Cities in Motion - Developer Diary #1 - A Prelude

Cities should develop independently from the player, IMO. "We're there" only to cater to the needs of the citizens, so when a new neighbourhood develops, it'd be our job to connect it properly with the rest of the city. Please, devs, don't make it a simcity, I don't want to be omnipotent in the game :).

The city does grow on its own. The idea of Cities in Motion is to meet the challenges that the growing city brings (a new residential area, for example). So when you notice a change in the city, you should adjust your transport network accordingly.

Will the quality of the transport network have a major influence on the city growth, a minor one or will it be independent ?
Will it be scripted (games have a high chance to be very identical to each other), half-scripted (games can be same at some point) or like total random (all games are different) ?

sounds good - there would be a building sites appearing in new area that city built and new roads well?

My question though is does the city grow absolutely independent of the transport system, which is highly unrealistic for most cities, or does mass-transit in an area encourage more/denser growth? Do cities grow in a pre-scripted way, random, or do the player's actions have ANY influence? In most cities the transit organisations work hand in hand with the city to help plan new growth. History is full of examples where a tram line or railway was built which then allowed expansion of the city.

A perfect example of Baro's comment above is the Metropolitan Line in London. The line penetrated into green fields north of London and development followed around the newly established stations (and the transit company was smart enough to buy property in "Metroland" in advance). While CIM won't allow the player to build, it would be interesting if building started to appear around new stations in the countryside.

A question about graphics cards: Will it run on a Nvidia 8600 GT?

Feb 4, 2011 - The Demo works fine with the card. Still trying to find out how to zoom the display in and out...

Mouse wheel allows zoom
