Years of Jolly Carnage - A multiplayer AAR from a UK perspective

Starting countries played by humans

UK
France
Nationalist China
Soviet Union
Germany
Italy
Japan

Version: Semper Fi v2

Starting Year: September, 1938.

House Rules: Can change countries within party in the start of each session; Manually “Bitter peace” if Moscow, Stalingrad, Leningrad and Vladivostok is lost; Max 5 fort in area with no starting fort; Max 3 para-divisions each – and a few more smaller and logic ones.

This is the third MP-campaign played by an all Swedish group. The first campaign turned out to be very atypical due to several quite severe noob mistakes from various players. The second MP-campaign is described in the AAR called “Wildfires” – from a Japanese perspective.

This AAR will cover our third campaign. The campaign is ongoing as this AAR starts but I will make sure that the game will be ahead of the AAR with more than a year. For that reason, the posting rate in this AAR will be somewhat slower than the rapid pace that Wildfires-readers got used too.

This AAR will, however, be more detailed. I will focus on the various battlefields were UK takes part but also mention others. The other players may add a few slides, notes or answer questions during the path of the story, but it will not be a mixed AAR. Except following the events, I will also follow the three Monaghan brothers more in detail, describing their various personal experiences. They are part of in game units and will react to events as they unfold. It means that I, when I start write, don’t have a clue of what they will be dragged through.

...................................................

Part I - UK is making plans (planes)

September, 1938.
It was a beautiful autumn in London. The average citizen was happy and unconcerned about global politics. Sure, Japan waged war in Asia and made a mess out of things…. But who cared about China. Nothing could beat the royal Navy anyway. So why bother..?

In a Pub called "the Coal Hole", one of two lads started to talk about Hitler and his national socialists, saying they were a disgrace for the free world, and thus something that the Commonwealth should deal with swiftly. “Really...?” said the other. “We just went through a bloody world war! Nobody wants a new European war.” "European?" teased the first man with a smirk. “Don’t you know about their pact? They are the Axis.” “Axes?” retorted the latter with a sceptical look. “Like a gang of lumberjacks?” “No, you fool. Axis.”

If the talks in the pubs were colored with a low average of knowledge, the high officers and politicians were more worried, and they judged this Adolf Hitler quite differently. They all agreed that they needed to invest a little more into the military but were not quite sure how. Churchill wanted more fleets to secure the oceans. Lord Gort wanted more ground force and talked about armor divisions. Air Marshall Hugh Dowding said that the air force was the most powerful branch of modern warfare. 'If you owned the sky, you could bomb your enemy to oblivion'. Neville Chamberlain dwelled a long while on this.

In the end, he supported Hugh Dowding. Britain should put a little extra effort in the Air Force.

14.jpg

Air Marshal Hugh Dowding

1.jpg

Britain already had quite an amount of tactical bomber squadrons but they were spread all over the world. Air Marshal Dowding called them all home, in order to revise the whole organization. At the same time, they started to build 2 more squadrons of Hurricanes. They were not especially modern and the armament quite light. However, their speed was said to be superior. Anyhow, several teams of scientist and officers started to research how equipment and the skill of personnel could be improved.

15.jpg

Hawker Hurricane

2.jpg

Hugh Dowding assembled the entire Bomber Command in Birmingham. Here, the highest RAF officers tried to rejuvenate their tactics and discuss about how modern warfare best used its bombers, and what kind of bombers. Cyril Newall, however, was firm in the belief that the heavy bombers were the most powerful branch, and that strategically bombing was the fastest way of defeating an enemy. Several, Keith Park maybe the most, claimed that tactical bombers versus troop concentrations were more effective and more humane. In the end, they could not reach consensus but nobody openly opposed Dowdning’s plan to build up a strong Fighter Command which could support Bomber Command – as long as Fighter Commands reason for existence was to protect the bombers.

After the 3-day conference there was a big air show, but all the guns were taken off and there were no talk of war or actually using the bombers officially.

