Welcome to Rise of the Empire: A Russia MDS AAR. Right now, I'm undergoing reform of these pages to make the reader more comfortable.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Game: Hearts of Iron 2 Armageddon
Mod: Modern Day Scenario 2 v1.6
Goal for this AAR: Fighting under the banner of "Stopping Terrorism", Russia will slowly build and expand, re-creating the Russian Empire and establishing a new world order.

Cheats: -I will try to use only "NOFOG" as Russia does have spy satellites circling around Earth. Other than that, I'll try not to use more cheats

NOTE: Since I don't have the sprite files in MDS2, I am currently improvising by using the standard HoI sprites.

I hope you relax and enjoy your read!

Let's just begin the story already, shall we?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter 0: The Prolouge(1991-2003)

"Eto mozhet pokazatsya konce nashego naroda i nashey imperii proizoshlo v 1991 godu. Oni byli ne pravy, ibo on dal Rossii vtoroy shans i sposob naladit' Novoye Nachalo i formu svoyu sobstvennuyu sud'bu."
("It may seem like the end of our nation and our empire has occured back in 1991. They were wrong, for it gave Russia a second chance and a way to forge a New Beginning and to shape its own destiny.")

-Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin

The year is 2003.

The Russian Federation had seen better times and it had seen worse times since the nation had been re-established in 1991. Long considered a Great Power since Peter the Great's reign, Russia had ruled a vast empire, the largest empire ever seen, continuing in 1917 under new rulers and a new ideology. Ruling as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (known as the Soviet Union for short), it continued to keep parts of the old empire together for 74 years. Then in 1991, everything changed. The old Empire was split up, with 15 sovereign nations formed out of its shadows. Russia entered a state of turmoil, instability and economic collapse, forced to watch as parts of the former Soviet republics were being courted by the West to join their camp, led by its former Cold War enemy, the United States of America. It also had problems dealing with the war in the breakaway region of Chechnya, where seperatists tried to break free of Russia's grasp. It was a troubling decade for Russia, and a stressful time for its people.

But in 2000, Russia's prospects began to turn for the better, after Boris Yeltsin, the former President that saw the break-up of the empire, was replaced by a young President named Vladimir Putin. He began to see to it that the Russian economy would resuscitate after years of economic collapse, and has also began to stabilize the country after years of political instability. Benefiting from the shift in American foreign policy to root out terrorist camps after the attacks on 11 September, 2001, and the subsequent War on Terror, President Putin began to pacify most of Chechnya, claiming that the seperatists were working for al-Qaeda and other terror networks. But Russia has a long and ardous way to go before regaining her spot amongst the Great Powers, for if Russia is to become an empire once again, it would have to reclaim the lost territories and defeat its enemies abroad.

Chapter I: From A New Beginning (2003-2004)

23 March, 2003

As it stands, the former Russian Empire has been broken up into 17 sovereign states (the 15 nations that made up the former USSR, plus Finland and Poland), plus portions that are now in the hands of its neighbors. In the coming years ahead, Russia would reclaim its territories and serve as the bulwark against tyranny and opression.

The Russian Federation, circa 2003

As it stands, Russia could barely call out its industrial might to arm and equip the soldiers that Russia needs for its plans, so a massive industrial drive was started, complete with industrial subsidies and tax benefits to construct industrial complexes around the Federation. Most of these industrial zones however, were built near major cities, with the most grants located in Moscow and St. Petersburg.

screensave1l.png

The list of federal grants granted to the leading industries to constuct industrial complexes across Russia. The list goes on and on.

Meanwhile, a Cabinet Meeting was set up by President Putin to dicuss matters regarding foreign policy. At the end of the meeting, they agreed to create a new foreign policy goal that would let Russia intervene in regards to new terrorist threats, as well as continuing the job of pacifying the rest of Chechnya, which is seen by the Russian Government to be part of the War on Terror.
screensave2.png

The Current Presidential Cabinet as of 23 March, 2003. The Cabinet agreed to push a more agressive stance to terrorism. Also, due to personal reasons, Igor Ivanov resigned from the Foreign Ministry on 25 March, 2003. He would be replaced by chess champion Garry Kasparov, who quickly liked the job.

