This AAR was chosen for the WritAAR of the week: Oct. 9, 2011

Lenin and the Bolsheviks were defeated on the 2nd Proletarian Revolution. Bukharin and the other surviving members went underground and resisted the weak Kerensky government.
But in January 1936, Kerensky, the man who holds Russia together was assassinated. Mother Russia's old wounds will re-open.

Hello and welcome to "A Collective Regime of Peace and Love". This is my first AAR. The country will be Soviet Russia in the KR timeline. Great! Since this is my first, I'm very unconfident about this especially my writing but I'll do it anyway. I'll cover my eyes and jump into the breach.

Comments are, of course, welcome but if your comment is somewhat not aligned to our revolutionary spirit, you will be sent away to be ermmm.. readjusted. Do not fear, these people are very friendly- no, no, don't struggle. That is just vitamins. Yes... vitamins.

Before we continue, let us rise to listen to this AAR's national anthem. :D Many of you have probably seen it but I'll put it in for the sake of those who haven't seen it.

and now on to the AAR!

--------------------------------------------------------------
Chapter 1: A new year and a new Russia

-------------------
"This is wonderful! Just what us workers needed. Generals and soldiers to rule and shoot us whenever they please. This is just laughable, comrades. No matter how hard they try, these monarchist Reactionaries will never bring Mother Russia into progress and prosperity. Instead, they will only bring progress into their purse and into their stomachs. We will rise again! Workers of the world unite!"
-Nikolai Bukharin, quote from an article in an issue of Pravda. An underground Marxist newspaper.

"Czar's butt! It's 10:25AM. Where is he?! oh my God, I can't do this. I'll just go. Hide. Get out of the country. Wait... no. No. I must kill him. Oh God, there he is. Please God forgive me. For Russia. For Russia! Die you bastard!"
-unknown

"Remember, the code is 'the stars are crying'. You know what to do next."
- unknown

-------------------

A death of one leads to the death of many

The speaker begins his announcement. His voice can be heard from all the radios throughout Russia. Everyone was listening to the voice.

"I, Pyotr Nikolayevich Wrangel, will head the military junta..."

"Surrender your guns and put your hands up or be declared as traitors and will be shot!"

"...no. Not to rule as a dictator but as a guardian, to bring stability and peace to this country."

"I said, surrender yo-" in a snap, the poor soldier was shot in the head. The firefight began, it kept going until the Wrangelists assaulted the building and finally defeated the garrison.

"The Duma will be closed and the constitution will be suspended for now..."

Columns of soldiers are pouring into government buildings. Removing any resistance.

"...and any members of the Duma and the Senate, military officers and government officials who are Marxist supporters or has affiliation to Marxist organizations will be put into house arrest..."

"Lunatics! what are these charges?"

"Subversion and treason, minister" a smirked reply from the rifleman

"...any subversive press will be closed and destroyed...

the door open wide and a stream of soldiers stormed in and opened fire at the surprised workers.

"Hah! Please! The next time you talk, use your mouth not your butt! Now get out of my residence!"

"It makes me sad just thinking of dear Kerensky. Killed by those... savages!"

the soldiers stormed out as the press building and left it to be devoured by fire.

"Shut up! I order you to stand down or I will shoot you! I have the bloody authority to do that." pointing the gun at the minister

"...but all of these, unfortunately, are the price that we, citizens of Russia, have to pay to keep Russia alive..."

the minister scarily stepped away and went back to his terrified wife and child.

"Get back to your homes. Any suspicious characters will be arrested. Travel is only allowed for important reasons only. This shall remain until the announced date." loudly said by an officer as throughout the streets of Russia, Wrangelists patrols them, check-points were set-up and some citizens were arrested.

"...Enemies of Russia, inside and outside, remember this. Russia is One and Indivisible!"

“Marxists. Marxists everywhere.”
-Nikolai Yezhov, head of Okhrana, Russia's secret police.

“Bukharin. You have arrested hundreds of worthless people but you let that stubborn rabbit shit got out of your sights?!”
-Pyotr Wrangel

--------------------

Red ghosts

The take-over by the Wrangelist faction and the declaration of martial law went smoothly than expected thanks to Wrangel's popularity within the nobility, bureaucracy, military and even in the Orthodox Church. He was always viewed as a hero within the White Russians with most of them are longing to see the Czar back to his throne, which was impossible with that Red-loving Kerensky ruling as the president for almost twenty years.

Pyotr Wrangel

Speaking of Kerensky, his assassin was never identified and the motive was still unknown. Was he working for someone or was he working for himself and it was just a crime out of frustration? No one knows. One rumour surfaced and later encouraged by the new regime was that the Leftists are behind the assassination, killing Kerensky and secure the majority of the Duma by a coalition between the Socialist-Revolutionaries and the Mensheviks finally breaking the deadlock. Another rumour was Kerensky's death was part of the plan by Wrangel and his lackeys to take over the weak and fragile government.

While the Wrangelists' stunt at the afternoon of the 4th of January was popular within the higher-ups. Within the masses however, dissidence shoots up and a lot of them starting to sway to the left. This unsettling effect made the new government spend an enormous amount of resources quelling the dissent. One of these procedures was, of course, by arresting Marxists all around the country, especially the high-profiled ones. Despite the scale of the operation, many of them escaped Wrangel's grip and went into hiding like Nikolai Bukharin.

budgetjan1936.png

After their list ran out of people who are now either arrested, dead, or into hiding; the purge suddenly turned into a witch hunt, suspects came from the wealthy landowner and down towards to the common worker, where's a small misunderstandings or disagreements can lead to accusations of being a Red sympathiser. The effect was the opposite as intended as fear turned into frustration and frustration turned into dissent.

