I have not yet read the entire thread, so I may be covering old ground. Nonetheless, I was moved to create the following:

I've noticed this too. Once I got Scotland to ally with me, but in the current game, with two of their provices ceded to Denmark, they won't ally with me. And as England I could really help them out.
It takes a huge diplomacy score to get a nation to ally with a rival or nation it has a mission against.
Are you talking about the relations number? Does that top out at 200 btw?

Maybe they got 6th level fort + march...I have not yet read the entire thread, so I may be covering old ground. Nonetheless, I was moved to create the following:
when walls breach one usually assaults the fort.
Aspecialy when defenders dessert for 10th time, as it make assault quite easy.
A classic one
Sometimes I find it just easier / more prudent to just diplo-vassalize instead.
Atleast they don't colonize more of Africa.