Also discussed during the meeting was the continuing war in Iraq, which was started by United States President George W. Bush to oust the regime of Saddam Hussein, and to dismantle the alleged stock of Weapons of Mass Destruction that Iraq currently has. Immediately after hostilities began, President Putin began to formulate his response, and a day later, he issued a statement condemning the attack as it "constituted a direct violation of international law that had put a sense of disrespect for the UN charter."

The tone of the Russian response to the invasion was harsh and bitter, as Russia did declared it to be against international law.

26 March, 2003

That day, the Russian Government released its Status Report of the Russian Federation to the President. Such a report, which is highly classified, is presented to the President every year, and shows their stance in the world today. Currently, Russia is considered a very large nation with massive economic growth and massive profits from the oil industries in Western Siberia. Yet even with these numbers, Russia is still a long way off from unleashing its true might and power.

And so starts my AAR. I combined both the Prolouge and the First Chapter together

Timmie0307 - Yep, that's the start of this wonderful AAR. Hope you liked it.

My first AAR was also made with MDS Russia, good luck! Russia is good choice for MDS AARing, as she starts with strong army, authoritarian policy, many oportunities for adventures in neighbourhood...Good start, eagerly waiting for more.

New update today (That was Fast!)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter I, Section II: Dealing with Rivals

In order for President Putin and the Russian Federation to regain the lost glory that it had lost in 1991, it would have to defeat its enemies abroad and establish a dominant position in the Eurasian landmass. To the West of Russia lay a bloc of 15 nations united in a common brotherhood, a common economy, and even a common currency. It was a union founded out of the ashes of European division after the Second World War, known in Russia and throughout the former Soviet Union as the Great Patriotic War, as country after country in Europe sought to intergrate with its neighbors to ensure peace and prosperity across the continent, in the hopes that such a war would never happen in the European continent again.

That union was the European Union.

The euro, the National Currency of 11 European nations, and the symbol of the economic muscle of the EU.

But it is not just the EU that Russia would soon face. To its south lay the Americans, stationed in Afghanistan after the United States uprooted the old Afghan government, which at the time was ruled by a group of extremist militant Islamists. Known as the Taliban, they oppressed the people of Afghanistan in the hopes of transforming the country into a purely Islamic state, while at the same time also getting support from al-Qaeda, led by its charismatic leader, Osama bin-Laden.

Meanwhile, sitting right next to the Americans and Afghans lay the behemoth that is the Islamic Republic of Iran. Ruled by an emperor, or shah, for millenia, this empire, which also supported the United States during the Cold War, soon crumbled when a popular revolution, led by the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, toppled the unpopular shah and replaced Iran's monarchy with an Islamic republic that is guided by Islamic religious leaders. All the while, they have been accused by the Americans and their allies of funding terrorists across the Arab World, in what is perhaps an attempt to overthrow the governments in these countries. Today, it still is a threat to the United States an its ally, Israel, and it may also be a future threat to Russia's ambitions as it expands.

To the East lies the Asian continent, where Russia also shares, as well as potential rivals to Russia's advance. Sharing a land border to the Northeast corner of Asia lies the People's Republic of China. A mighty dragon rising from the ashes of Mao Zedong's crushing regime, it has gotten rid of his worst abuses, creating one of the largest economies in the world, all the while remaining a totalitarian state run by the Chinese Communist Party. It also maintains the largest army in the entire world, an army that Russia will soon have to stand up to in order for its plans to be achieved.

