...After the Annexation of the Trevisan republic of Venice Leopold Anton I immediately declared war on Aquileia and invaded both of their provinces, annexing the small country in the process.

    Well.....Stupid Italians

The Archbishop had died; no one knows why but he was found dead in his room bleeding from his mouth. A national day of mourning was held in all provinces of the Archbishopric. The new Archbishop [CITATION NEEDED] promised to follow through with the last wishes of his predecessor. In his grand speech, [CITATION NEEDED] decided that the constant rebellions of the Venetians and Aquielians had proved that he in fact would have to do something drastic. But before he could several foreign dignitaries came to the presence of [CITATION NEEDED]. They offered him alliances from their respective countries; Both Savoy and Modena.

The request by the two Italian states

[CITATION NEEDED] assembled the dignitaries of the previous governments of Venice and Aquielia as well as the Archbishopric itself. So in one grand movement the Archbishop rose his hands in the fashion of his predecessor; but spoke in a softer and less harsh voice, "My people! I have heard the pleas of your rebels and dignitaries but instead of granting you freedom. I grant you Dominion-ship. From now on Both Aquielia and Venezia (now Venice) will be granted freedom under the condition that you stay our Dominions (Vassals in reality) and will help us in all wars." But secretly under his breath he cursed the blasted Italians for rejecting his rule in the first place; Finding them unworthy to be citizens of Salzburg. All over the new "Dominions" Nationalist cheers broke out in the streets and people began to hug as this chapter comes to an end.

Unfortunately after the Archbishop made his announcement he fell gravely ill; dying a few days after from fever. His replacement Archbishop Jakob II (or St. Jakob as he calls himself) replaced him immediately after he passed. This man was not as glorious or imperialistic as his predecessors. Despite those traits he lacked he replaced them with ambition and narcissism. Rumors started flying about him the moment he entered the grand hall to make his first speech. He stood in front of his subjects: whom were whispering of his apparent affairs with maids and servant boys alike. But he dismissed them all as he stood center stage and spoke harshly and with undeserved pride, "People of Salzburg: You know of the previous Archbishop Jakob no? His grand achievements for defending this principality and it's dominions? Well it is time to honor him; from now on we are still to be known as Salzburg. But the province shall be renamed St. Jakob in his honor!" He rose his hand into the air and awaited the applause to roll in; but nothing happened. no one clapped, only the rising voices of questioning citizens. Until the Archbishop ordered the guards to ready their arms no one seemed to like or accept this new Archbishop from the begging. This will be a hard Period for Salzburg. . .

(The citation needed thing is because I can't remember his name)

Chapter 4: Why Reap when you can Sow

At the Start of his reign, Archbishop Jakob was immediately thrust into a war with Epirus. He had insulted the Power of Salzburg and meant to take Venice from us. The people would have none of that and so the Archbishop stood on his balcony and yelled to his people with vigor and fury, "The people of Epirus are cowards! They move in to invade the humble citizens of Venice whom we have brought under our wing. Surely they are toying with us? I have arranged Siena and Montenegro to give us Military access in which our invincible armies can march straight into their land. And while Croatia is being occupied by Sweden we do not need to get permission from them. Therefor let us conquer our enemies and destroy them utterly!" A large cheer erupted from the crowd as the Archbishop reentered his chambers in a sweat. He beckoned to his servant to attend to him, whispering into the boy's ear, "Truthfully I am scared of this war. Even I, the great leader am afraid of losing everything the forefathers of this country fought for. You though; a young child should not worry about this. Yet I pester you continuously with my problems: Come now we must be off." So the Archbishop rose to his feet with a sudden lurch of anger and fury, running back onto the balcony and screaming "Citizens of Salzburg! You must hear my cry of war. These barbarians we call Epirus are an affront to god; they call themselves "Protestant" but really they are scum! Show no mercy my people." Within himself he knew the courtyard was empty but his eyes could not see. In his mind his people were cheering him on with glee and envy. But being alone as he is nothing he saw was true.

