    I've done a bit of experimenting myself. I have created hre events that add claims based on owning specific provinces and/or reaching a certain level of imperial influence or reform. For example, I gave myself cores on the Iberian peninsula once the Reconquista languished for too long (in this case, Portugal broke free as a Sunni nation [which seems to happen a lot in the games I've played] and became a successor state to Cordoba). There are lots of old claims that especially the HRE can dredge up as the successor state to the Roman Empire, the Merovengians, the Carolingians. The HRE screen seems to me to be the proper place to put these events, though maybe national events. It would be possible to create a chain of such "march" events to retake places lost to western Christianity.

    I don't mean to step on Tuore's toes here. He has done a great job on this mod. It is really the only way I play EU3 any more. (1399, man that's too recent). Those of us who have accomplished a great deal might develop acute megalomania and require some legitimate means for marching our armies from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Indian Ocean. (I among them). So I have some comments on how I have made my own additions to the Dark Years.

    National decisions are not that hard to craft that would give you a load of cores. Or events. I have thought of posting some of the ones I have for the united HRE (okay, I now am undisputed master of Germany, now what?), based on the vanilla events for HRE unification (full revocation of privileges, etc.), that gives core any/all on Italy, for instance. The trick is doing this progressively; too many unowned cores gives you prestige penalties. After consolidating your rule over the eastern Balkans, you could work up such an event or decision to give yourself claims to the western Balkans (that is, up the eastern Adriatic practically to Vienna). And then, as the old saying goes, all roads lead to Rome! Would you like some help on this?

    I have ideas for such decisions, especially one where after conquering the Balkans you get a decision giving cores in the Levant area.

    Breakup of East Francia--some thoughts

    I have given some thought to the breakup of East Francia after playing a few games as EAF. Historically, the duchies of Swabia, Lorraine, and Bavaria rose during the early reign of Louis the Child (who should start under a regency, btw) as margravates that were not originally heritable. I do not read German, so I have relied on en.wikipedia.org for my history. The Leopoldings rose to prominence in Bavaria in 903, and a scion of the Conradine dynasty administered Lothrinigia from 907. In game terms, I wonder if it would be better to have an event (MTTH of 7 years or so from 900) to grant these duchies their independence or integrate them into EAF.

    To be as close to history as possible, ideally there would be a form of government that would revert the territory to the Crown after the incumbents death (or a set length of time), but I don't know how to do that without a triggered event with a country_flag. Historically, this happened in particular in Swabia and Lothrinigia. The Saxons were always very autonomous by contrast. Any ideas on how to implement a non-heritable grant of land? Such a system would also be applicable to other parts of Europe, similar to Iberian encomienda but on a bigger scale.

    In addition, is there a way to set up an electoral system, by which the winning candidate for emperor would become ruler of EAF/HRE, if the ruling dynasty dies out? The Dark Years already has such an event for the 911 death of Louis the Child, but is there a way to generate it by regular event?

    A government type with the "republic = yes" flag set would do the trick.

    Lightbulb Escheat -- Because resistance is feudal

    I worked up an event based on the feudalistic notion of escheat--that ruling families who die out have their lands revert back to their liege. The trigger is on_new_monarch, being a subject nation, and crowning an heir with less than average incoming legitimacy. Let me know what you think.

    What you need to do: The trick is to add the event number to the on_new_monarch entry in on_actions.txt in your \common folder. I have been using it in my EAF game, and it works historically for the HRE above all, though of course there could be game balance issues, given the difficulty of HTTT monarchs to produce legitimate heirs...

