Well, in this game I started as Naples and after a massive an really thinked moves, at 1462 I already formed the Italian nation.
Then I conquer almost all my cores and become a great power, but now what? I could become a part of the HRE but nah.... that's would be too easy, so I decided to dismantle the HRE to conquer Europe and as you can see, after many sacrifices (look at the infamy, stability and legitimacy!) I dismantle the HRe in the year 1573.
And after that nothing special, just wars, wars, wars and more wars until 1784 when I stopped!

Actually started as Muscovy in 1492, which is why the countries have the shapes they do (Austria ruling old Burgundy). Those CoTs are all owned by me, and I'm merchantilist. (Spent all my slider moves on westernising, and now the domestic monopoly cash is too juicy to let go of)
Here's my Ottoman Empire in 1438. My goal is to simply take as much land as possible, and I am doing good for only being 40 years in. Currently I only have 10 infamy (thanks to Holy War CB.) Unfortunately, I wanted my borders in the Northwest to be better, but while I was fighting Hungary, Bohemia and Lithuania attacked me and I had to settle with crap borders. (Notice I also own Rome and Venice.)

No, I guess any Italian country can became Italy. You need just several provinces. Milan probably in better position to get them.

Firenze, Siena, Roma, Ancona + cores for all those provences
Lombardia was only added in the most recent patch to my knowledge..