16.jpg

::Amongst the crews in Birmingham was a young man, Joe Monaghan. He was co-pilot on one of Cyril Newall’s Armstrong-Whitworth Whitley’s. Joe didn’t give a shit about the so called peaceful exercise. He knew they’d train for a reason. He knew about the war in Asia and the worries about Germany – and secretly – he longed for war. His father got a medal in the World War. His oldest brother Mark was in the navy and his shit-for-brains mid-brother, an ox-shouldered bully, was in the infantry. Or the “motorized” infantry as Dick called it and tried to make in sound better. Infantry? Who the heck wanted to be in the bloody infantry? That was just because Dick was a stupid sack of wind. Joe was a flyer. He knew he was going to be a hero.::

Ah,first one in.:)

This is a good scenario..it starts from 38 so less of a massive axis buildup, but no american player..so evens out of sorts also no rapid chinese fall.

I would rather that u focused on armour to kick the italians on the belly.
Larrge Airforces can get too tedious in mp aars.
But expansion of hurricanes seems a good step.

Really looking forward to this.

Hi,

I'm on the US east coast now, and have experience with MP. If you could use a Canada player send me a line.

Nice to see you are in :) Always interestig with readers with contructive comments. We'll see about those armors. And I don't think I'll get a rediculous amount of airforces as, just as ju say, its tedious in MP games as you can't press paus all the time (or actually not at all).

For the moment, we are in mid 1940 and its already a very interesting and turbulent game. I think it will be a dramatic AAR.

Hey, Valentinan. Nice that u wanna join. Unfortunately, we are not recruiting for the moment. Actually, it seems 7 players almost are too much already as it is tricky to get dates when everybody can play. If anybody drops off I'll post a vacancy allert in this thread. Hope u stick to the AAR. The action will start very soon...

Part II – The War in Asia and a little bit of politics

Authors Note: Japan and Nationalist China both have human players. As there is no interesting Ally to play for the time being, except UK and France which are already taken, we decided that this player should play Nat. China, at least until Poland are an Ally.

4.jpg

September 14th, 1938

Japan has widened their offensive from Nationalist China to Guanxi Clique. It did not seem like the Chinese had much to throw at the Japanese forces. The British garrison in Hong Kong could only stand and watch in their binoculars how Japanese troops conquered everything around them. It was actually quite worrying as Britain and Japan’s relation was far from good.

6.jpg

September 20th, 1938

After a meeting between ambassadors from Nationalist China and Britain, it was decided that Nationalist China would try to get Communist China into the conflict, on the Chinese side. National China felt hard pressed and needed help.

Perhaps Japan did wait for just this to happen because they quickly launched a powerful attack against Communist China, who rather quickly lost the outer part of its small mountainous nation.

Nationalist China came to support their brothers but realized how little their effort paid off. The Japanese forces were so strong.

9.jpg

October 17th, 1938

The Chinese resistance was futile and Communist China gave up and accepted Japanese leadership (became puppets). At least, they did not turn against their former allies. All the same, it was a quite disastrous turn of events.

Authors note: We hadn’t realized that supply rules were kinder in Semper Fi than in v1.4. With my own experiences from playing Japan in last game I thought Japan was in for a hard fight – but instead – China fell quickly and the Nat. China-player had still not seen any “lack-of-supply” symbol on the Japanese forces in any combat. Knowing this, it was a mistake to call in Communist China.

18.jpg

Nothing seems to stop the Japanese infantry.

10.jpg

At the same dark day, the 17th of October, Germany annexed Czechoslovakia. Many Brits, Joe Monaghan among them, thought that Britain should declare war on Germany and deal with this maniac – Adolf Hitler. The Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, thought not. He said “Peace in our time” and waved a piece of paper. Joe was not impressed. Neither was the Czechs – but nobody seemed to care.

19.jpg

Neville Chamberlain

11.jpg

October 18th, 1938

Either way – peace or no peace – things changed in the British society. Now, everybody knew who Adolf Hitler was. His name was on many lips – often together with a curse. Normal things, like milk and sugar, were suddenly a little more expensive. And prices on cars… don’t even talk about it.