On the Battlefield Archbishop Jakob was known as the "Bishop of Chains". An unruly name but it due suited his personality as he fought with religious fervor so hot and deep it was frightening. But the name was due to his tendency on the battlefield to let out his rage with a mace and a whip made of chains. Today was no different: he looked upon the Epirote army with a pitiful stare. His conjoined army of both ethnically Italians and German people shared the same amount of troops as the Greek one. But they lacked one thing, the funds to afford cannons as the Archbishop had done months before. Both armies stood staring at each other; waiting for their commanders to make the first move. The Sky turned appropriately red as neither dared to move. Both Jakob and the enemy commander just stared into each others eyes as they stood on the front. Jakob wove his hand violently to his front and silently one thousand troops curled around him into a protective shield; mounting their shields as the Romans did for protection. The enemy General laughed at this notion and ordered his archers to fire, but before he could accomplish this the Salzburgian (really?) troops disbursed and there stood the Archbishop in full armor and mounted. At his side stood two cannons primed as the troops in front of them parted letting loose red hot iron at the enemy lines. None of the enemy troops expected this as they panicked before a large chunk of the enemy soldiers were wiped from the map. Calvary and infantry alike from both sides clashed in the bloody mess we call war. Cries of hate and somber moans of death swept across the field. But Jakob just sat on his horse watching the bloodshed around him; troops occasionally approaching him only to have their face broken by a sudden rush of chains and a heavy smack from a mace. Eventually he was left alone as the enemy retreated and his soldiers cheered of victory. But he did not: Jakob just sat on his horse and stared somberly at the former areas of enemy lines. There was nothing left only the ruins of the enemy forces and corpses of Salzburg's loyal troops. But his contemplation was broken by the approaching of two soldiers with the enemy's general in captive. "Is this what you wanted? Patron of Epirus?" Spoke the Archbishop as he beckoned a soldier to get him a sword. "Wanted? You took Sovereign land of our fair country under your control! You zealots of the slave religion have brought nothing but hate to this world." The General fell silent as he stared at the ground, his words made the Archbishop raise his brow in contemplation but nothing more. Slowly he dismounted his horse, took the sword from his attendant and said to the departing General, "May the lord give you forgiveness." Quickly ending his life with a swipe to the face he closed his eyes and began to pray for forgiveness before saying aloud "For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness: and by reason of thy law, I have waited for Thee, O Lord."

Several days after the end of that fateful battle the war was over after a white peace deal with Epirus. The Soldiers of Salzburg returned home to much fanfare as no love was held with the traitorous enemies of state known as Epirus. But the Archbishop felt much sadness; for he knew his people were unforgiving and if they decided to do so he would die. The neighboring countries might not believe in helping the poor and weak Salzburg but no one knows that all he can really do is just wait. For this, Jakob wept. Secretly he wept away from prying eyes so in which he could remain strong in the beliefs of the peasants, but not in his own. For the Archbishop was weak but strong. A firm belief of the people however, contradicted this so and therefor he was stuck in his little lie called Archbishopric. The only option was death and he could not say he hadn't contemplated it before.

    ZE END

Chapter 5: Neutrality; a Cunning Ploy by People Who Like Banks and Knives

It was a crisp, cool Monday morning: This bewildered the Archbishop because in his kingdom everything should be hot! Jakob turned towards his servant boy with a wicked look in his eye. He began spouting about how the world needs to revolve around him and not other countries like Austria, or even the Pope! To his misfortune though the Archbishop was talking rather loudly and down the hall were the most unfortunate people to be at his palace. The only General in Salzburg's employ; One Johann II, a dignified and religious man. He had come to talk to the Archbishop about the release of his Vassal states and a worried look on the Archbishopric shared by his colleague(s). The General was speechless by the disregard of the Archbishop's Religious standing made by Jakob himself! This angered (although a bit redundantly stated) the General to a point of him Storming out of the palace. That same afternoon a crowd of Particularists crowded outside the Alte Residenz. Demanding the Death of Archbishop Jakob for his heresy. In response to this the Archbishop stood upon his balcony and began to speak, "My People!" He awaited applause; completely oblivious to the fact they had straw dolls in his image on pitch forks. "Well? No applause?" There was no applause; unfortunately in it's place a flurry of rocks pelted him into a retreat. The mob did get it's way though: for when the Archbishop tried to walk into the Alte Residenz for safety he slipped backwards off the balcony on one of the rocks they had thrown at him.

A fitting end to a madman; (he originally died while fighting the Particularists but really that wasn't embarrassing enough to fit the Insanity event I got earlier) the Army however was not happy about Jakob's death and the apparent treachery of their only general. But hope was still available to the Nation of Salzburg: From the crowd of Particularists a man dressed as well as the former archbishop parted the rioters and stopped front and center. "Violence is not the answer to violence, for it only brings chaos." This man was decrepit and sickly, most people would not touch him but the people stood by his words, dropping their weapons to the ground. He brushed off his shoulders and proclaimed "I will take control of this country. It is my rite as descendant of Bishop Rupert, I Rupert II."

Well the crowd didn't care, neither did the army; Since they had literally just lost their previous Archbishop and the long and hard road to get a new one would have made the Duchy collapse. So he was escorted into the Alte Residenz and the corpse of his predecessor was dumped into the usual pile of dead people outside of town for burning. All was peaceful for six whole years of his rule: the economic slump Salzburg had been in for nearly fifty years had ended in the first year he reigned. But peace would not last long; for Milan had a taste for land, Savoy's land to be precise. The Swiss as well wanted to test out a new knife on Savoy's allies and quickly declared war on Salzburg. . .

