The Bloody Baron

It was the month of September and the air is already cold. The horse gallops to full speed until it reaches the camp. The camp was 50 miles from the city of Omsk. The camp serves both as supply depot and as the HQ of the operation. The horse finally stopped in front of the HQ and the rider went inside. It was a bit dark and smoky. The rider gave the message to one of the staff and left as quickly as he came in.

“What is it?” The Field Marshall of the Soviet Russia asked.

“The Mongolians have captured Novosibirsk. The army cannot advance any further.”

There were a number of groans within the generals. They have beaten us.

“Send a telegraph to Moscow. Tell them we have met the Mongolians. Comrades, looks like we have no choice but to be on standby until we receive further orders.”

---------------

Outside the Soviet Russia. Prince Xavier, leader of the Carlists, gave another speech during the afternoon of the 11th of August. The government saw the speech as a threat to the safety of the nation and the radical-right was banned by the Spanish government. The Carlists blamed the CNT-FAI on pulling some strings, the tension between the opposing movements increased more than ever.

In the western hemisphere, America was given a green light on the elections. The campaigning season has began with the presidential and vice-presidential candidates from the Republican Party, Democratic Party, Combined Syndicates of America Party and America First-Union Party trying to win the hearts of the American people. The CSA receives funds and advisors from the Internationale. Their victory would create a huge ally in the western hemisphere, a huge strategic advantage and it will satisfies Mexico's security.

Turning down to the South, the nation of Brazil receives a fatal blow from the stock market crash as its gold reserves were now depleted. The Brazilian Real collapsed resulting in nationwide strikes and the name, Astrojildo Pereira, have risen out of nowhere. The syndicalist movement gains huge amount of popularity and starts to receive funding from the International too.

Back in Europe, the British election within the Congress of Trade Unions has began. Policies will change. What will the new policies be? Who would be the next chairman of the Union of Britain? A Maximist leadership would surely be very advantageous for the Soviets.

The whole room flinched as the Khagan of all Mongols, screamed in rage and tore the paper into tiny pieces. “That lunatic! He is telling me to surrender peacefully and cede all my lands to him!?” Baron von Ungern-Sternberg screamed, putting his subordinates into terror.

Baron Roman von Ungern-Sternberg was a hero during the Great War. By the time of the 1st Russian Civil War, the Chinese tried to retake Mongolia only to be thwarted by the baron's men. He took leadership of the country and proclaimed himself Khagan of all Mongols. During the chaos of the civil war, the Mongolians took a part of the Siberian railway. The new and fragile Russia was too weak to bother to retake the railway and invade Mongolia.

The counsellor, Demcuydungrub, tries to calm his master down. “What if we decline, great Khan?”

“WAR! Hah! War!”

The bloody baron threw the chair that he was sitting on over to the corner. Filled his glass and drank it all in one go. Refreshed, he went in front of his desk and pull his sword out.

“Listen! I, as the reincarnation of Chinggis Khaan, will declare war on the Russians and I won't stop until I come home to Urga with Bukharin's head on a pike! We will march into his lands all the way to Moscow! We, Mongols, have already done it once! We will do it again!”

The room electrified with a warcry.

-------------

5 hours later.

The reply to the offer was already been sent. The Mongolians are preparing to attack Russian positions. In a few minutes, to their surprise, they will be the ones who will be defending. A humongous Red Army spilled through, numbering at least 60 divisions. The Mongolians have hold the position but to no avail, they were pushed out of Novosibirsk in 3 days.

There were few more engagements against the Siberians in Khanty-Mansijsk and Saranpaul. The last one is in Nizhnevartovsk in October 2. Nizhnevartovsk is the last major engagement against the Siberians. The government officially surrendered to the Mongolians and upon hearing the news, the Siberian army instantly evaporated, its soldiers and officers deserted to save their skins. The major leaders of the Siberian ring were executed by the bloody baron.

He'll use scorched earth and his elite 6/6/6 generals! Besides, he's already got 9 MIL skill and some LT advantage over the Russians... No, wait, why this isn't Magna Mundi Ultimate? 0.o

Where did you find that picture of Sternberg?

Aside that, the Baron seems to follow his own line. :p

Elections and Frustrations

mapoct1936-1.png

The political picture in Central Asia changed completely in just a short amount of time. The Siberian government has surrendered to Sternberg. The surrender was signed at Angutikha stating that all Siberian lands belongs to the Mongolians. Obviously, the Kremlin didn't recognized the treaty stating that the Soviet government is the legal successor of Russia meaning that the Siberian lands belongs to them and that the Siberian state is an illegal one therefore the Angutikha treaty was invalid.

Both the Mongolians and the Russians never made any action against Japan as the Asian power took the Siberian coast without any claims. They will deal with Japan later.

The Turko-Kazakh war is turning out to be favourable to Turkestan.