12.jpg

October 18th, 1938

And at the same time, maybe to avoid being called a coward, Neville promised that Britain would aid the Poles if Germany did anything to threat their autonomy. The question was – would he live up to the promise?

13.jpg

November 1st, 1938

Japan gained ground quickly. Nationalist China stands little chance and loses every battle. Hope quickly vanishes from the Chinese leadership. This worried the Brits a lot as they hoped that China would keep Japan occupied for a long time. Would Japan be satisfied after China? Probably not.

Authors Note: The player playing China now shifted from China (being in a quite bad mood) and started to play Poland.

...............

In part III we will see some nations being erased

The loss of China is a medium bone crusher for the Allies side, so every respect to the japanese supreme commander - no doubt they had recognized the significance of the airfields there. China led by a human is always a great opportunity for the Allies... however, the big decisions are still coming. Keep on!

Very nice from the axis, copybook axis blitzkreig.Without tanks too.
Japan is very important in this regard because of the possibilities, india ,russia, the pacific.
U know if f germany attacks russia, britain must make sure it attacks japn in china.Otherwise the japanese player will attack russia at will and the russian player will be unable to pay much attention there due to the massive barbarossa preoccupation.Which usually means a collapse on the russian eastern front and a japanese race to the urals.Britain must attack japan in china to make sure the japanese can't do this without having to engage in a two front war himself which is difficult without pausing.

This was my first SF game and I was unaware of the might of the Imperial Japanese Army. The expected supply problems were not seen. In addition, my Org regain rate was extremely slow. The Communist China experience was a complete disaster as the troops there left their defendable positions for a "Long March" through Nat China.

Having taken the greatest beating I've had in a very long time, I abandoned ship and left for the peace and quiet in Eastern Europe. After all, with the UK guaranteeing my independence, what could possible threaten Poland's existence?

well, that's paradox' interpretation of a huge, but weak army - no officers. And any unit you built makes it even worser, same with the SU.
So good luck than!

On the other hand - with a player on Japan, China's destiny is sealed already. Still, I was surprised they didn't get supply problem. I kind of liked that in 1.4, that supply problems came easy. It gave another level of difficulty to overcome, which also felt realistic. Havn't seen that at all in SF which is somewhat of a disappointment. Or whaddya think, Wuff?

You know, Austerlitz, that was me going to the Urals as Japan, remember? ;) Anyways, I'll see what I can do to please you when the time comes :)

@Daphne....try ur best with poland.though u might have switchd a little late.
@cpt easy..ha yes that was u.Anyways britain will have to do the heavy lifting in this one until the bear enters the scene. And hopefully guy playing russia is a good one. That would make a great game.

That's right - best for the SU in case of an eastern, second attack is a strategic retreat, best done _before_ the disaster arrives. They aren't so many important recources and industry/population centres directly at the pacific, apart of Vladivostok of ourse. The Axis, in theory :), gain very little, just a few barrels of oil.
On the other hand, there are few airports and the rivers/mountains at the western border to manschuko provides a very good defense. Japan has a hard time storming places against the odd soviet tank and without fightercover (not enough reach). Of course, a suddenly surprise attack is ... the beginning of the end?
Logistically bombing is only one option for the russian, I would exspect a stalemate - in favour for the Allies' side. :)

We had a bit more luck. :)
On the one hand we saw Panzer III, but on the other side two or three US licenced interceptors...
The Chinese had a tremendeous high practical of milita, 50 IIRC. As it is 1937, GAR had a comparably very high firepower in cmparision to the jap. INF and don't suck so many officers. We ended with around 100 GAR-Brigades and could just achieved 100% officers, which provided a _very_ long stand at the yellow river. But every game differs and it's always quite hard to react properly; we had the big advantage of a some vacant PCs so burning points and decisive battles could be doupled with humans.

@ Daphne
there's a tremendeous aar by mnplastic about poland, very enjoyable

Over level 3 forts are gamey i feel. Can they be busted by installation strikes?
Also log bombing is bugged.
Still looking forwards to the actions, are u playing wuffer?