    Code:
    country_event = {

    	id = 11900

    	is_triggered_only = yes

    	trigger = {
    		is_subject = yes
    		government = monarchy
    		NOT = { legitimacy = 50 }
    		}

    	title = "EVTNAME11900"
    	desc = "EVTDESC11900"

    	option = {
    	name = "EVTOPTA11900"
    	ai_chance = { factor = 100 }
    	overlord = {
    		country_event = 11901
    		}
    	}

    	option = {
    	name = "EVTOPTB11900"
    	ai_chance = { factor = 0 }
    	stability = 1
    	}
    }

    country_event = {

    	id = 11901

    	is_triggered_only = yes

    	title = "EVTNAME11901"
    	desc = "EVTDESC11901"

    	option = {			#Keep it for ourselves
    	name = "EVTOPTA11901"
    	ai_chance = { factor = 30 }
            inherit = THIS
    	limit = { is_emperor = yes }
    	add_imperial_influence = 5
    	}

    	option = { #Let the new dynasty keep the fief
    	name = "EVTOPTB11901"
    	ai_chance = { factor = 40 }
    	prestige = 5.0
    	relation = { who = THIS value = 100 }
    	}
    }
    Now for the localisation:

    Code:
    EVTNAME11900;Escheat;;;;;;;;;;;;;x
    EVTDESC11900;With the expiration of our dynastic line, the Emperor demands that we return our ancestral lands to the imperial demesne;;;;;;;;;;;;;x
    EVTOPTA11900;Fine. We have no choice;;;;;;;;;;;;;x
    EVTOPTB11900;I fought my way to this throne!;;;;;;;;;;;;;x
    EVTNAME11901;Our Right of Escheat;;;;;;;;;;;;;x
    EVTDESC11901;Our vassal, the Lord of $FROMCOUNTRY$, died intestate. His chancellor has returned his land to the imperial demesne;;;;;;;;;;;;;x
    EVTOPTA11901;Good to know;;;;;;;;;;;;;x
    EVTOPTB11901;Let them keep this worthless piece of land;;;;;;;;;;;;;x

    Maybe you should switch the location of the "inherit = this" line. Currently you have the choices being: surrender your land (trigger event and lose country) or gain +1 STAB --> gain stuff or improve relations. With what? The country you would gain relation with was annexed by the previous event. Maybe you should switch "inherit = this" from the first event to the second. Other than that, it looks like a good idea.

    Thanks, Tuore. Feel free to use it as is or modify for next release. I have added the HRE events and decisions from SRI, so redistributing fiefs is good for maintaining imperial authority.

    I just started playing with the byzantine and i am enjoying it

    i only have a few problems

    the infamy is huge so how do i suppossed to get jurusalem back (havent got any missions for it ) if i am eventualy able to take on the muslim world

    but i gues that isnt a problem

    also i would like to spread the greek culture but since i have no colonist i cant do setllement policy

    another thing is that i dont get moddifiers for wen i try to intergrate
    i have several non core provinses with greek culture but the dont get a modifier that confirms that

    i 'll gues that i will play some further to sea of any of the provinces actually cores after 75 years (50 are past now)

    i actually really like this mod

    You need to get one of the casus belli available, I haven't been involved with the Byzzies so I don't know which are available, but once the crusades begin I think Byzantium gains a CB, do you not have the Holy War CB?

    also i would like to spread the greek culture but since i have no colonist i cant do setllement policy
    You aren't supposed to have colonists, to prevent unrealistic expansion into the New World, but that could do with being fixed, I'll include something with my crusades for the spread of Greek culture back into the Muslim world (and vice versa).

    Known bug, it should be fixed for the next version, Tuore has posted how to fix it in the bug-reports thread I think.

    Good! I'm glad you are enjoying it! We aren't finished yet, we have several more ideas to introduce into the mod before Divine Wind is released, such as an improved HRE system, a more realistic vassal system, and I'd also like to improve the Papacy a bit.

    but now i am getting some missions against the mongol nations so i will be buzzy for a while

    and when do the crusades come actually ?

    its going verry good
    i like the fact of not expanding to fast first to times i had to quit after 10 years because i couldn't handle the rebbellions but now i managed to control them

    Modeling the Magyars

    This has perplexed me for a while. How to model the Magyars, who were a real threat to the survival of East Francia and her vassal states for much of the tenth century. Something like a third of the Bavarian population died in the war that led up to Louis the Child's death in 911. I see that DW will have some new dynamics for hordes, but in the meantime, what would be the best way to represent East Francia's frontier problems?