The Stavka has finalised a new plan against the new enemy. There are some changes but the goal is still the same. One red flag all over Siberia.

One army group will advance towards Angutikha and then onto Yakutsk comprising at least 40 divisions commanded by General Kornilov.

opivanIInorth.png

Operation Ivan II North (Yakutsk not shown)

The other will advance towards Novosibirsk just like before and they will continue until they reach the Mongolian city, Kyzyl. Comprising of at least 40 divisions and commanded by General Timoshenko.

In the 5th of October, 1936, Bukharin made a national speech commemorating the death of Lenin, the father of the Russian Revolution.

“Dear comrades, this Monday. We commemorate someone who is so important for the motherland. Someone who strive to destroy the shackles of the working class. His name is Lenin. Today we remember him. It is him who inspires us to rise up against the evils of the old order. Without him, there will be no Soviet Russia, there will be no Commune of France and there will be no Union of Britain. Not one workers' state would exist. Under his leadership, we now have the promised land. Where worker would serve themselves, only themselves. Long live Lenin! He may not be alive physically but he is alive in every hearts and minds of the Proletariat. Long live Lenin.”

Throughout the day, his mausoleum was visited by an unending queue of pilgrims paying their respects to the person who set Russia free.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food happily announced that the “Mechanized Agriculture” project was finally implemented and it was a success. The Ministry of Armaments also reported that the implementations on upgrading the army are now ready. Soon, the Soviet soldiers will be better than their obsolete WW1 counterparts.

Both ministries were given the green light on new projects. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food proposed a project, Agrichemistry. Chemicals such as pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, hormones and growth agents to improve the output of the collective farms. The Ministry of Armaments proposed funding on a new generation of artilleries to replace the old WW1 guns.

Throughout the month of October, the front was generally quiet. Until the final days of the month, the advances was slowed down and eventually stopped by the Mongolians. To the frustration of the Soviet generals, The Mongolian have employed hit & run tactics and manage to infiltrate through the lines and wreak havoc destroying the momentum of the advance. The Mongolians have also avoided the tank division and other hard targets instead they usually attacks the soft Red Guards that can be easily disorganise. Field Marshall Tukhachevsky was impress that the all-cavalry divisions unmatchable mobility was effective against the slow Russian infantries and tries to learn their techniques.

The Russians tried to push forward again.

The British election was finished. The results were nearly the same as France. The Maximists, followers of the Totalist doctrine, emerge to be the largest party but never achieved a majority. Federationists and Autonomists have created a coalition and became the majority under the leadership of Tom Mann, now the new General-Secretary.

Bukharin was a bit disappointed by the results but looks at it optimistically since the Totalists have a huge influence in the country.

4th of November 1936

In the United States of America, the moment of truth have arrived. This election has been the most tense and nerve racking in American history. Never been the campaign so competitive and never it been so ideologically contested. The solution for the economical meltdown is far from grasps but knowing who won would a start. The people of America from Maine to California all glued on the radio as the winner of the presidential race is now being announced. And the winner is...

usaelection1.png

...the Democratic candidate, John Nance Garner. The Republican candidate, Charles Curtis, later made an announcement congratulating the new president. Hoping for unity at this time of economical crisis. The two other parties have yet made any announcements.

As the courageous Red Army advance towards Novosibirsk and Nizhnevartovsk again. Another frustration happened when the Russians were pushed out of Aleksandrovskoye just a day after they captured it.

“A fast and mobile units pouring through a hole in a frontline, slicing to its enemy's rear and encircling the troops at the enemy's front. I think this is what the Russian army needs.”
-Mikhail Tukhachevsky, Field Marshall of the Soviet Russia.

“Long is now trying to take this country by force. I will say this to him right now: 'No! Never! The American people will never accept such tyrant like Huey Long!' Come with me, proud and industrious workers of America. We called this nation 'Land of the Free', no it is not. It's a land of the exploited and the abused. It's not free! But I promise you, my American comrades, rise up now and we will make it so!”
-John 'Jack' Reed

"Mongol Cavalry!"

The naval projects from the Kerensky administration were finally finished. Two squadrons of Series 2 submarines (SS-II) and a squadron of Gnevny class destroyers (DD-II) were deployed from the shipyards of Arkhangelsk and were all assigned in their designated fleets. It is decided that there will be no more naval projects for the time being.

In Moscow, a new type of soldiers have been deployed. They were called 'Internal Troops of the Committee for State Security' or Internal troops, for short. They are under the jurisdiction of the newly created KGB (formerly known as Cheka), headed by Genrikh Yagoda. The first one was assembled in Moscow and many more will be assembled soon on other major cities, then the whole country later on. Their role is to guard Soviet officials, government buildings and prisons. Another role was to be the military arm of the KGB to aid them on suppressing any subversion, enemy espionage or counter-revolutionary movements. They will make Mother Russia safe.

