mandate. It is a duty to use all power necessary in the defense of our citizens, not a power.

Thus I reach out to those Republican who, like myself, are appalled by the Jim Crow Conservatives, and know we need economical protection, to consider a Federalist Government for the time being. We do not need Republicans in times of economic distress, in truth we don’t need Federalists either, what we need is a government willing and unafraid to use its power to prevent Societal Collapse.

Vote Taggarman to Save Capitalism, the Average American Citizenship, and the World Economy!

Election Manifesto of the Progressive Party

Presidential Candidate: Patrick Ryan
Vice-Presidential Candidate: ????

We are told that America has achieved permanent prosperity, but how are the majority of the people prosperous when they are one illness, injury or layoff away from poverty. I believe America cannot be called prosperous until all Americans achieve economic security.

Economic and Domestic policy - We must restore the pensions, healthcare and unemployment benefits that have been taken away by the Republicans. We must do this for a number of reasons. The first is economic fairness. The capitalists in America have amassed an unprecedented amount of wealth yet many people are living with no savings to provide them any security in the event of a job loss or injury. Our nation can afford to provide security to all of its citizens. This policy will also help provide economic stability against the business cycle by stimulating the economy during a slowdown. I do not propose any new mass of regulation other than the need to enforce and strengthen the safety regulations in our factories and workplaces.

Foreign Policy
- America must be a peaceful advocate of democracy and self-determination globally. I will engage in negotiations with the UK and France over the Great War debts that are owed to us. I propose that the UK and France dismantle their empires which cost them dearly to protect militarily in exchange for a reduction in debt. I do not focus on Africa solely in this conversation and include the UK's empire in Ireland and India, two nations capable of independence.

Civil Rights - All Americans are guaranteed equal rights by the acts passed after the Civil War. These laws must be enforced by the Federal government if they are being violated.

Patrick Ryan - Progressive Party

Exceptional Situation(s):

Nada. Please vote.

This election brings me many fears; that the radical and ignorant force of radical republicanism that has dismantled the provisions provided by the state to the people and allowed business to occur with few standards or regulations may once again sweep to power, that the Progressives will fracture the vote of the left as they have done in the past and deny victory to the side of progress, that the Federal party will fall from its stance of social fairness, now it has a former Republican at the head. The latter of those three is my deepest concern, for I do not wish for the legacy of those great Federal presidents to be wasted and see the party become a puppet held by the hand of the Republicans.

Yet from what I can tell, this Federal candidate has abandoned his old party in search of power and is now steering us into abandoning our ideals. As such, if I do not hear firm commitments to federal aid to education, the elderly, the poor and the disabled, I will be forced, with deep regret, to renounce my membership of the party I deeply love.

From the manifestos published in recent days, it is becoming ever clearer that the Federal party no longer represents the left - this candidate has already alienated a good many of my peers by pretending "Socialism" is a dirty word; it is not, because it represents not the antipode to capitalism (that's communism) but a supplement that will make our society stronger and better. It's leadership, indeed, seems to be trying to abandon the centre. That is not what the party is for and that is not how the party should behave. We are a party of morals, who is out to serve every man, woman and child, not just the business elite, the privately educated and the Wall Street gang.

I would rather see my party collapse than merge with the right; I cannot see that being prevented unless the candidate releases strong messages to the Federal base on key issues, like education and welfare. Without such guarantees, he will not be receiving my vote come November 6th. Without statements on such important factors, the Federal base will be forced to flock to the Progressive party.

I cast my vote in favor of Patrick Ryan, a staunch supporter of labor, welfare, and equality. I am proud to see him carry the Progressive Party's banner forward in this election and will offer him my full support.

I cast my vote for President Sherman. It is my staunch hope that the South will continue to be left alone by the federal government with regards to Jim Crow and be allowed to resove its internal issues at its own pace.

I would also like to propose a bill.....

The Stewart War Debt Act

-Among those European Nations who are indebted to us due to expenses incurred during The Great War, payment will be allowed in the form of finished goods and the raw resources of Petroleum and Rubber. This shall serve the function of giving said European powers an alternate method of paying thier debts and shall flood our American Markets with cheap goods allowing the continuity of the high standards of living in our nation.

-Any European Nation willing to pay its debts in Gold or Silver speice with hard value shall be allowed to repay it for 75 cents on every dollar owed and the debt will be considered settled.

-In the case of colonial powers, they shall be allowed to lease berths in thier Naval Bases to the United States at rates to be negotiated depending on the quality and strategic importance of the bases in question.

-The United States affirms is unwillingness to forgive the debts of the European powers without payment. This bill merely recognizes the unlikelyness of German war reparations being paid given the socio-economic situation in Central Europe.