And, in the far southeast of the Siberian frontier, near the city of Vladivostok, lies a tiny nation with the ambition of a troublemaker in the eyes of many nations of the world today. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, or North Korea for short, is a very troubling country for the United States, and its other ally in the Orient, South Korea. Born out of the ashes of the Great Patriotic War, North Korea tried to unify the rest of the divided peninsula under the banner of Communism, but was immediately stopped by United Nations forces under command of the United States, who pushed the North Koreans back towards roughly the same dividing line as where it started. And despite the fact that the war started 50 years ago, the two sides never signed a peace treaty, and with the people on the north side of the Demilitarized Zone(DMZ) about to develop nuclear weapons, there is the potential that war could restart within a minute's notice.

Those are the challenges the Russian Federation must confront if they are to proceed with their plans, and to Russia, they must be dealt with.

It's not a question of if Russia could do it, but a question of when.

There you go, another update for the masses.

Replies

Asalto - If that's true, then we have so much in common. Good luck on getting the Germans' collective butts kicked in your AAR.
Timmie0307 - Thanks! Russia will flex its muscles, but right now, it's focused on getting the Armies perpared for that.
KcindX - President Putin should probably be pretty proud of you.
Everyone Else - Thanks for the comments.

Will be China your ally or your rival? Joining Shanghai Pact in the future will get your back secured, but you will have to accept Chinese leadership in this alliance.

How about the Caucasus? I'm sure Putin is interested in the Baku (or Baka, I forgot) oil region of Armenia. Obviously, Belarus will return to the motherland.

Replies (so far):

Asalto - Well, China is in fact a rival battling against Russia's control of Asia (at least in the future). For now, however, Russia wants to get on Beijing's good side, since after all, China does boasts the largest army in the world. Other than that, there's always Serbia, and potentially India.
Hax - Thanks!
Soulking - Yes, Belarus (and perhaps Ukraine and Kazakhstan) will join the Russian motherland. And I think that President Putin already has a desire to reclaim the Caucasus, as well as getting himself intrested in the Philippines, with its warm-water harbors.

Please note, that as of now, I have played through 2003, and almost through 2004. I'm going to continue this chapter with a section on the Iraq War and another section about Russia's advances in 2003 and 2004.

Sorry for double posting, but it's time for an update (Please note that this is rather short).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chapter I, Section III: The War in Iraq

By the time March silently gave way to April, Iraq and its dictator, Saddam Hussein, was in dire straits. The situation on the battlefield was worse even to contemplate for them, as American-led coalition troops pressed themselves onward, and laid waste to an entire nation. During the last weeks of March 2003, American troops managed to take over Southern Iraq with relative ease, and even with Iraqi units were there to oppose them, they were easily cut down by American aircraft, and mowed over by the Coalition's armored tanks. The Americans' objective was simple, initiate a blitzkrieg move towards the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. Meanwhile, civilians in the areas that America had controlled began to celebrate the end of an oppressive regime, and its cruel dictator.

By 9 April 2003, Baghdad too was controlled by the Americans.

The Situation of the Iraq War as of 11 April, 2003, 2 days after the fall of Baghdad.

As the Americans pursued the Iraqi legions in the North, not even the feared Republican Guards could help the beleaguered units. The Coalition were also helped by hundreds of Kurdish rebels fighting to end the oppression of their people. Known only as the Peshmerga, they supported the Americans and helped them drive out the Iraqis from their homes in northeastern Iraq.

Eventually, on 17 April, 2003, the Coalition arrived in the city of Mosul, the last stronghold of the Iraqi Army, and after a fierce battle where some 10,000 Iraqi troops perished, Mosul was taken and the Iraqi Government finally signed a document of unconditional surrender. By then, Saddam Hussein himself vanished. He would later be found on 3 December, 2003. Still, it was a victory nonetheless to the Americans, who celebrated the end of major combat operations onboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72).

In the Russian Federation meanwhile, it was a sign that the Americans are more formidable than they previously thought. If Russia is to stand a chance against its old Cold War foe, it would have to rebuild its army, revitalize its industry, and upgrade its troops into the most powerful in the world.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1] - The MDS2 map does have some flaws, so the icon in the upper-left is supposed to be in the province of Mosul

And so concludes this update.

I'll be interested to see how my plans and game turns out when matched up to yours. ;)