After all this commotion, Yezhov, Antonov and Denikin still believes that this is just the tip of the iceberg, believing that even after the bloody civil war of 1917, the Reds are still “out there in the dark woods” hiding and the ranks and files of the Russian hierarchy were contaminate by the Reds all conspiring to overthrow the new administration.

The military junta

But all these ideological war, politics and witch hunts weren't the agenda during the 13th of January, 1936 when Boris Strumer, one of the most experience politicians in Russia, died of heart attack. According to his aides', Strumer's health deteriorated upon hearing the news that his close friend, Kerensky, was assassinated in broad daylight a week and a half ago.

Strumer believed that the deep hatred between the Reds and the Whites must stop and put their battles from the streets and into the buildings where they can sort their disagreements through words. That was his dream, a politically stable Russia. No more civil wars. No more overthrowing. No more. Kerensky was his dream. He did that with his coalition of Socialist-Revolutionaries and the Kadets.

Now Kerensky is dead and the old wounds opened up again, probably bigger than before. His dream is gone. He died never to see Russia like what she was before, one of the Great Powers, admired, feared and respected.

“He just came up with something that we already know! He is a dimwit. I'm going to bet you ten Roubles that he's arse will be kicked in the upcoming election.”
-Nikolai Bukharin's impression on Mosley

“This is the worst decision he ever made.”
-Anton Denikin on Wrangel, after the meeting in 14th of January 1936

Birmingham

Opochka, 12th of January 1936

“Anatoly, have you heard already? The English dog that's hiding in Canada was dead.” boredom hits Dmitri thus starting a conversation.

“Huh? Who?”

“His Royal Highness” said sarcastically, “King George V”

DeathKingGeorgeV.png

“oh really now? Britain must be celebrating. Ah, here comes the boss.”

Two figures walk towards the two bystanders. One on the left is Bukharin and with him, a bodyguard and another one on the way back following them, guarding their backs.

Nikolai Bukharin was born in Moscow, October 1988, with his parents both worked as school teachers. In 1906, he joined the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party and later became a member of the Bolshevik faction. He was one of the prominent members of the party, rose up through the ranks and also became one of the editors of Pravda.

At the last days of the Russian Civil War, Moscow fell in September 1921, signalling the Bolsheviks' total defeat against the joint German and White Russian armies. Bukharin disappeared. All that is left of him was his voice in the Pravda newspapers every now and then. He later resurfaced after the Wrangelist's take-over as one of the high priority targets by the new management in Okhrana. Again, they failed to capture him.

Nikolai Bukharin

“You're late, comrades.”

Bukharin chuckled “Yeah? Tell that to the new sentries at the checkpoint” Bribing the sentries was easy until they get replaced by new ones. “Are they here?” Dmitri replied with a nodded and showed them inside.

“Comrades! I'm sorry I'm late.” cheerfully said by Bukharin

There are six people inside but only two were instantly recognisable. One of them was Andrey Vyshinsky, a colleague of Litvinov in the foreign ministry. Vyshinsky was sent to Opochka instead of Litvinov since the latter was currently busy with other matters. The other person was Ivan Proskurov, the head of Cheka, intelligence arm of the underground government. Bukharin joined them as they shook hands and took their seats.

Three high profile targets in one location. This better be something.

“How is our man in Birmingham?” he looked at Vyshinsky.

“Good. Good. He reports that the meeting went well. Everyone attended. The Italians were there. The French. Also the Georgians.”

“Georgians?” a chuckle went out of Bukharin's mouth. The Bolsheviks doesn't have a good opinion on Georgia. Not only they were separatists, they were also Mensheviks and declared neutrality during the civil war. “What else?”

“They came up with the new doctrine called 'Totalitarian Socialism' or 'Totalism' in short. Valois approved it, as well as Mussolini and Beria. I'll give you the agent's report later. All the information that you need to know will be there. They have compiled all the works into a document called the 'Totalist Charter' which is now being finalised to be pressed and distributed throughout the subscriber's country in order to gain support for his faction. The whole thing made the Germans and the Americans very cautious and add that with the English king's death, Mosley and the British Maximists were having a field day.” Vyshinksky then took a deep breath after.

“Looks like I have to applaud them for doing a good job then. This maybe vital in the future”

“That'll be diplomatically wise”

totalistcharter.png

riseoftotalism2.png

“What about us?” Bukharin suddenly asked “Are we receiving them as well?”

Proskurov interjects in the conversation “Don't worry, comrade. The agent has signed a deal with the publishers and we have already arranged how we're going to smuggle them. It's difficult but we're doing it. An 'up yours' for Wrangel and his cronies!”

The three men laughed and took a sip from their drinks. Proskurov then looks back and talked to one of his men. His aide nodded, took a folder and handed it to Proskurov. Both Bukharin and Vyshinsky looked at him. “Comrades you should take a look at this” He opened the folder and gave a copy to both of them each. “This came from a very reliable source. I'm sure there is no mistake in this piece.” Proskurov assures them as the two became silent reading the copy. They couldn't believe their eyes. Their faces were written with shock then turned into glee.

Bukharin then said “This will be interesting”

@Morlak, Zhuge Liang - we will see how stupid (or maybe clever?) he'll be on the next update.

@yourworstnightm - considering that he's an editor of Pravda. He might use it for something. ;)
