I kind of agree with the gradual approach to be honest, sure, it makes this AAR bit boring as all I seem to do is fight Prussia, but, well, sigh, still it does, in somewhat limited historical sense, make sense..

But now I actually have a problem, I've played the 'next few years' already, but I'm having hard time deciding what I'd bother to write about it...
Is there some specific subject of the Austrian Empire you'd like to be covered at this point? Of course, it's just 1872 now so not all that much has changed since those intermission posts in overall situation, but well...
...and I also have a problem with the fact that the interesting bit won't fit into the 10 chapters admissable to the contest, but I guess I can't cheat my way out of that... =)

If that war between the CSA and the USA is still going on, or if the US still exists... HELP THEM! Don't let the Mexicans and rednecks rule North America!

Now now, Mexicans and Dixies ain't quite strong enough to be said to rule there yet...
But it seems the war has ended in Status Quo again, still, I'm confident the situation there will eventually be resolved, they are were stubborn over there...
...but I could hardly help some democrats, only proper Monarchs may receive Austrian support.
And welcome to the forum :D

You could make a update that focusses on the political situation of the other GP´s that are competing with you,
or one that focusses on the internals, like where your poulation is and what they do,
how they have changed (or not), something about industry or politics or building...
of course all that are just suggestions :)

Firstly, thank you for the warm welcome. Second, perhaps a powerful ally in NA could in the future deter British meddling in your affairs.

Alexspeed; I like the idea about great powers' political situations, but weirdly enough, there hasn't been any coups yet, only slightly interesting note that I could find is that Labour(socialists) has been elected in the United Kingdom... France and Prussia have gone liberal, rest remain as they began with, yes, Ottomans still have reactionaries of all things, and my, even the 8 great powers have returned to, Uk, France, Russia, Austria, USA, Prussia, Ottomans, Spain... That sounds a lot like it was when the game started (USA and Prussia changed spots), this is bizarre....
...and thou 10year period may sound a lot, not that much has happened, hm, I'll try to cook something up, got a small bit written already, but let's see if I can find anything else interesting...

BigBadBob; Surprisingly, I'm in quite good terms with the Brits, indeed, interfering 'with their colony' might even upset them more, but there's a few lines about the USA in next chapter, that much I can promise...

Chapter Nine

During the next 10 years it felt like Europe had returned to the time from after the Napoleonic wars, there was not a single conflict between European nations. Of course, this did not stop colonial ambitions or, indeed, internal conflicts. Russians were active in Arabian peninsula, annexing Nejd around 1875 and then seeking to acquire Hedjaz into their empire as well in 1881. France was busy seeking some new land as well, annexing kingdom of Kalat to double the size of 'French India'. In Africa around 1880, Ethiopians were under attack from both Egypt, seeking to reclaim Asmara region, and Spain who was just seeking to test some new weaponry. Now these conflicts were mostly insignificant, at least when compared to the event in the ever continuing conflict in northern America. The previous conflict had ended in Status Quo around 1874. After this, the United Kingdom sought to claim New England back from USA, but lacked proper effort and failed. Soon the Confederates, emboldened by their past successes and appraised weakening of Northern Army from their war against Red Coats, sought to 'liberate' Missouri. However, this turned out to be just a bit overambitious, and the Northeners soon asserted their intention to, once again, unify the north and south by force of arms. (World as of november 1881)

1881world.png

Austria spent the decade mostly swatting rebels, domestic and foreign, especially the occasional Pan-German nationalists were thoroughly weeded out from any nation we could gain access into. Clearly, monarchy was losing it's support, and citizens wished for futher rights to meddle in rulers affairs, this, of course, could not be allowed, after all, under half the citizens could even read, and those that could read weren't much better informed. In technological front, advances were mostly in ship building and weaponry for the 1870'ies, with focus turning towards chemistry in early 1880'ies. However, despite the improved understanding of modern ships, the expansion of fleet was canceled and no capitalist was willing to invest into streamer building without goverment purchases.

