What is the best way to get the USA into the Comintern, while playing as the USA? Also has anyone managed to recruit the USA while playing the USSR?

have 10 domestic spies and give them drop neutrality mission since the start of the game. also align to comintern from the very beginning of the game, it won't be easy but you can join the cointern this way

Will the USSR offer an invitation like the UK does? If so, about what year might it be expected? Is there a way to shift the political situation in the USA further to the left, like there was in Hearts of Iron II?

The USSR has limited leadership available for diplomacy, so to focus that much effort on the USA when the outcome is so farfetched, seems a waste. I personally don't think it will work given the US historical commitment to democracy. They may be in serious trouble economically in 1936, but the moment for dramatic political change was back in 1932. Historically, the communists were very active in the US, but they were shut down as were the German Bunds.
A much better strategy for the USSR diplomats that is within their capability is to get Romania and Turkey into your sphere of influence. Avoid annexing Romanian territory. Elevate the German threat and reduce yours by minimum manning on their borders. Establish strong ties with both through trade. While it is likely that neither will go commie, they can be moved toward socialism by using support your party. If you get Romania or at least prevent them from going over to the Germans, you will have done much to strengthen your southern front. Likewise, Turkey gives you access to the Mediterranean through the Bosporus.

Well, I was primarily interested in joining the Comintern while playing the USA, but I haven't been able to swing it yet. I suppose it would be easier if the USSR were influencing the USA, but as you say, Knippk, they aren't interested in that.

Like Knippk said, the best chance for political change in the USA was pre 1936. With that in mind you could always mod the files so that US starts with a coummunist government, or at least starts in that area of the diplo triangle. Obviously make a copy of any files you decide to change.