@Captain ;we could use an update...hopefully a big one.:D

@Daphne....try ur best with poland.though u might have switchd a little late.

He's didn't have no choice. Our house rules sais that we can only play ALLIED countries (except N.China ;)) so he switched to Poland as quick as he could. Poland was not part of the Allies until now.

Some good advices there. I'll make sure the Russian player gets to read them :)

Sure thing. Just returned from a weekend in the woods. Update coming within hours.

::Richard Monaghan though he lived in interesting times. After Germany’s annexation of whatever-the-crap-country-was-called, Dick’s battalion had been moved closer to London. They were now based together with the rest of the division – and that was not the end of it. There were several other divisions around. The entire Army Group was assembled. What could that mean? Rumors said that a fleet, big enough to carry the entire Army Group lay moored in Dover. The question was, though, where were they expected to be carried too? Well, Dick didn’t plan to get caught unawares and made sure his rifle was cleaned and oiled. He wasn’t the one to fail when moment of truth was upon him.::

7.jpg

November 21st, 1938

::Mark Monaghan was a calm and orderly man. His brothers were a wild bunch and satisfied with lives as grunts. Mark, on the other hand, had the skill and the brains. After eight years in the navy, he commanded his own ship. It was just a destroyer, but still. As a commander, he got to see a lot of the intel that other didn’t. He knew, for instance, that the Royal Navy thoroughly studied the German coast and tried to map both where their navy was and how strong each port was defended. Mark didn’t know what to make out of it, but as he heard from his mother that Dick, his roughneck middle brother, and his motorized division had assembled south of London, he could calculate quite a few things. Did they really plan to attack Germany itself? Mark always thought that Britain would support France by actually being IN France. But support the Poles? Really? Mark doubted that, but wasn’t sure. The headquarter was really interested in the German coast.

Apparently, Germany and Japan were not the only members in the Axis with ambitions. The signs seem to be clearer. These scoundrel-nations are hungry. Hungry for land. Hungry for… what did Hitler always say… lebensraum.

3.jpg

January 4th, 1939

Guanxi Clique surrenders. That means that China lost the support of their southern flank. As if it mattered. They are losing ground fast already. It is not a question if they will fall. It is not even a question when… A Chinese diplomat put his desperation in a very sophisticated way.

- I fear I will not see the cherry tree blossom again as a Chinese.

4-1.jpg

February 4th, 1939

Axis is reinforced with yet another nation. This is worrying indeed. In the British parliament the discussions in more and more agitated. A majority thinks Neville Chamberlains peace-talks rings foul and he keeps losing support.

5.jpg

Trying desperately to keep the country out of war, but still conciliating the parliament enough to keep his chair, Neville signs a new policy on economy and industry. The country will now prepare for war but still without actually being in one.

::Joe Monaghan got to hear it from the tellie in the bar in the mess hall outside the airfield in Birmingham. He had already been drinking a couple of beers, smoking a few woodbines and the shout from his friends, watching the man reading the news, actually disturbed him as he was flirting with the waitress in the bar. Her name was Shanti and she was the talk of the squadron. Joe felt he was close at getting something to happen with her and the first second he was annoyed about the cries of his friends – bet then he actually saw the news. Soon he shouted with the other pilots and tossed his cap in the air.

- We’re going to Berlin! We’re going to give Hitler a message he wont forget!

He turned to Shanti and winked an eye.

- Shanti. This night will go to history. I am glad I’m sharing it with you.

Shanti smiled back at him. Joe could swear there was a new kind of luster in her eye and he leant over the bar to kiss her.::

6-1.jpg

March 7th, 1939

Finally, after a very uneven battle, Nationalist China was crushed and annexed by Japan. Japan had destroyed most of the resistance but still had one small nation left to defeat…

7-1.jpg

Xibei San Ma was still left, as the last splinter of Chinas allies. Nobody thought that this little low tec inland nation could do anything to hurt Japan though.