1880rebels.png

Matter of Congo had come up during the 1870'ies and while Leopold of Belgium had been busy securing 'private deals' in the area, it wasn't until 1880 when the United Kingdom called conference on the Congo issue that the issue was finally settled, indeed, in favor of Belgium, mostly to prevent expansion of French interestes, which the Brits saw as a growing threath. We civilized Austrians of course would have nothing to do with some uncivilized wildmen and let the people interested in colonial affairs settle their own affairs, as if the independence movements in Americas weren't lesson enough not to stray outside Europe.

1880congo.png

In 1875 Austria hosted a Regional Trade Fair, allowing for return to normal relations with north German states. This would futher allow us to improve relations with a few of them, and indeed, turn some from Prussia to support Austria.

1875fair.png

By late 1881, we had managed to convince Holstein, Hesse-Kassel and Nassau to switch sides, Prussia maintained some support among the minors, but their sphere was now scattered and largely inside Austrias. Also worth noting that there are, once again, Pan-Germans in control of Saxe's. When both Saxon states declined to allow Austria military access despite this, certain Jingoist circles in court used this opportunity to convince Francis Joseph that the rebels were actually paid and equipped by Prussia. Quite used to the regular 'real politik' of Prussia, this was an easy sale to the Emperor, and thus a war was declared once again on Prussia in November of 1881. (View of the split of german states before the war)

1881sphere.png

As Austria could now field 12 standing Armee's, and had added some Guard regiments into it's force mix, raised from the most loyal among the minorities, indeed, they could almost be considered proper Austrians by now. True Austrians, of course, still only served in cavalry and artillery. And indeed, Prussia could hardly be any stronger after all we had done to weaken them already, and thus a decisive battle was sought by Theodor Steeb from the beginning, when he took 3 Armee's into Berlin against the strongest Prussian concentration.

1882berlin.png

Another battle took place in Kustrin, this one very expensive in lives, but still nominally Austrian victory as after reinforcements, we managed to drive the Prussians away. The Prussians from Berlin were chased into Pritzwalk, and defeated second time.

1882followup.png

By March, the war in east was still unresolved, but since there hadn't really been any Prussian troops in the west, Austrian and South German troops were occupying Prussia, and indeed, recovering those states where rebels had taken control.

1882sitrep.png

There was a cluttering of minor battles after this, mostly with Prussians hastly withdrawing, to conserve their strenght, indeed, Austrian armies had to return back to Austrian side of border to recover from all the losses incurred by fighting on Prussian soil, but the grand battle of the war was fought in september. A year later, in september of 1883 Prussians finally agreed to the harsh terms Francis Joseph demanded, indeed, to make them appear bit less harsh, instead of outright conquest of Posen, independence of Poland was restored, to a minor one state nation surely, but still a relatively independent entity. Oh, and the United States of America were once again united in fact as well.

1882kustrin.png

P.S. yes, that was unusually hasty war even for me, not to mention the peace time, but this was awfully dull period where I spent all my time with diplomacy and forgot to take lot of screenies of the war too, so well, it was a boring war anyways...

Great update thank you! :)

I want a screenshot of Poland :D

I don't understand why people love Poland so much but ah well =)
...bit into the future, 1884 was my next savegame...

1882poland.png

Actually i wanted to see how the color fits with the rest around it because i hadnt had seen it jet in "action" ;)
Thank you for the screenshot! :)

Ahh, as to that, South German (con)Federation is awfully similar in color with Austria, slightly more grey but it's bit difficult to make the difference.

Woot! The USA triumphs again, but those pesky Southerners still seem to be independent. Shame.

Pst, it was there in the end, by the time my war ended, USA was unified as well.

Thank you for the mention, noted :)

I am not normally madly interested in Poland, but was a bit surprised to see it there. How did it get created?

