"Mr Capiatlist-who-is-really-a-socialist, you mentioned earlier a real-time aar, starting with a very character-driven event. Do you have any examples of such events in CK?"

Grabbing a mop to clean up after Director's sudden and entropic entrance, Mr. C stopps and leans on the tool to talk with the Welshman, "I do not have an actual example, but you can use any of them. From the mundane to the major. Something major like an assassination can center around the assassin as he plans, carries out, and succeeds against a target. Or it can be something minor. Maybe the story centers around a single Count as he journeys from his home to a small monastery a ways away to play chess with a local bishop. There is a lot you can do, you just need to plan it out well or you'll quickly fall behind and break the flow."

"Here, I'll help." the Welshman picks up another mop and gets to work. "That would be a rather short aar, wouldn't it? Though I suppose you could, say, have a sailor travelling round europe and documenting everything he hears. In fact if you generalize events, it could be, for instance, the Duke of Gwynedd on his journey to become king of wales." He mulled on this and then continued."But if we keep to the idea of real time, there would be a long time between updates, and it might drag out for too long to acquire any interest."

"The point would be brevity with a tremendous amount of accuracy, or several smaller updates posted within hours of each other. You would almost have to post times when your readers should log on so they can get posts in real time. Almost like a television show. A good AAR need not be long. Brief and well written pieces can also leave a lasting impression on readers."

"I had an idea for that once, as a radio program. I suppose what you mean by real time is 1 hours = 1 day, yes? So you could have the first day of a battle one hour, the next an hour afterward and so on. You'd have to find time to be online for a contiguos amount of time but that would actually be quite cool, saying "right, the next series of updates will start at 9:30, post the start, everyone starts discussing, then next one comes, and so on. Maybe you could combine that with normal narrative for the rest, but multi-day events get that."

"Well, it would be up to the author, the original point was that 1 day = 1 day so you would pick a single event and write about that. Updating once a day until it is over. So the AAR would be very short, and would be entirely posted within a week or two. But it would hopefully offer a decent amount of depth and thought and stick in the minds of the readers."

"So it could potentially be a mega battle which lasted for ages.... That actually reminds me of an idea I had for an interactive aar, where basically characters could propose bills and vote against them and such, while I would update in 'real time' ie every time an event happened so they would be able to react. In fact I recently thought of a new idea, an interactive multiplayer, which is kind of like that as well but a multiplayer, with both players running their own interactive aar. it would be really interesting in wars and such, two threads plotting against each other. And I think I'll give the mega battle one a try when I get back from my holidays."

Director steps around an archway in time to dodge the mop. "Has anyone seen the facilities? I mean, I'm all in favor of expanding the place, but, really! A man should be able to find the bloody..." A conga-line of authors boogies by, drinks in hand, nearly bowling down a team of waitresses bearing dessert trays. The noise of the dancers, the mariachi band and the stomping feet drowns out whatever he was trying to say.

"Oh, WelshDude! Good of you to help out! But I have to tell you that sort of interactive AAR has been done, sometimes with very mixed results. Make sure you walk that idea past the moderators before you start! Back when I still had a Ring of Power we'd have had... views... on the subject. Send them a PM, and don't expect too much - that's my advice."

"For my part I still think one of the best AARs I ever wrote was presented as a series of essays. Until I got carried away on all the wars it was short, sharp and tons of fun to write. Still, I've never been able to be brief."

He looks up at the word-balloon over head. "See what I mean?" Pulling out a pen, he pops the balloon, showering letters that chime like crystal as they shatter into dust on the floor.

"Place is getting stranger by the day," he mutters and claps WelshDude on the back. "But! That's just how we like it, eh!"

I'd just like to congragulate BigBadBob's The Presidents for becoming the 30th AAR to make over 100,000 views. Check it out, it's a fantastic aar.

That is good going for something that only started this year. Do you have a list of the other 29? Sounds like there should be a general thread to celebrate these.

Dewirix looks up from table at which he's sat. "Thirty AARs, you say? Actually, it's a bigger milestone than that. There have to date been 100 >100,000 post AARs."

He reaches into the attaché case beside him and pulls out a sheaf of papers.

"Admittedly one of the Spanish AARs is for a non-Paradox game, but still pretty impressive. I deliberately haven't counted any AARs outside the AAR section of the forums."

"Special mention should go to Rensslaer and The Yogi, each of whom have four AARs in this list. Prawnstar has three, while Duke of Wellington, IanClacher, Kaiser_Mobius, Kanitatlan, King of Men, Mettermrck, Remble, Singleton Mosby, Tommy4ever and TRP all have two."

"Remble also takes the top spot for most viewed AAR, with over one million views!"

Kaisermuffin wanders in, his crown slightly askew, bags beneath his eyes, coder's stubble and a chocolate chip muffin with a mighty bite taken out of it, as he wanders around blearily for a moment. "Do hope you serve coffee here." He murmurs when he finally ascertains just where the bar is. "For as soon as you do, I shall have to get back to work. 2064 isn't going to make itself.. I can hardly write about something unfinished."

"I'm only buying this bottle of wine because I need a glass of it to cook with. As the rest of the bottle is spare I could use it for toasting some of my favourite historybook EUIII AARs. Everyone knows about Chris Taylor's excellent Anglo-Byzantine historybook Porta Atlanticum, Portus Classis, but there is also Mayorqw's Baghdad in the Sky with Diamonds. This started as comedy and has evolved into a thoughtful historybook on an Islamic Empire.

As I still have a bit of wine left I can lift a glass to c0d5579's The Lion and the Lily, a narrative AAR following the English in the 100 years war. c0d5579 is well known for his HOI2 AARs, and this is every bit as good.

Finally, loki100's semi-competant deity Harry is back. This time he has turned his attention east where he is editing the Queen Mother's diaries. It could only be better if our pointy-toothed friend Thumper were to stage a comeback (which will be difficult, what with him either being dead or not born yet (depending on your view of time)).

Anyway I seem to have run out of wine so I will have to borrow your emegency bottle of babycham please barman. That spicy roast chicken isn't going to marinade itself."

Fallon stumbles in, and is immediately blinded by bright lights. It took a while who his eyes to adjust. Finally once he could see again he looked up at the warm inviting bar and its occupants. Smiling to himself he took to a stool and dragged an oversized book from somewhere within his jacket. Fallon, was content to sit and observe the baar for now. As the night wore on he knew he could learn much in this bAAr.

The Welshman wandered in. "I wander what's happened to the Presidents" he muttered to himself."Three months ago it hit 100,000 views, now it's over 150,000, yet it still on the brink of death. Just five votes last election. Where's everyone gone?"

A window creaks open and Bananafish pokes his head inside from the street.

"I got to back up Mr. C on this one. I read some of the Presidents; the story's very engrossing, but grand scope of the project makes the idea of actually joining it seem very intimidating. Speaking as a newcomer, I mean."
