What happened with these plans?
Technically its still in the mod, only it wont be in tech tree form.

With Hogar we figured that advances in models is not realistic to the situation in the region, only some parts of the armies were upgraded, but actually most of the successor states are behind the true power of 1990 JNA. The successors only used the material they inherited or captured, and have not produced any Yugoslav designed weapons. The only real weapons they "researched" is the new tanks, M90 and M92 in Serbia and Croatia. There was the jet plane prototype, the 'Novi Avion' made in cooperation with Dassault (it actually became the basis for the Rafale).
But I had also searched for negotiations, and various other failed weapon agreements. I found that JNA, and successor states had tried to import a lot of new weapon designs both from the west and the east. Newer AK, BMPs, jets, bombers, armored vehicles...
And obviously there was financial operations by outside powers, to take advantage of the situation. EU invests in the Dalmatian coast for tourism, the Saudis build mosques, Iran bought out industrial designs, Russia funded some industrial-arms complexes, USA made some cheap labor factories, etc...

All of this was the original design in the tech tree, now it will be in decisions and events. Very much like the import units in DH.
Also Hogar is gonna plan Doctrine techs, this is all we would need.

Okay good that we have the military doctrines left but I would like that we also spare "Units", where you upgrade your infantry, motorized, mountain units. Yes I know that all forces used weapons taken from JNA but it would be nice to at least minor improve the stats of the units just to have something to develop. And some variation of the models would be nice. Is it not boring to see the same model pictures in the whole campaign. :unsure:

It was actually a JRH's idea to use events. I've written 3 decisions which are in the game already but not tuned. The idea is that after you have a certain number of a unit type, model = x player gets a decision to open up next mode (x+1).
I've grouped them by IC levels but this is poorly balanced. Have a look at event/misc.txt for details.

Well I like the idea of events and decisions but I would still like that the player is able to upgrade some stuff via techs. I understand that we don't need like for navy or air doctrines but at least it should be able to upgrade certain unit types via events, maybe some rare ones(motorized, armoured, mountaineer) while those the player have a lot of like militia is upgrades via decisions/events. Do you understand what I mean? :eek:o

Our thinking was based on following ideas... All of the Yugoslav republics had more or less the same knowledge how to build weapons or USE them. This is confirmed leter when republics had choice, they did not buy or develop entirely new concepts. Example: Croatia bought MIG21's and Macedonia tanks T72/T55. Reason is not only the price or availability but they had trained staff for it. Bosnia did not build elite well armed units in 1992, not because Bosnians did not know how to build them. It was because they had to push to get more people armed rather then arming few people well. This is the process we need to model!
Once you build enough units of certain type you choose which way you will take your armed forces next.
Another example: Bosnian's first tried to obtain as many mortars as possible. Look at the requests send to Zagreb for arms deliveries. They are all about small arms ammo and mortars. They are not asking for howitzers. Again, this is not because Bosnians did not know how to use them, in fact they knew very well how to make them (and they still do). I hope you see the point.

Technology in that case means very little. Very few advances were made and probably only Croatia developed completely knew factories for mass weapons production, but even that was based on previously acquired knowledge/technologies. We can extend ourselves to create a tech tree but that should really cover doctrines. Some doctrines should unlock some units but we have to make a call which ones. IMO that can only be models that JNA did not have or was only developing them... For me these are various elite units and perhaps HQ (to represent advances in command/communications).
So let's see what JRH comes up with and then we can see which tech could be used to unlock.

I think this is exactly what you want anyway but I wanted to summarise thinking leading to decision. It was not meant to be a lesson.

How do you mean "add up all effects"? Do you want me to just give some ideas of what kind of improvements should be added? Should I find operations, some logistical/military breakthroughs or something else? Have you updated the tech tree on the latest mod version you sent to me?
 
Well, each technology in the path has some effects. Just add them all up and let me know what you think.
You have the latest version and I've made no updates to it.

Common techs are territorial defense and total defense. Other are country specific. See if they are balanced or if you would like more techs inserted.

Yugoslav concept of defence was based on using Territorial Defence units (TO) to slow down enemy while JNA would be used on major enemy attack routes. Idea was that enemy would be slowed down, drawn into attritional war with major units retreating to central parts of the country. Partisan war would be last stage in the conflict and all units were trained in that warfare. TO units were under equipped and manned by Republics.

Territorial Defence is tech is hence known to all sides in the war and represents the basic starting point.
Total Defence is know concept from other mods. Here it is used as a step between JNA and TO units hence only Yugoslavia will start with this tech.
From that point there is a dispersion into 3 branches.

Bosniaks used the terrain into their advantage and had overwhelming manpower. They also had to develop effective way to fight technically superior enemies.
Croats initially used typical TO approach; drawing enemies into cities, slowing down Serbs while in later years tactics depended on superior artillery and special forces.
Serbs developed tactics using its superiority in heavy arms and in later years on mobile defence and quick reaction forces.

Tech tree is meant to model these transitions for each side.

National ideas are similar concept we had in other Paradox games. We wanted to use this to mode AI behaviour and encourage players to achieve these ideas. Here are some possible choices for NIs:
Serbs: Yugoslavia, Great Serbia and Greater Serbia.
Croats: Great Croatia or Greater Croatia

Each major country will have similar tech. I think we would trigger an event adding cores, some event will be influenced by the Ideas, etc...

I think JRH was especially keen on this. I would like this very much as long as we can make it balanced... or these can make non-Serb parties even the odds to win.

With tech teams you mean military leaders and military institutions?

I think JRH was especially keen on this. I would like this very much as long as we can make it balanced... or these can make non-Serb parties even the odds to win.

In short this is an invitation for a volunteer to take over this area... Anyone?

Is JRHINDO still interested to help us with the tech tree? I will see what I can do but I'm unsure if I can code tech tree's.
