Liberals

Tories again for me, please. It looks as the lesser of all evils here...

I think the Tories economic policies are quite sound. The government might need to intervene to correct flaws in the market, although tarrifs can only be harmful. However I disagree with their eurocentric perspective on foreign policy. We have nothing to gain by a war with France even if we could win at sea and greatly harm them by a naval blockade. If the french make any overly offensive moves on the continent it will be easy to build a coalition with their enemies, but doing so before they act will only provoke them and make us seem the aggressor. A european focus will only distract us from our future in Asia. Also, their talk of reinstating censorship is quite frightening. We cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past. Rolling back political reform is the most harmful thing we could do to our society.

As for the Whigicals, um, Liberals. Universal suffrage is an inevitable move. It will happen eventually, but it should not come too soon. If we allow the illiterate to vote the only winners will be populistic demagouges who appeal to the lower instincts of the people. We can not expect the uneducated or unintelligent to understand the complexities of politics, the economy or the subtle nuances of foreign affairs. It is unfair of us to ask them to try to understand that which is above their grasp. Doing so will only result in frustration on their part as the politicians they elect fail to enact their impossibly inflated promises. It will force the political leaders to shortsightedness and to unsound policies that will be disastrous in the long term. We must first educate our people, at the very least to the level of basic literacy.
Their flat tax, coupled with nonintervention, will inhibit industrial growth and punish initiative and skill. Overall, the Liberal policies seem to reward ignorance and laziness.
Their foreign policies are quite reasonable though if they collude with the Chartrists, which seems likely, they will be forced into harmful passivity.

The Whigs economic policies have not been as successful recently as in the past. Industrial growth has been sluggish and may need to be actively stimulated by the government. Hopefully a coalition with the tories will allow both parties to reach a beneficial compromise of free trade and intervention.
Some political reform may be needed if the workers get unruly again, though we should stop short of universal suffrage. A whig-dominated coalition with the Liberals might be the best option in this area.
The foreign policies are completely on the spot. Our future lies in Asia. A coalition with either the Tories or the Liberals could produce satisfactory results here, though a Whig majority would be preferrable.

The Chartrists would ruin us all. Their political reforms are even worse than the Liberals, and if they come into power the descent into populistic demagoguery would come even sooner and lead us swiftly into barbarism. That many chartrists hold socialism in high regard indicates that they could eventually turn even further left and abolish all our property, leaving us all at the mercy of the faceles collective or the demagogic tyrant. Even now their policies promise an economic regression into an agrarian society, promoting labour-intensive small scale agriculture while punishing industrial investments with high taxes on the enterprising. Their radicalism would not lead us forward into a brighter future, but back towards the dark ages.

OK, well as I go to bed for the night now seems like a decent time for a poll - especially since there is a downtime tommorrow.

We've had 24 votes in all.

Tories: 9
Liberals: 8
Chartists: 6
Whigs: 2

So everyone is very close except for the Whigs who have fallen behind. But those votes ensure that the wipeout I was afraid of for a little whilst won't happen.

I'm not sure if I should reveal the Irish vote now or later. It's not very suprising really as its based on the culture groups of the pops in ireland. Do you want to see the exact results now or should I wait until the election ends to reveal them?