The Internal Troops of the KGB

In America, things are heating up a bit. Both the Combined Syndicates and America First both rejected the results of the election claiming that the two old parties collaborate and cheated to keep the status quo, a status quo where they monopolise America's politics and keeping it under control to only two parties. The former president, Herbert Hoover, despite belonging to the other party, he proclaimed his support to the new Democratic president hoping that he will bring America out of the Great Depression.

usaelection5.png

In Brazil, one name appeared as Black Monday took Brazil. Astrojilo Pereira. This formerly unknown journalist from a Socialist newspaper agency, “A Classe Trabalhadora” (The Working Class) climbed up the ladder and soon became the leader of the Brazilian Worker's Party. In the 8th of December 1936, he made a bold move that became the vital point in Brazilian history. He held a mass rally in the capital. He made an ultimatum “Resign now or we will storm the Presidential Palace and resign you by force”. The police responded, under direct command of the president, by arresting Pereira from his home. The news of his arrest spread throughout Rio de Janeiro and in an instant, the angry mob marches towards the palace, a military unit was sent to disperse the crowd but they defected to the protesters upon meeting them. The revolutionaries welcomed the soldiers with open arms.

The revolt has reached the Presidential Palace, demanding the release of Pereira and for President Artur da Silva Bernardes to step down, once and for all. The next day, 10th of December, more military generals and units, at least 30% of them, have defected. At 4:25 PM local time, the president publicly announced his resignation and released Pereira from prison. Throughout the country, people have celebrated on the streets and Brazil is now under Syndicalism with the Trade Unions under control similar to Union of Britain and Commune of France with Pereira at the helm.

The world was shocked at the events that unfolded there. A bloodless revolution was achieved. The Internationale was pleased at the results and immediately recognize the new government. Their investment paid off.

The same Mongolian tactics were used against the Red Army advancing towards Nizhnevartovsk as the huge 40 division army was slowly defeated by the Mongolian cavalry. With winter setting in the Siberian wilderness, they're putting themselves at an immediate disadvantage. The advance that start at November 19 was put back to square one a month later.

frontline13.png

Frontline. 22nd of December 1936

“Ivan South” too was put to halt the same manner at Dec 23. The slow 51 day advance demoralized the troops and were easily stopped by the Mongolian cavalry, thanks to poor organisation.

Both armies restarted their respective advances. The southern army met 3 cavalry divisions at December 29. The largest enemy resistance so far.

battle2.png

Mikhail Tukhachevsky has now submitted a continuation from his previous report. The Red Army welcomed the field marshall's new material. (ingame: just researched Human Wave) His fascination on the Mongolian tactics made him create another piece hoping this would push the Russian army into the modern age.

10 day later, the Ministry of Armaments have developed a new type of artillery for our troops on the front. So far, the production and replacing of the artilleries haven't been funded yet. The ministry has given a new task to develop a new tank for the Red Army.

soviettech1937jan.png

On the 21st of January 1937. The Internationale has a new member. Norway. Since the past months, the effects of Black Monday and funding from the Internationale have created a tidal wave of popularity for the Workers' Party and the Bolshevik Party, the Socialist coalition inevitably grabbed the majority in the Norwegian Parliament and passed numerous Socialist reforms on the country. Later on, Norway was admitted into the Internationale.

A report has been received from an embassy worker in Paris. The embassy worker was from the newly created Soviet foreign intelligence, GRU (Main Intelligence Directorate), under the leadership of Ivan Proskurov, the former head of Cheka. It was said that the France is starting to divert some of their civilian economy into war footing. Unfortunately, the GRU officer doesn't know the purpose of it. Are they preparing for war against Germany or maybe war against North Italy to support South Italy just as they promised from the congress? Or maybe just defence?

gearsofwar.png

In America again, After America First Party rejected the results, Long have made a call to arms to his supporters on the south of the country. Rally has broken out from Louisiana to North Carolina. The new US president, John Garner was finally inaugurated in the 21st of January 1937. Gardner is now facing his first challenge of his term and this won't be the last.

usaelection7.png

Aside from the capture of Aleksandrovskoye, a few hit and run engagements and raids which sometimes happen behind the front lines, the month of January was pretty much uneventful. The Russian morale was so low that a single cry of “Mongol cavalry!” can ignite a huge panic.

Yes. I build garrisons. So far, it's just Moscow. I think they look cool on the map. Role-play ftw!

I'm sure the Internal troops are from NKVD and KGB were called OGPU or NKGB during those times but I prefer to keep it simple.

Great update, just a little correction:Brasilia was built in the 50's,before that Rio was the capital of Brazil
Woah! Thanks for pointing it out. What's worse is, the Brazil screenshot already said Rio but I didn't notice. Thanks again.

Syndicalism continues to grow I see. The situation in Siberia is rather frustrating though and I shall refrain from saying anything about the new KGB troops other than that I am sure they're fine fellows who have only the noblest of intentions.