8-1.jpg

In good ol’ Britain, the bomber squadrons started to leave Birmingham to get placed in various air fields from which they quickly could strike at different targets. The Handley Page Hampten-planes from 1936, or “the flying suit case” as their crew called them due to their cramped design, was a modern plane and as good as anything the German could possibly have. If they dared a war… they would pay.

9-1.jpg

The Handley Page Hampden

10-1.jpg

March 29th, 1939

The Brits are weak in North Africa. The bulk of their troops are in the south of Britain, waiting for a secret operation. Still, by the look of it, Italy is not too strong either. Hopefully, Italy will not be interested in any war… (Yeah, right…)

11-1.jpg

April 8th, 1939

There something in the air. People are not laughing anymore when they joke about kicking Hitler’s butt. They have started to feel that it really IS going to happen… and maybe Hitler is not really letting his ass get kicked very easy. France is manning the Maginot line. From there they can even see the Germans. What’s interesting is that they have seen several garrison-divisions marching up to man the West wall. That means rather weak forces with close to no flexibility.

British, French and Polish diplomats are comes together for a very important meeting, initiated by Winston Churchill who have just taken over after Neville Chamberlain who retired for “private” reasons. Churchill is certain that Germany will attack Poland, and he himself is not the guy to sit back and wait for the enemy to come to him. Instead, he has been designing an Operation that just might deliver a serious blow to the Jerries. Operation Trident.

Shortly after Germany's attack on Poland. France will attack the West wall and Britain will do dual landing in Northern Germany. This three-front attack (questionable if Poland will be able to attack…) have two main goals.

  • Tie up German forces, delaying the doom of Poland and thus, giving France longer time to prepare

  • Test for weaknesses. If Germany have any weakness in his defense it will be found and taken advantage of – whatever it might be

1-2.jpg

April 9th to 23rd, 1939

During April, more and more signs came that the Germans were preparing for something. There were troop movement by the Polish border and submarines patrolling around Denmark. One after one, the Allied countries mobilized to be prepared if the Germans tried to pull something of. Maybe that would be enough to scare them back to peaceful behavior (probably…).

........................................................................

Authors note: Now, Germany's move. Anybody wanna guess what's gonna happen?

Last edited:
I'm guessing an invasion of denmark to secure the baltic coast. And what is the axis player doing with garrisons?
Intriguing update daring plan i must say.But actually defending poland does u no good.It prevents opening germany's backdoor to the russian bear.Ur only goal should be to bleed him. and hold france at all costs.

Part IV – WAR!

Authors note: Players are UK, FRA, POL, SU, GER, ITA, JAP

2-2.jpg

During the end of April, several British research and training programs were finished. Now the fighter-pilots that Dowding put so much fate in would be up to better standards. Also, to please Newall, the strategic bomber crews had gone through tests and training. If just the fighters could keep the sky free of Luftwaffe, then Newall’s Withleys would bomb the German cities back to the Stone Age.

::It had been hectic days for Joe Monaghan. They had spent hours and hours in the class room, studying navigation relate issues while the guys actually dropping the bombs studied maps taken from above and trained to tell the difference between different possible targets and civilian buildings. They also did a few training runs dropping real weight bombs without charges on big X:es made on cloth out on fields. It was good training and they all learned quite a lot. It was quite tiresome though. Joe was the energetic type and all the reading in books sometimes made him irritated. Oh, how he wanted this war to get started so he could get out there and do the real thing. No more boring classrooms. However, he had started to get somewhere with Shanti, and he hoped to at least get all the way with her before Hitler made his move. Shanti always asked where he would be based if the war came. If? What a question. Of course it was gonna come. He had no answer. He lied and said that he would be based in Birmingham for sure. She liked that. That night he got to kiss her properly. He threw a toast to his first-pilot, Bill, and their beer-bottle rang out as they met. Joe smiled wolfishly.::

- Hear this pray. For a while, Hitler, holster your gun; So I get the time, for that final run.