I demanded it's release as peace settlement, I was bit worried about infamy, I'm not sure if it was reasonable worry, but still....
Releasing a province of poland only gave 4 infamy (iirc) compared to 10 infamy of taking it myself, warscore wise it was 48 or so when I added it though, not exactly cheap to release nations in this manner it seems...
I also expected to absorb it to Germany once it gets formed....

In 1884, a movement for unification of Scandinavia rebelled in Jylland, and began to gain momentum inside Denmark. So far it had been Austrian policy not to interfere with internal affairs of others, but while official position was still against pan-germanism, sprouts of nationalism were forming within the court. Thus Austrian military moved into Denmark to quell those Scandinavists, surprisingly Christian IX the king of Denmark did not welcome the intervention that was practically in his behalf. This lead to rather interesting negotiations once Austian armees had occupied Denmark in 1885, eventually forcing Denmark to transfer control of mostly german Slesvig-Holstein area to Austria. Just to prevent it from falling into sphere of the possible Scandinavion nation that apparently also had support within Danish court...
In other news, artificial electric lighting was now helping to extend the work day in our factories.

1885denmark.png

Meanwhile, in Modena, a pan Italian movement had gained a foothold, Austria considered this a minor event, after all, Modena wasn't even part of the Austrian commonwealth. However, by 1885 Garibaldi's movement had gained immense support and when they suggested that Italy be united under house of Savoy, Victor Emmanuel II took the chance and to surprise of rest of Europe, united Italy was formed. They also made some claims of the properly Austrian province of Lombardy, but had no military strenght to push for those.

In 1886 a revolution against the monarchy was attempted, but as army remained loyal to Francis Joseph, it was put down with blood, as was the second attempt to force the monarch to relinquish power to the people a year later.

1886rebel.png

On the other side of the pond, the United States of America had declared a war on Mexico over a bunch of their border states after they'd succesfully include confederacy back into the federation. It seems, that their war machine was well oiled, as they rolled over the Mexicans and USA was quite a bit larger now than it used to be.

1888usa.png

To go along with that, map of Europe after recent wars and unification of Italy.

1888europe.png

The year of 1888 was time of quiet celebration within the empire, as Austria was now considered the sole great power in Germany, Prussia having fallen from grace after it's continuous inability to defeat Austria. The United Kingdoms position as most powerful nation was uncontested, yet the strugle between France, Russia and Austria now had an ambitious upstart seeking to join the fray, as the USA had risen in influence. But the real change had happened when unified Italy and Kingdom of Netherlands had overtaken Spain and Prussia.

1888greatpow.png

Austria was also taking giant leaps in technological development, however, in comparison to say France or United Kingdom, we were still quite a bit behind in general, though well ahead in some specific fields. Indeed, it's bit suprising how slow the British have been... (Austrian research in pictures, French levels marked with blue F, United Kingdom with red B)

1888tech.png

After Prussia's fall, Austria naturally gained clear advantage with the north German minors. Yet while the idea of taking advantage of the pan German sentiments was strong within the court, it was felt that Austria still lacked the moral authority to bend rest of Germany to it's will. The obvious choise to make transformation from bully within Germany to great unifier of German peoples was to free the people of Elsass-Lothringen from French oppression. Thus, in May, Austrian armies crossed the border into France supported by SGF and Swizz who immediately mobilized as did the French. Austria had never taken such extreme measures, and did not feel them necessary this time either. Belgium and Brazilia stood alongside the French, but Netherlands, that had also been allied with the French, chose to dishonor their alliance rather than risk confrontation with Austria.

1888dow.png

With battle of Nancy growing to unpreceded size, mostly from French and South German conscripts, and growing numbers of French along the front, not to mention rebels from within, even Austria was forced to mobilize it's poor into a rag tag army of sorts, they'd obviously be kept as reserve and mainly occupation force while real soldiers would do the heavy fighting. While Austrian foothold in France was rather solid, French invasion of Switzerland was alarming, leading to establishing an 'encirclement' around Swizz border by the Austrian conscripts, in preparation to support the Swizz and to stop French from getting all the way to Austrian proper.