(Well guys this is all I can spare right now since School is getting intense, exams are starting up so I might not post for a bit more)

Chapter 6: War with the Banks

(Im still having problems with Imageshack, also exams are over so I probably will return to posting more)

The War with Switzerland was going swimmingly so far, the newest Archbishop (Rubert II) was a good operator of the army, having never fought in battle he commanded from behind. Together with him the army of Venice and Aquiella move to defend Savoy, streaking capturing Milanese and Swiss territory on the way. But the Swiss were not to be counted out as of yet, they may have been tied up with the economic troubles that come with massive mercenary armies but they could still attack. Large Swiss and Milanese merc-armies moved against the Salzburgian/Venetian (hurray making up words for people) defensive positions; but the Archbishopric had recruited two thousand cannons and a hundred new infantry to replace the ones lost. Venetian forces took the most damage, rushing forward in defense of the fortress. Five thousand Venetian infantry and divisions smashed against the Swedes: waves and waves of Swedish mercenaries came at the Italian state's armies. When all hope was thought lost when reinforcements of the Swedish Royal army appeard and begun assaulting the Venetian position, the Salzburgian cavalry divisions broke off from the main army and trampled the Swedes from behind.

When news came that the Aquiellan forces had broken through the Milanese defenses and invaded the capital a treaty arrived on the footsteps of the Archbishop. A young messenger boy bowed before Rubert II, "Your grace, I am a messenger from the Swiss royal court; His majesty wishes for you and your vassals to take what you have and stop this war." A smile crossed the Archbishop's face: he chuckled kindheartedly and said to the boy, "You look like you were in a famine my boy! Have these Ducates. Go and buy you and your family a meal worth having." He moves closer to the messenger and whispers gently in his ear, "Tell your lord I accept this offer. But if he does this again there will not be a Switzerland to rule."

Chapter 7: Europe your a Dame

    (NO Replies QQ)
(So weird new everyone! I got annexed! By Bavaria, during the war with Brandenburg who came to help Switzerland. Austria joined them and invaded the land I took from Switzerland+Milan and so once I released myself from Bavaria I rose up and annexed their asses. Stupid Augsburg wanted to help so they got it too.)

Salzburg belonged to the enemy; the war with Switzerland was a success, but the one against her allies was not. Despite peace between Switzerland and the Archbishopric being instated her allies wanted to claim glory for themselves. Bavaria, and Austria joined the war on Brandenburg's side and together they claimed our lands. The Austrians invaded Aquiella and took the region of Tirol. Meanwhile Bavaria and Augsburg took our homeland. The archbishop and his company retreated to Avignon where they awaited what would happen next. The World was in chaos: Spain had revolted and the Catholic powers regained their land, squashing the Iberian nation into Granada, and then to dust. While Castille took out their oppressors Aragon took out our allies in Italy as Naples was annexed. Catholicism had returned to the Peninsula. But all was not well in Christendom, the Ottomons had annexed the Protestant nations of Greece and Epirus ceased to exist. Meanwhile in the Slavic lands the Teutonic order split between it and the Monk society of the Livonian Order.

Although Europe was in chaos, what with Austria and the Spaniards inheriting everything. In Avignon the Archbishop was ecstatic to learn that rebels funded by the Austrian empire had overthrown Bavaria and her ally Augsburg and turned them into a New Salzburg! Patriot rebels appeared en mass the call for the Archbishop's return. Rupert was old though, he could not take another trip back to his homeland after all these years. So he beckoned his manservant to him and asked gently, "Are you versed in the ways of god?" He nodded nervously and stood firm to the Archbishop. "You are to take my place young man, my accomplishes here shall teach you how to rule. Since our nation is stronger now you shall need such teachings." Rupert beckoned to his men who escorted the Man servant to a carriage where he would be dressed and sent to the Capital.

The new lands of Salzburg after it's rebirth.

The Ex-Archbishop coughed irksomely as it became obvious he was in ill health. But he was a proud man so it was not strange he was hiding it to his company. Seven days later he died of a strange "whooping cough"[1].
But elsewhere there was a less somber mood: In Salzburg the people were cheering in the streets and the former rebels united into a new army. They all eagerly awaited Archbishop's arrival. Even things considered strange and/or sinful by hardcore Catholics were being performed, "For the streets flowed with whine and the people were unable to control their urges" reads the words of a scribe of that period (whom also later admits to have done some of the worst things about three sentences down). But as the Archbishop's coach pulled up it became aware to the crowd that the Archbishop was no longer with them. For the man in the cart was not the aged and joyful man whom they had grown to love; it was a young and nervous looking man who could barely fit into his Bishop robes. The army surrounded the cab and began to question them. The Common ones were, "Where is the Archbishop!?" or "What have you done with him?", but soon it became clear. The Old Leader of Salzburg was as the past was, old; and most were sure he was hiding something from the public.

So the long and hard realization that a new age had sadly dawned began to creep over Salzburg. Just as the Year of Morning had that same day.