As he said “run” he winked is eye and nodded towards Shanti who was busy in the bar. Bill made a short laugh and drank deep from the bottle.::

4-2.jpg

May 1st, 1939

The Allies could feel the war drawing near. The Germans were clearly positioning themselves. Apparently, Denmark would be a target in the near future. That could affect the British part of Operation Trident.

5-1.jpg

May 2nd, 1939

Still, the danger seemed not to be immediate at the Polish border. A powerful army group, including the famous general Erwing Rommel, was visible in the north, obviously waiting for a march-order. British intelligence also noted paratroopers and immediately warned their Polish brother-in-arms. These days were full of intense worry.

6-2.jpg

May 4th, 1939

Now we know for sure there will be blood. German will not back down.

7-2.jpg

May 9th, 1939

At this date, Germany put forwards a terrible ultimatum to Poland. Give us Danzig or face war. As the German forces had lined up along the Polish border their government got hubris and accepted the humiliating terms. They gave up Danzig. The president received a lot of hatred from his people.

Authors note: As we hadn’t played Poland before we were actually surprised that we got to chose – Danzig or war. We thought it was a fixed event that led to war. Allies had a very quick discussion – as the clock was ticking – and decided it best to accept the terms. Sometime later, we all agreed that it was a bad move from the perspective of an even game. But as we had the discussion too late to load an auto save we decided to continue. Later, we agreed on lowering Germans threat somewhat – and make a house rule for later games that Poland must oppose the German demand.

8-2.jpg

May 14th, 1939

Instead, satisfied for the moment in the east – Germany suddenly attacked Denmark. The Danish defense was weak and major general Steiner could blitz straight in with his light panzers.

9-2.jpg

May 22nd, 1939

Roughly a week later Germany conquered the northern port with an amphibious landing. After having slight problems taken Faaborg, the German offensive continued. The Allies were passive – but very worried.

10-2.jpg

May 27th, 1939

Copenhagen falls after short battle.

11-2.jpg

May 28th, 1939

Denmark throws down their arms and surrender. Germany annexes Denmark.

12-1.jpg

After the fall of Denmark, the British ground forces are on full alert. The German declaration of war against Poland cannot be far. With the fall of Denmark, the flexibility for a British amphibious attack on Germany had gone down to almost zero. The attack must instead be against Wilhelsmhafen – which is quite easy for the German leadership to foresee.

::Richard Monaghan was part of, and very proudly so, the 1st Infantry Division under major general Harold Alexander. They were acting under near-war routines, with guard duty or training most of the days and no free time outside the camp. During night, a minimum of lamps were lit. It was gray, rainy and quite miserable days. The war did not appear quite so adventurous anymore and they hoped that Hitler at least would wait until the weather got better so the Brits could beat the crap out of Fritz during summertime. It would be better that way. Dick was discussing this with his mate Johnny as they sat in a roofed guard-post beside the main gate. The rain was hammering down around them and even though they didn’t get it on their heads they felt all damp and cold. Johnny had a dying fag in his mouth, trying to suck the last warmth out of it while Dick argued along and decided that if anybody could beat the Fritzes real quick – then that would be friggin’ Harold bloody Alexander and his 1st Infantry.::

13-1.jpg

Major General Harold Alexander (a little more than major general on the picture though...)

14-1.jpg

June 1st, 1939

Alas, Germany declared limited war against Poland. This was it! Britain and France followed suit and quickly declared war on Germany. Admiral Sommerville had already been keeping track of a wolf pack and when he got the news that Britain and Germany was at war – he immediately attacked the obviously surprised submarine crews who were quickly dealt with. Only a few U-boats got away. This was the first blood and Britain was victorious. This resulted in a huge blood lust in the ranks of the British militaries. They all wanted a piece of the glory!

At this point, Operation Trident was launched.

Next - Operation Trident

Ah i love this.proactive british move, hopefully the french will launch an attack as well and poland will hold up german troops too. This might be ur window of oppurtunity .I was a little disappointed though with how the german player had so few divisions.I was expecting a horde.
Looking forward eagerly towards the next update.
